Shorter length of stay among tourists in Tallinn

The average length of stay for tourists was 1.70 nights (-6%).

Among primary markets, Norwegian tourists stay the longest (2.50 nights), and Finish tourists spent the shortest time (1.37 nights).

70% of accommodated tourists arrived for holidays

71% of foreign tourists stay in Tallinn for leisure purposes, 21% for business, 6% for attending a conference and 2% for other purposes.

62% of domestic tourists visit for leisure purposes, 30% for business, 5% for attending conferences and 3% for other purposes.

Room occupancy rates and average price of bednights** decreased

In September 417 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 44%, 9 percentage points lower than in September of the previous year.

The average cost of a bednight in an accommodation establishment was 565 kroons, which is 14% (90 kroons) less expensive compared to september 2008.

Travellers by air and by sea decreased

The number of passengers at Tallinn Airport was 118,680, down 28% compared with September the year before. The number of passengers passing through the Tallinn Old Harbour totaled 532,200, down by 1% compared with September last year.

Tourists staying in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments

During the period from January to September 2009, a total of 861,800 tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (7% less tourists compared with same period in 2008). Altogether a total of 762,400 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments (-5% or 38,000 tourists). The number of domestic tourists decreased somewhat, numbers accommodated fell 21%, by 26,300 tourists, for a total of 99,400. Bednights spent by tourists also shrank during the first nine months, with a total of 1,482,100 bednights (-10%) spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments. While bednights by foreign tourists shrank by 8% (totalling 1,322,800 bednights), bednights by Estonian residents were down by 27% (total 159,800 bednights).

In the in the first nine months of 2009 the average length of stay continued to decline and it was 1.72 nights (-4%). The longest stays in Tallinn were in January and July, and the shortest were in February and March. Compared to the previous year, the average length of stay decreased the most in February.

During the first nine months the average trip length among foreign tourists shortened by 3%, from 1.79 to 1.72 nights. The length of stay for domestic tourists decreased even more, from 1.75 to 1.61 nights, or 8 percentages points.
