    How the World Works

    Over the coming weeks students will be looking into how our worldworks. This unit is an inquiry into how humans use their understanding

    of scientific principles. During this unit, students will inquire into

    materials and their properties using the scientific method of predict,

    observe, explain.

    Central Idea Materials are used and changed for dierent purposes according to their

    properes.

    Mathematics are integrated with our unit which, will be

    taught in conjunction with our on going mathematics

    and literacy programs.

    Language Arts

    The students will also work closely with Ms. Jennifer our Elementary librarian

    to enhance research skills. In ICT with Mr. Jago students will develop a deep-

    er understanding of how ICT is used to investigate and communicate.

    Mathematics

    Transdisciplinary Speaking and Listening: Oral quesoning and listening. Increasing vocabulary

    to describe materials and their properes.

    Reading: Non-con reading strategies e.g. skimming, scanning.

    Features of non-con texts such as; contents, index, heading, glossary, dia-

    grams, labels, photographs, capons, comparisons.

    Wring :The purpose of the non-con genre wring. How to plan, write,

    revise, edit and publish non-con wring for an audience.

    Transdisciplinary Measurement:

    Conceptual UnderstandingStandard units allow us to have a common

    language to idenfy, compare, order and sequence objects by length.

    Construcng MeaningUnderstand the standard units to measure length

    Transferring MeaningEsmate and measure objects using standard

    units of measurement for length.

    Applying UnderstandingUse standard units of measurement to solve

    problems in real-life situaons involving length.
