Contact with water is the #1 antagonist of healthy skin
Action: Prolonged
washing destroys the
protective function of the
stratum corneum – natural
skin oils are dissolved and washed off.
Result: irritant contact
dermatitis can develop. 1) natural skin oils
2) skin surface 3) water
Affects of Washing
Normal, healthy skin
Cracked skin
Affects of Washing
 Cracked and scaly skin
provides microorganisms
ideal niches
 Antiseptics cannot reach
hidden non-socomial
pathogens
 Hand disinfection is in
danger of not being
effective enough
VAST MAJORITY of situations
in clinical practice calls for
hand disinfection - not hand
washing!
