Taft College TIL Program students volunteered on Monday to help out at the Taft Community Gardens located on 9th Street across from Cooper’s True Value Hardware. The students, enrolled in the Taft College Transition To Independent Living Program worked on garden clean-up and filled garden boxes with soil that had been donated by Tumbleweed Cafe owner Orchel Krier, delivered by volunteer Bob Aguirre in a truck donated by General Production Service earlier in the week. On Saturday, February 27 the Midway Sunset Lion’s Club will volunteer to put up fencing along 9th Street. On Saturday, March 6th garden volunteers and Melissa Iger of the Kern Tree Foundation will plant trees, fill raised garden beds with the donated soil and plant plants along the fence. Westside residents are encouraged to help out. Bring shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them. The Soroptimist Club of Taft will also be there for their annual Work Day.

The garden is also supported by the West Kern Water District, the City of Taft, Fred Holmes, Kent Suthard, Cooper’s True Value Hardware, King’s Nursery, Synagro, Taft College, the Taft High School ROP Program, and Taft Rotary. The group is led by board members Kathy Johnson and Milea Suthard. The raised garden bed boxes are available to rent for $40 for a 6 month period. Taft Community Gardens is a non-profit organization run by local volunteers. For more information on the garden, please call Kathy Johnson at 770-7202.

Taft Midway Sunset Lions Holds Student Speaker Contest The Taft Midway Sunset Lions held their “Club Level” Student Speaker Contest on February 9, 2010 in the Taft High IRC Building. This year’s topic is “Universal Healthcare-How Will It Affect Us”. The speakers were Taft High students, Jose Avina, and Brianna Rowden, with Brianna being the winning speaker. Both speakers won a cash prize for their efforts. Brianna will now move to the next level, which is the “Zone Level.” That contest will be held on March 6, 2010 in the Taft High IRC Building at 5 p.m. She will compete with students sponsored by the Arvin and Lamont Lions. The public is welcome, to watch at no admission. The prizes were given by the Taft Midway Sunset Lions, which we were able to do as a result of our Christmas tree sales. Although overdue, we would like to thank the following for making our tree lot a success, Clint Wagner, the City of Taft, Kern County Fire Department, The Independent, fellow Lions, and the great community of Taft and surrounding areas. In the future, we will be doing more local projects and giving a scholarship at Taft High School. We thank the community for your support.

Grand Jury Report Dominates City Council Meeting, Miller Calls for Council Censure of Thompson

City Manager Gorson Blast Councilman Thompson as “Rogue Councilman”, Says Stress at City Harming Employes Taft City Manager Bob Gorson held a wide ranging 30 minute news conference on Thursday where he defended his tenure as City Manager, and called Councilman Cliff Thompson a “Rogue Councilman” whose harassment of city employees has caused enough stress that city employees required medical treatment. Gorson said that Thompson had approached him about employment with the City of Taft but said that as long as he was city manager, Thompson would never be an employee of the city. Gorson also rejected Thompson’s claim at Tuesday’s City Council meeting that he had offered Thompson a public safety job with the city. A video of Gorson’s press conference can be seen at the Taft Independent Facebook page.

A recently released Kern County Grand Jury Report that criticized City Manager Bob Gorson, and the Taft City Council dominated the Taft City Council meeting on Tuesday evening. Councilman Cliff Thompson, who was cited by the Grand Jury for having “violated public trust”, gave a Power Point slide presentation to the council critical of Gorson, Councilman Randy Miller and the Independent for its new coverage of the City Council. Later, Councilman Paul Linder read a prepared statement critical of Thompson apologizing to the public for the embarrassing media coverage of the Grand Jury investigation. “When personal agenda’s, dishonesty and release of privileged information occurs in an attempt to move the attention away from poor decisions or dishonesty, it becomes a sad time in our history,” Linder said. Linder also read a statement from Councilman Randy Miller who was absent from the meeting and called on the council to censure Thompson. “I ask this council to consider Council censure of Mr. Thompson, as he has not lived up to his responsibilities as a Taft City Councilman,” Miller wrote. Mayor Dave Noerr also made a statement about the Grand Jury findings, rejecting the reports finding that the council had failed in it fiduciary responsibilities. All councilmen’s comments on video can be seen on the Taft Independent’s Facebook page.

Power Pointless Presentation or I’m Right and Your Wrong

Oh the irony. It’s Grand Jury Awareness Week - I am not kidding - and just when the City of Taft is reeling from a report issued by the Kern County Grand Jury which chastised just about everyone at city hall - except the City Attorney according to the Not The Daily Midway Driller - City Hall just didn’t need this kind of celebration to brighten up all those long faces on the City Council. By the way, what does one do to celebrate Grand Jury Awareness Week? I’m just asking.

I tell you one thing, Taft just didn’t need any awareness about the Grand Jury this week, not after Spiffy Cliffy’s Grand performance, as pathetic as it was, at the City Council Tuesday evening. Yep, the old Cliffman was in rare form in his go-to-Sunday meeting suit when he took the stage in front of the city council during council comment time and began his bizarre power point explanation of why he and the Grand Jury was right about City Manager Gorson and the devious ways of the city council majority, and why they were wrong. “This is the truth, it’s in black and white and I have the documentation to back everything.” said the Spifman. Well, you just had to be there to appreciate the manic, somewhat paranoid presentation as Cliffy went on about how City Manager Bob Gorson was a bad man, that the Taft Independent was a lying rag so-called newspaper, that everyone on the council had released privileged council documents, and, well you get the idea. Cliffy even brought up his old glory days in 2000 during the Belli-Railroad fraud and

Taft Union High School is hosting a second free financial aid workshop where officials will help parents sign up on-line for college aid. The workshop for high school seniors and their parents will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, February 20th in rooms 160 and 161 upstairs in the main building. A previous workshop was held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, but school officials are offering a Saturday workshop for those who could not attend the earlier Wednesday night workshop. Parents will be assisted in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form used by virtually all two- and four-year colleges, universities and career school for awarding government aid. Bilingual assistance will be available. The event “opens the door for federal money and Cal grants and for alumni funds at the college they plan to attend,” explained high school counselor Mike McCormick. The event will be open for four hours but it only takes about 20 minutes to fill out the forms, McCormick said. He said parents should get on-line beforehand at “www.pin.ed.gov” to obtain a pin number they can bring with them on Wednesday. Parents may also get more information at “www.fafsa.ed.gov”.Parents should bring their 2008 or 2009 income tax information, and social security numbers for themselves and their child. If not a U.S. citizen, they should bring their alien registration cards. If the student and parent are undocumented, school officials will talk with them about AB540 support. If you have questions, call McCormick at 763-2326.

how the Grand Jury sided with him then and how he was right then, and he is right now. Well, if you didn’t know any better, you would of thought, “hey, this guy knows what he’s talking about. That old city government is rotten to the core and those people are just trying to make Cliffy look bad.” Well, it didn’t quite work out that way. Councilmanic Paul Linder, Taft’s squeaky clean, All-American - Maricopa raised - do gooder pubic servant read a prepared statement refuting Cliff ’s rant, and then sanity began to return to the room. “...because of a lack of integrity and honesty by some..(go Pauly go)...we can not operate as a full council.” “The only person that has released privileged documents that I am aware of, is Mr. Thompson - we have the pot calling the kettle black.” Then Linder read a prepared statement by Councilman Randy Miller, who was missing in action because he was sick at home. Randy’s statement, in great detail, gave an overview of the whole Grand Jury ordeal, acquitting himself and the council quite well. Randy was responding to the Grand Jury’s accusations that the council was uneducated, suspect in its motivations, failed in its fiduciary responsibilities, and just didn’t know what they were doing, as well as saying what the council should have have done long ago - censure the Cliffmeister. So, the best part was when Randy asked the council to consider censuring Cliffy - a really bad note from the council that Cliffy would have to take home - for leaving the council dais during a meeting and threatening members of the media (the Taft Independent publisher), conning the city manager and his wife into a $200,000 loan, evaluating the city manager when he had a conflict of interest, not going to meetings that were paid for by taxpayer dollars when he was suppose to, leaving closed session meetings in a huff when he needed to be there, and best of all, releasing privileged documents to the Bakersfield Californian to undermine the council. Censure? This could be

Taft High School Hosting Free College Financial Aid Workshop

Thompson: I’m right and your wrong.

really interesting - I bet a million dollars that the censure resolution is on the agenda at the next meeting, but that Cliff won’t be there to face up to his peers. Well, all these Grand Jury accusations and Cliffy’s rant didn’t sit well with Mayor Dave Noerr who spoke after Pauly, and gave perhaps one of the best summations of the whole entire mess. Dave’s comments were spot on and if you get a chance to go on the Taft Independent’s

Facebook page, you can see in its entirety Cliffy’s rant, Pauly’s speech and Mayor Dave’s neat summation of all that is wrong with Cliffy’s logic and how the Grand Jury just got most of it wrong. If the get a chance to view it, maybe the Grand Jury could learn something about Taft politics. Take it from the WSW. The Olympics are boring, so go watch the videos, see democracy in action by going to the Taft Independent’s Facebook page.

Council Bluffs

Taft City Councilman Cliff Thompson gestures to the audience at Tuesday’s City Council meeting as he makes a Power Point presentation on the findings of the Kern County Grand Jury Report that was critical of Thompson, City Manager Bob Gorson, the city council and the Taft Independent’s news coverage of Thompson. Thompson made the 20 minutes presentation to the council, followed by prepared remarks by Councilman Paul Linder who also read a statement submitted by Councilman Randy Miller which called on the council to censure Thompson. Miller was absent from the meeting due to an illness. Mayor Dave Noerr made an impassioned speech to the council and audience of 25 people defending the council, and critical of remarks made about the council in the Grand Jury report. Following the regular council meeting, the council went into closed session to discuss a building owned by Councilman Craig Noble, known as the Midway Sunset Trading Post located on city owned land. Noble had sold the building to a local realtor, but the realtor stopped making payments on the building when she was unable to purchase the land from the city. As a city councilman, Noble is prevented by law from having a contract with the city which would have allowed him to keep the building on the city owned land. Noble sold the building which allowed him to retain his council seat. Now the matter is unclear since the realtor stopped making payments to Noble, and City Manager Bob Gorson claims that the city now owns the building.

Losing the building to the city would be a costly loss for Noble who had purchased and made significant improvements to the historic structure. Noble has been silent on the issue and not made any comments or claims as to whether he still claims ownership of the building. After Mayor Noerr adjourned the closed session meeting, he announced that the council had “given direction” on the issue of the property. See the Video of Thomspon’s Presentation, Linder’s remarks and Mayor Noerr’s remarks on the Taft Independent’s Facebook page.

Taft College Gets New Director of DevelopmentMeet Taft College Foundation and Development Director Sheri Horn Bunk

by Jessica G. Miller

Taft College has found a “Rainmaker” in their Director of Foundation and Development, Sheri Horn Bunk and her ability to bring in a great deal of wealth to the campus. The veteran fundraiser has taken on the responsibility of raising money for the college with a modern and enthusiastic approach. From her involvement with the Bernard Osher Scholarship Endowment to her foray into the world of social networking, Bunk has made a remarkable impact on Taft College in an important position she started in only five months ago. With coordinating events to entice potential donors and the fundraising for projects like the forthcoming, updated facility for the TIL program, Bunk’s job carries a substantial amount of importance. “I raise money for the institution,” Bunk explained. “I work on behalf of the students here, making sure that we raise money to support the ongoing programs as well as implement new ones. We bring about support and grow scholarship endowments here because, as we all know, it’s getting more difficult to pay for an education.” Bunk is also striving to reach out to the alumni. “We’ve got a lot of alumni from 80 years or so floating around but we don’t have a lot of data on those people,” she said. “And we would like to hear from them if they’re out there and keep them abreast to what the institution is doing.” Bunk brings experience in a variety of fields and also natural talent to her position at Taft College. Starting her career in Los Angeles, she began to get a feel for the business world

by working in the entertainment industry. Eventually, she found herself in Bakersfield working for Buck Owens as a sales manager, then at KBAK as a national sales manager and as a general sales manager at Univision Television. After retiring from the entertainment industry, she started up a website with a partner for free classified ads called BakersfieldAds.com, creating an innovative forum for advertising and classified ads on the internet at the time. After selling the website, her money raising ability was recruited by the president of the Bakersfield Symphony and later she moved onto CSUB, remaining there for some time until she came into contact with Taft College President, Willie Duncan, who informed her of an open position at Taft College. “I thought to myself, what a terrific opportunity to help the city of Taft,” Bunk said. “When I showed up I thought, I’m not driving to Taft everyday. When I left and I put my hand on my car door I realized, I’m going to work at Taft. I just felt it was such a good match. I feel that it was a very, very good place for me to land.” Bunk has made finding potential donors and raising money for the Bernard Osher Scholarship Endowment her foremost mission. Osher, a philanthropist from Maine, created the endowment in 2008 for all of the community colleges in California with a stipulation that each college match the amount of money assigned to the individual college based on enrollment. For Taft College and Bunk, this means raising almost $110,000. “There are a lot of people that are interested and I’m really optimistic that I’m going to get that money, I don’t doubt it at all. I think that this is one of those terrific opportunities,” she said. “And this particular gift that he’s decided to give to the community colleges in California is truly unique.” Osher designed the scholarships for second year students who are going for an AA degree and qualify for the California Community College Board of Governors fee waiver, among a few other requirements. Members of the community can get involved with the endowment by donating a $13,500 scholarship in their name, business or of another honoree. “Whoever gives to this particular scholarship can sit on the committee to help select the student, they can be involved with the student, and they certainly can come to the annual spring scholarship lunch,” Bunk said. “The level of commitment is up to the person who donates.” One way that Bunk is able to get the word out about this scholarship fund and other events on campus is the use of the social networking outlet, Facebook. “I think social networking is the way to go” she said. “It has given me such an opportunity. I literally connect with people and I have actually raised money through Facebook, I can’t believe it.” Bunk started the Taft College Alumni and Friends fan page and is aiming to reach out to the younger generation. “It’s important to connect with the young people on campus,” she said. “The foundation needs to work on communicating with them and keeping them involved, and keeping them in touch with what’s going on.” She hopes to move forward with Facebook but also working with the enrollment department on possibly sending text messages to students to keep them informed of the latest news on campus.

With the use of Facebook and other means of marketing, Bunk has helped expose Taft College to a wider variety of people. “We’ve had several events over the last few weeks that have brought a lot of people into our world that typically aren’t in our world.” With this exposure, Bunk is able to find more ways to raise money for projects like the state of the art facility for the TIL program that will be breaking ground in the fall. “This is a huge building and a huge endeavor,” she explained. “This new facility is going to allow other people to come here and study our program and take it back to their institutions, where ever they may be.” Although some state money will be used to help build the facility, she still needs to raise more funds and hopes to do so through opportunities like in naming the building and rooms. The ground breaking for the TIL building is just one of many new prospects on Taft College’s horizon. With the college coming into a new era, new traditions are being started like with the very first Taft College Athletic Barbeque this fall. “It’s the night before Oildorado kicks off and the night before the unveiling of the monument so we’re working with the Oildorado committee to be involved with us that night,” Bunk said. “We want to entice all the people that we have here to continue with the activities for the rest of the week.” However, Bunk’s main objective for the event is to showcase the college and all of its attributes. “I want the community to come,” she said. “We’ll be giving tours through our new 40 foot mobile STEM unit. We’re going to have some interesting entertainment and great food.” If Sheri Horn Bunk has accomplished this much for Taft College in only five months then it will be interesting to see what else she can bring about in the next five months.

How to look good for Spring or How to Spring back into your bikini Are you suffering from Spring break syndrome not knowing how to fit into your bikini? Don’t worry, you’re not alone we are all in the same boat!!! So let’s steer this boat into the right direction by following

a few tips that will help you fit into your bikini and a lot more..eating a balanced diet is the most important rule...no, you do not need a scale to balance your diet. A balanced diet means eating the right amounts of Protein, Carbohydrates, and the good Fats. 30 to 35% of your diet should come from Protein. Meats, Fish, soy, nuts, and vegetables such as spinach these all contain good amounts of protein. The other 35% should be Carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits, and whole grains). The remainding should be the good fats. Good fats are omega 3’s and 6, polyunsaturated and monosaturated...you can find these in nuts, olive oil, flax seeds, sesame seeds, and also Fish. If you’re worried about Mercury poisoning from fish, don’t! researchers have found that drinking green or black tea when eating fish reduces Mercury absorption by 94%. So have some tea with your fish! For liquids I strongly recommend lukewarm water with a few drops of lemon or llime juice. It gets your bowels moving and thins out your blood meaning it helps burn fat. after you balance you diet don’t forget to do some exercising. This will help you tone up and lose those extra pounds faster. Hope this helps everybody, see you next time!

Aries (March 21-April 19): A loved one may ask you for a favor or loan this week. Keep an open mind and really hear them out before making a decision.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): You can either keep pretending that everything’s fine or you can admit that this isn’t an ideal situation and demand that you deserve better. It’s your call.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): I know you hate to admit weakness of any kind, but if you’re truly sick then it would behoove you to take a day or two off. You’ll never get better otherwise.

Cancer ( June 21-July 22): You’re not okay with this situation, so stop acting like you are. It’s doing no one any good, and your true feelings are obvious to boot.

Leo ( July 23-August 22): It’s one thing to have innocent curiosity, but it’s another to actively stick your nose where it most definitely does not belong. Make sure you respect others’ privacy.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): It’s okay to have an opinion, and it’s also okay to make that opinion known, but after that you need to entitle others to their own opinions.

Libra (September 23-October 22): You’re beginning a very important journey this week, and in preparation you’ll need to start saving money everywhere that you can.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22): Sometimes being a good leader means letting someone else take the reins here and there. You can’t control everything.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): While a loved one may not tell you what you want to hear this week, you have to take some solace in that they’re being completely honest with you.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): Don’t ask someone what they think if you’re just going to ignore or shoot down their theories and opinions. It’s a waste of your and their time.

Aquarius ( January 20-February 19): You’ve said your piece, now you have to sit back and let it sink in. You definitely caught someone off guard and they need a minute to catch up to you.

Pisces (February 20-March 20: You can’t hope for your health to get any better if you refuse to take time to take care of yourself. Running yourself into the ground does you absolutely no good.

If your birthday is this week: What good is it to keep your current position if you have to sacrifice your integrity to do so? While it might be a harder decision and a scarier more unknown path to take, sometimes starting fresh can be the best thing. And in your case, I think it’s a necessary thing, unless you enjoy going against everything you believe in.
