HeartCry Missionary Society

Statement of PurposeThe chief end of all mission work is the Glory of

God. Our greatest concern is that His Name be greatamong the nations, from the rising to the setting of thesun (Malachi 1:11). We find our constant motivation, not in man or his needs, but in God, His commitment toHis own glory and our God-given desire to see Himglorified in every nation, tribe, people and language. The HeartCry Missionary Society is dedicated to thetask of fulfilling the Great Commission through spon-soring national pastors and missionaries in the foreignfield.

Principles of Ministry* Every need of this ministry will be obtained through

prayer. We may share our missionary vision withothers and even make known to them the specifictasks which the Lord has laid on our heart to do, butwe may not raise support through prodding or ma-nipulating our brothers and sisters in Christ. If thisministry is of the Lord then He will be our patron. IfHe is with us, He will direct His people to give andwe will prosper. If He is not with us, we will not andshould not succeed.

* We intend to never enlarge our field of labor by con-tracting debts. This is contrary to both the letter andthe spirit of the New Testament. In secret prayer,God helping us, we will carry the needs of this min-istry to the Lord and act according to the directionthat He gives.

* We will not compete with other biblical mission agen-cies, but use the resources that God has given to us towork in partnership with them. If the Lord directs,we will sacrifice our own goals and resources thatother mission works may be helped and the King-dom of God increased.

* In meeting any need, those of us who are supportedfinancially by this ministry will be the first to sacri-fice all things necessary for the will of God and theadvancement of His Kingdom.

* We will not measure the success of this ministry bythe amount of money given, Bibles distributed or na-tional missionaries supported, but by the Lord’s bless-ing on the work.

HEARTCRY MISSIONARY SOCIETY

From the Director

Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christwho has abolished death and brought life and immortality tolight through the Gospel. I trust that this new issue of HeartCryfinds you growing in the Lord and in His grace.

This last month and a half has been nothing less than awhirlwind. On the fifteenth of January we left for Peru. A dayafter arriving in Lima we were joined by Greg Stacy and LloydBarkley of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. The purpose of their visit was to investigate the possiblity ofconstructing buildings suitable for worship and preaching. The next day we left for the city of Sullana on the northerncoast of Peru near Equador. In the four days we spent inSullana, we visited several works that are hindered in theirevangelism, because they have no suitable meeting place forpublic worship and the ministry of the Word. We were able topin point several key places where construction projects willbegin this summer.

From the northern coast we set out for the interior tocheck on the works in the high jungle on the eastern slopesof the Andes. The great move of God in the north that has leftnearly 550 churches in its wake has made its way over theAndes mountains and down into the basin. The spread ofthe Gospel from the mountains to the jungle was largelycaused by a divinely ordained drought in the highlands thathas caused the Christians to migrate into the lower, wetterregions near the basin. To our surprise and great delight, themountain pastors that have migrated to the high jungle are

now making contact with the unevangelized Aguaruna tribesand making great efforts to plant churches among them.

When we reached our final destination in the interior, wepreached in churches overrun with people who had come tohear the Gospel of Christ. Those that could not enter, gath-ered around the windows and entances straining to hear theWord. It brought back memories of my first years in Peru, thetravels across the mountains on foot and horse back, and theindescribable joy of expounding the Gospel to those whostrained to hear.

From the basin, we traveled once again to the city ofLima where two weeks of conferences awaited me. Study andcounseling during the day and preaching two hours at nightmade the two weeks fly. The first conference covered themajor doctrines of the Gospel of our Salvation, the life, deathand resurrection of Christ, regeneration, repentance and faith, justification, adoption, the indwelling of the Spirit and finallysanctification and glorification. Many pastors were in atten-dance and they seemed to have grown in their knowledge ofthe content of the Gospel and its preaching. The night that Ipreached on the baptism and filling of the Holy Spirit was themost attended. In Peru there seems to be two dangerousextremes. One extreme, emphasizes the work of the Spirit, butwith little doctrinal basis and much error. The other extremeseems to ignore the person and work of the Holy Spirit, andin some cases even deny His work.

The second conference covered marriage and the family.Although the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, theconversion it produces in the hearts of men does not anullthe need for further instruction. Many of the Christians wholive in Peru, still experience the consequences of being igno-rant with regard to God’s will for marriage. It is necessary tospend a great amount of time in teaching, exhortation, rebukeand encouragment so that Christ’s people will be illustra-tions of His love for the Church through their marriages.

Our second to last night in Peru was spent at the gradu-ation celebration of Compassion International. This is a won-derful ministry through which individuals in the United Statessponsor children in impoverished countries so that they mightreceive clothing, food, an education and the Gospel. Therewere nearly 400 young graduates of the program in attentancealong with over 100 pastors from different denominations. Itwas a great privilege to speak to such a group. My sermonwas on the theology of the Gospel, with great emphasis placedupon the wrath of God and the great necessity for such wrathto be appeased through the death of Christ as a propitiationfor our sin.

We returned from Peru on the 16th of February and onthe 19th we traveled to Detroit, Michigan to open a confer-

ence on Missions and then teach the remainder of the weekon the Gospel and its benefits. It is from Detroit that I am nowwriting this issue of HeartCry. Next week, I will be teaching amarriage conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and from there,I will be off on a three week preaching tour of British Colum-bia. Please keep us in your prayers. It is our greatest desire tosee God’s glory revealed through the conversion of the lostand the edification of God’s people.

Before I bring this short letter to a close, I would like tosay something that might encourage you and cause you tobe more given to the things of God. If you call upon the Nameof Christ and are assured that you have inherited eternal lifeby that Name, then I encougage you to give yourselves whollyand completely to the things of God. There is little time tolose and nothing but glory to gain. Let us set our sights onthings above and not be given to the temporal that has ben-efits for only a season. While it is day let us walk and work inits light; the night is coming when no man will be able towork. You and I have been separated from this world andbrought near to God. We are to live for His glory and giveourselves in love to the advancement of His Kingdom. Donot waste the precious gifts and talents that have been en-trusted to you, but stir yourself up in the things of God, bewilling to obey and zealous to do good works for His glory. Ihave no idea what your pursuits in life may be, but I can tellyou that they are not worthy of your calling if they are noteternal. All wood, hay and stubble will burn like dry chaffgiven to the flame, only the things done in the Name of Christand for the glory of God will last. Do not be like the one whotrains and runs for a perishable crown, but be like the onewho seeks after a crown that is imperishable. These bodies ofours, our homes, cars and possessions will all pass away, butonly the one who does the will of God will abide forever. Donot look back to the past and be discouraged for time lost.Repent and press forward to the high calling of God in Christ.

“Therefore if you have been raised up withChrist, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right handof God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. Foryou have died and your life is hidden withChrist in God. When Christ, who is ourlife, is revealed, then you also will be re-vealed with Him in glory.”

Colossians 3:1 (NAB)

Traveling through the rural unevangelized areas ofSullana, Peru, I came across this fish vendor who carried asmall advertisement on the back of his motorcycle. In En-glish the words read: JESUS IS COMING - BE PREPARED.

As I talked with the man, I discovered to my surprisethat He was not a believer and did not have much interest inbecoming one. I immediately asked him why he would putsuch a sign on the back of his motorcycle since he was not abeliever. His reply was simple and matter of fact: “Jesus isgoing to come back whether I am ready or not. Thereforepeople should be prepared.” His statement caused me tothink upon the sovereignty of God for two reasons: (1) Thereturn of Jesus depends upon God’s eternal decree and notupon anything that man might will or do. (2) God can evenuse the lost to carry His message to peoples who have notyet heard.

It seems that I have been a victim of persecution sincethe very first day I visited the church. My mother gave herlife to Christ in 1963, a year after the death of my father. Thatsame year, I finished my required recitation of the Holy Ko-ran. In 1965, I entered a church for the first time on the invita-tion of my mother’s pastor. Immediately, news spread amongmy Muslem friends that I had become a Christian. The prob-lem became so dangerous for me that my family sent me to thecity of Ibadan about 600 miles away. While I was there Ibegan to attend a church, because the people with whom Iwas living were Christians. I was still a practicing Muslem atthe time, but had begun to drift away from the Moslem teach-ings. Finally, in 1970, the anger of those who had sought tokill me ceased and I returned to my home.

In November of 1978, while watching a film titled, “TheDeath and Resurrection of Jesus Christ,” I gave my life toJesus Christ. I immediately threw away all the charms that Ihad used in witchcraft and began to serve the Lord. In a shorttime, I began to give my testimony in open air crusades andwas full of joy because the Lord used the crusades to leadmany people to Christ. By 1981, I knew that God was callingme to the ministry as a preacher of the Gospel.

When I finished my secular studies, I went to my unclewho worked in the oil business and immediately he gave me ajob as a Manager. Although the work provided many ben-efits, it gave me no peace of mind and so after three months Iquit. My uncle was very angry with me for leaving my job,but offered me a job managing one of his gas stations. Hepayed me well and I had my own car, but he was still angrywith me because I used this vehicle to travel and do evange-lism in my free time.

In 1984, my pastor told me about a Muslem dominatedarea about 98 miles from where I lived that was without aChristian witness. Led of the Lord, I bought a motorcycleand began to visit there every weekend with one of the youth

leaders of my church. Eventually, we were able to plant achurch there and train a pastor as its leader.

All these things that I was doing in the Name of the Lordcaused me many great problems with my uncle who thoughtI had become too involved in “religion.” I enjoyed minister-ing very much, but deep down inside I knew Iwas runningfrom the call that God had given me to become a preacher. Idid not like the idea of being a pastor because I saw the life ofsacrifice they lived and how much they suffered. I knew thatif I became a pastor I would be surrounded by poverty andsuffering. The people of my town always say that one canrecognize the pastors in the community because most ofthem are so poor that they must wear only rubber flip-flopsbecause they have no money to buy real shoes. Finally, oneday my heart was too heavy and I knew I had to obey Godand do what he wanted me to do. I knew I would face muchpersecution from my family, but I did not care. When I finallymade this decision, my uncle confiscated my savings ac-count, my car and my motorcycle.

Soon afterwards in 1986, the time came for me to enterSeminary. I did not have the money I needed for the depositbut by God’s mercy someone paid it for me. One of the mostencouraging things I have seen as I work for the Lord is thatHe cares for His own. For example, one night when my part-ner and I were in the jungle of Ajaokuta, we were met by a bigpython that was laying across the road. It was very dark inthe forest and there was no way to return or to go forward. We sat there on our motorcycle praying until the large snakemoved completely out of the road and we sped past it. Godhas been very gracious because many have been killed inthis same forest by wild animals.

In 1986, I was married to my lovely wife Esther and weattended seminary together by faith. My uncle who couldhave sponsored me without any problems, thought I wasinsane and turned his back on me. Just recently I was able to

Samuel Ahmed& Family -Nigeria

see him again and he told me that I had been bewitched bythe Christian religion. He kept saying that he could not un-derstand why I would want to spend my life suffering and inneed when I could have so many material things with hishelp. Every time we have our family gatherings he makes funof me and calls me the “suffering man” of the family. In spiteof this, God enables me to keep going and work for Him.

After seminary, I traveled with my wife Esther and threechildren to Minna to begin a church in Chanchaga. When wearrived there, the pastor told us that there was no money tobegin a new work. Nevertheless, my wife and I began to goout soulwinning and praying to God to provide the funds tobegin His work. We began to make some converts, but hadno place to worship. My wife and our five children lived in asmall two room house that had a bathroom and nothing else.We faced many trials at that time in our lives and many timeswe were barely able to feed our family. I thank God for my wifewho never complained throughout all the difficulties, butwas alway there to help me. When she was not witnessingwith me or discipling women, she found time to weave clothesand sell them, so that we could feed our family. We never hada good meal, but there was always enough to keep us alive.Because of this time of difficulty and need, I began to thinkthat maybe God had not called me to do His work. I prayedand fasted because these thoughts tortured me and I wanted

to find peace knowing that I was doing what God wanted meto do. It was at this same time that Rev. Owolabi called me tosay that HeartCry was interested in supporting my work. Ipraised God for His answers to prayer and His encourage-ment. And I also thank you brothers and sisters for your lovefor souls and your participation in God’s work by supportingme and my family.

Being a Christian or a minister here in Africa is not aneasy task. The humiliations and persecutions that we mustbear during soul winning are numerous. Recently, I went tosomeone’s house to witness and after knocking on his doorthe man came out screaming at me and driving me away as ifI were a crazy person. I left the place and moved down furtherto another house where I was insulted and driven away also. This other person told me to leave the area before I got hurt.I quit going there for a while, but I have started to visit again. My wife and her team were also treated badly one day whilesharing a tract with some people. We also have many churchmembers that are persecuted and abandoned by their fami-lies physically and financially because they profess to beChristians.

In spite of this we thank God because our suffering hasborne fruit. A lady who is now a member of our church, re-cently gave her testimony and said that she became a Chris-tian because of my patience in visiting her many times. Sheadmitted that she insulted me intentionally and spoke badlyabout me, but to no avail. I was greatly encouraged by thistestimony to press on in the work of God. I thank God for allthe soulwinners in our Church that go out and bear withmuch persecution, because this has yielded much success inour soulwinning. Please pray that we will be filled withstrength and love so that we may share the Good News to thepeople that do not know Him. The attendance at the churchhas increased to 50 people, including children. For this wegive God the glory. The Lord never fails us in spite of diffi-culty and persecution. We face much opposition from Satanwho tries to stop us from distributing tracts to the Muslemcommunities. We need your fervent prayers as co-laborers inthis effort to take the Gospel to the unreached. We are verycareful because we do not want to spark another religiouswar in the northern zone. In addition to the opposition wereceive from some of the Muslems, we must also battle againstthe fact that many tribes are controlled by idolatry and super-stition. Many people that long for security and power partici-pate in the satanic rituals and use incantations in which theycut their bodies, drink blood and do much more unspeakablethings of the sort. Please pray as we battle that their eyesmay be open to the Truth and to God. We are always prayingfervently knowing that this battle can only be won by God’shand and that we cannot do anything aside from Him.

Finally, bothers and sisters, we want to thank you foryour generous contribution of $500 that has allowed us tobuy the piece of land where our church will one day be built. We do not have words to thank you enough for this greatdemonstration of love and concern for us. Praise God foryou! Thank you also for my personal support. I use part of itto rent the building where we are to have services.

The Ahmed Family

Satan tries to hinder our work for he knows his days arecounted. There is much opposition to the Gospel that comesfrom persecution, witchcraft, economic hardship andstarvation. The Muslems have taken many tribes captive inthe northern region of Nigeria. Most of these Muslems arevery fanatical, intolerant and aggressive. When we gowitnessing we find the word “Barshiga” written on the thedoors of at least 80% of the houses. The word means, “NoEntry.” One can be killed instantly if he fails to heed thewarning and enters the house to witness. Not long ago, brother Jefe, (who often witnesses with me), and I went soulwinning. On the way, we met a 60 year old man who was oneof the fanatics. The moment brother Jefe gave him a tract, theman got up and hit him and knocked him unconscious. It wasby God’s grace that we were not slaughtered. We hurriedbrother Jefe out of the village before the other Moslems camewith their bows, arrows and spears. They are frighteningbecause they are full of hate and rejection against the Gospel.witchcraft is also a great weapon of Satan against Christianityin the areas where I work. The terrible demonic powers areclaiming souls every day. The fear of witchcraft is so greatthat many have deserted their villages and left their landsdesolate in order to escape from its power. Because of theseterrible trials, we always separate three days out of each monthto fast and pray before God, asking for the deliverance oflost souls and the protection of the preachers.

In spite of our trials, the church is growing and souls arecoming to know the Lord. In these past months we have

seen over thirty people come to know Christ and now have agood group of believers preparing for their baptism. The mostremarkable conversion has been that of a “Juju” man or witchdoctor from the village of Fugar. This man’s source of incomewas making incantations and charms, and performing satanicrituals for people. I was invited to meet him one day when hecame to Minna. Before I went to speak with him, I fasted andprayed the entire day. When I began to speak with him thepower of God was with me. Because of this, the man brokedown crying and with tears he repented and gave his life toChrist. Two months later he died, but I rejoice because nowHe is in the presence of the Father. I was invited to preach athis funeral and twelve more people repented and gave theirlives to Christ. I praise God for the great working of His Spiritamong us.

Just recently we had a soul winning course that wasvery fruitful. Many of our people are responding to the call ofsoul winning after four months of intensive training. TheLord has burdened many hearts to tell others about the GoodNews of Christ. We have had as many as twenty five peopleshowing up to go soul winning with us. Our children’sministry is also blessed by God. They have already outgrowntheir room, therefore we are constructing another toaccommodate them.

We are joyful to report that our prayers have been heardand answered by our God in His time. We have beenministering in the prison and the work there is growing. Lastweek, fifteen Christian brothers were set free from prison

after many prayers. Brother Bulus is one of them. After hewas set free he came to me immediately to tell me the goodnews. There are still many in prison and we continue to prayfor them, waiting upon God’s perfect timing. We thank Godfor His work in these lives. We marvel as God touches thelives of many so that they dedicate themselves to prayer, fasting and sharing the Gospel. It is encouraging to see thatthe work of the ministry rests on all of us and not on one manalone.

Please pray for sister Hawa who gave her life to Christ inthe village of Gakolo during one of our soul winning ministries. She is facing serious trials. Her husband has sent her awaywith her two sons because of her new life in Christ. In spite ofthis she has remained faithful to God. Please remember her inyour prayers, so that she will find her strength in God. Mywife and I agreed to support her sons through school. Please

pray for us. Also please pray for our church. Just recently welost a committed Christian, a great soul winner, and a generousgiver - brother Augustine Obi. He left behind his wife and sixchildren. Before brother Obi gave his life to Christ he was analcohol dealer. From the moment he was converted, he leftbehind his old life, quit his business and became a follower ofGod. His life was a testimony to all. During his funeral servicein the town of Igbarim, twenty people gave their lives toChrist. We are praying to begin an outreach there.

Your prayers and financial support are a source of joyand encouragement for my family and me. We pray God’sblessing upon you all. We thank God for you and thepartnership in which He has placed us to take the Good Newsof Christ to the unreached areas of Nigeria. My wife and Ipray for you, that you will be made like Christ Jesus in everyway. We love you and appreciate your sacrificial giving andprayers.

New Believer’s Class inAndrew’s Church

Evangelism class withthe men and womenof Andrew’s church.

I was born to Presbyterian parents and baptized as aninfant. I was brought up in the Presbyterian Church ofSouthern Africa (PCSA) and went through Sunday schooland Catechism class. I was generally morally upright and wassure that I was a Christian. In 1986, after attending aPentecostal church service at my friend’s invitation, I beganto think seriously about my salvation. Though the preacherwho spoke was not very articulate, it was through his wordsthat I began to be troubled about the state of my soul. Fromthat moment on I felt a constant inner emptiness, and theinadequacy of my self-righteousness was always before me.I was under constant conviction of the Holy Spirit until oneday in 1987 when another friend invited me to a ScriptureUnion meeting at school. This time the preacher was veryarticulate and took great pains to show the difference betweenthe genuine Christian and the unregenerate unbeliever. As Ilistened to the preacher’s message, I realized that hisdescription of the unregenerated unbeliever fit me perfectly. For the first time in my life I saw myself as a terrible sinnerunder the wrath of God and felt the need to embrace therighteousness of Christ and to live a holy life to the glory ofGod. I prayed to God for forgiveness and felt His peace.

My conversion was such a dramatic and life-changingexperience that I wanted everyone to know, especially mypeers at church, family members and friends. With a few otheryoung people, I began a youth fellowship with a view tochanging or reviving the church. Within a few years, I becameaware of the great truths of the reformed faith and by 1990, Iembraced them fully. I also began to labor faithfully andzealously in the pastoral care of my local church. Finally in1997, I was appointed an elder. It was in this same year that Ilost my job and dedicated myself to full time ministry work inthe local church. As I labored in the Church, I began to seethat my denomination had moved away from the great historicaldoctrines of Christianity and had given much territory toliberalism and ecumenicalism. All this made it very difficult, ifnot impossible for me to carry out the ministry the Lord hadgiven me.

Through these trials, the Lord led me to consult withPastor Conrad Mbewe of Kabwata Baptist Church (KBC)where I am currently studying at the Reformed BaptistPreacher’s College. After sitting under his preaching andtutoring, I soon discovered that both my theology and viewsof ministry conformed to that of the Baptist denomination. Ihave since resigned from my former denomination and becomea member of the Kabwata Baptist Church. My vision is tobring as many sinners as possible to Christ by faithfullypreaching of the gospel and giving my person and energiesto the pastoral care of God’s flock. It is my great desire todisciple others so that they can grow in faith and be equippedfor the work of missions. This I daily seek to do by the graceof God.

Lichawa Thole -New Missionary in Zambia

Dino OrtizIn the country of Paraguay, HeartCry is supporting a

very special young man named Dino Ortiz. For the last fewyears, Dino has been working in the juvenile prison systemin the capital of Asunción. His ministry has resulted in theconversion of hundreds of adolescents who had alreadybeen given up as lost by society. Please pray for Dino byname. His greatest difficult is the lack of laborers in theharvest. His greatest needs are Bibles and sound Christianliterature. The following is a letter from Dino and a few ofthe testimonies from the boys that have been brought toChrist through his ministry.

I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior JesusChrist. I hope this letter finds you doing well and growing inthe knowledge of God that you may one day be like Christ. Here in prisons of Asunción, we have been receiving manyblessing and many trials. The blessings are that many youngmen are coming to Christ, and growing in their hunger forHim and His Word. Doors are being opened by the power ofGod and He is graciously touching lives even in this dark andsad place. Our greatest trial is the lack of workers willing tohelp us in this great harvest. We lack strong Christians whocan help us disciple, teach and encourage the new believers.

We have so much to do and so many that are willing to listenand learn, but we lack workers! Please pray for more laborers.

In spite of the trials and needs, I am doing well anddrawing my strength from God. There is so much to do in thejail ministry! So many people to see and talk to about theLord. Please pray that I will remain faithful to do what He hascalled me to do. God is doing so many things here in the jailswhere I minister. Sometimes I believe it is the best place towitness because the young men who live here can only sitand think about their lives and their need for a Savior. Theysee how low they have fallen and that there is no future forthem unless they turn to God. I bear witness that some eventurn to God on their own before I have the opportunity topreach to them. The young people outside of prison are al-most always too busy. There is so much to occupy theirminds, so many comforts that distract them from the realmeaning of life. Because of their worldly business and preoc-cupations, they are in a deeper, and more impenetrable prisonthan those who are behind bars.

In the following, are some of the testimonies of the youngmen that have come to know Christ and that now live for Himby the grace of God. As you read each testimony, please prayfor the young man to whom it belongs. They need the gracethat comes through prayer.

Conversions inthe Prisons ofParaguay

Mario UliambreMy name is Mario Uliambre and I am 19 years old. I am

in prison for robbery, drug trafficking, and murder. Before Imet Christ I lived on the streets. I was constantly stealing toprovide for my drug habit. Sometimes, I feel as though I havespent my whole life on drugs, in fights and in jail. I became aChristian eight months ago. I was saved the day I was invitedto attend one of the services in the prison church. As I satand listened to the message I remembered that I had heardthe same message years before through someone who hadwitnessed to me. I knew that what I was hearing was the truthand so I repented of my sin and believed in Christ as mySavior and Lord. Through His power, I have become a newcreature. Every Tuesday and Thursday I accompany brotherDino through the prison and bear witness about Christ to theones that do not know Him. I read my Bible regularly andpray that one day I can serve God with my life in the ministry.

Eladio RubenMy name is Eladio Ruben and I am 19 years old. Before

I came to prison I was a student and I played soccer for ateam in the city. But two years ago my life changed foreverwhen I murdered a man. I have been in juvenile jail for twoyears and will soon be transferred to the adult prison. I cameto know the Lord through the witness of brother Dino Ortizand the people that come to minister to the prisoners here in

Tacumbu. I have been a Christian for one year and continueto grow in the Lord. I constantly pray that God will allow meto leave prison, so that I can live a different life. I made aterrible mistake in my anger and now I am paying for it dearly.Nevertheless, I still thank God for allowing me to come toprison so that I might hear about Christ.

Juan ZelayaMy name is Juan Zelaya and I am 17 years old. Before I

came to prison, I worked helping my mother and sisters in themarket. As I grew older, I became involved with other boyswho were part of a gang. Eventually I stopped working withmy mother and began to drink, do drugs, steal and destroythings. Because of all this and because I did not listen to mymother’s correction, I ended up in jail for robbery. I havebeen a Christian for nine months and I thank God for chang-ing me and taking away the desire I had for drugs. Now Istudy my Bible and take computer classes here in the prison.I also tell other boys about Christ and how He changed mylife so that their lives can also be changed.

Ramon ToledoMy name is Ramon Toledo and I am 19 years old. My

road to prison began when I left my studies and began tohang around with gang members in my neighborhood. Intime, I rebelled against my parents and ran away from home. All of us who were members of the gang used drugs andcommitted robbery almost daily. One day a friend of minecommitted murder and during the trial I lied and tried to coverup for him. Because of my lying, I am now in prison as anaccomplice to his crime. I became a Christian when one of theworkers that come to the prison with Dino sat down with meand explained to me about Christ and what He had done togive me a new life. I had never heard the message which wasshared with me that day, but I realized it was true. Almostimmediately, I prayed for God to forgive me and change mylife. Now, I study my Bible and complete the discipleshipmaterial that I receive every week. I thank God for changingme and giving me hope. I pray that others here in the prisonwill also be converted. I know now that only in Christ is theretrue freedom to live.

Hector CondoriMy name is Hector Condori and I am 30 years old. Before

I came to prison I worked in the construction business inPeru and had a wife and two daughters. I liked to drink verymuch, but at the same time I was a hard working person. Oneday I met a man that was involved in drug trafficking and heconvinced me that I could have a better life selling drugsthan working hard in construction. I believed the lie and wassoon selling drugs. In 1997, I was caught and put in prisonhere in Paraguay. The day I was thrown in jail I thought thatmy life had come to an end and then one year later I becamea Christian through the ministry of Dino Ortiz. I am so thank-ful that God reached out to me in my darkest hour and savedme when I thought I was going to go insane. My family lives

here in Asuncion and I hope to be united with them soon. Iam grateful to God for giving me a new life and for keeping mein His power. I want to continue to live for Him all the days ofmy life. Please pray for me. I go to church with Dino, studymy Bible regularly and will be baptized soon.

Richardo ArguelloMy name is Richardo Arguello and I am 23 years old. I

am in jail because from my childhood I have lived a verydisorderly and wicked life doing whatever my corrupt heartdesired. I was the owner of a house of prostitution, was analcoholic and drug addict. I am in prison for stealing a car andbeating up a policeman. I became a Christian this year whenI repented of my sins and trusted Christ to come into my lifeand change me. I asked Him to cleanse my dirty and sick lifeand He did. I am now studying the Bible and going to churchhere in the prison. I trust that little by little I will become likeChrist.

Enrique RojasMy name is Enrique Rojas and I am 39 years old. My

father passed away when I was 8 years old and my motherdid not discipline me. I took advantage of her lack of disci-pline and lived my life in the way it pleased me. All this broughtterrible consequences. I never learned to respect authority orthe law, and am now reaping prison as a result. Since myadolescent years I have been in and out of prison many timesand for many different crimes. This last time I was put inprison for armed robbery. I have been a Christian for the lastfour years and am growing in the Lord. I was converted oneday when I heard someone preaching and discovered thatChrist could forgive my sins no matter what I had done. I wasvery surprised to hear this because I thought that only “good”people had access to God and that God could only forgivethe sins of someone who was deserving. I never thoughtGod could forgive the sins of someone like me. That day Icried out to Him to forgive me and change my sinful life. Afterfour years, I can still bear witness that He did change me onthat day. Now I live for Him and thank Him for His greatsalvation.

Roman RiverosMy name is Roman Riveros and I am 20 years old. I have

lived most of my life on the streets as a drug addict and anthief. This last time, I was put in prison for armed robbery. Ibecame a Christian just a few months ago. I cried out to theLord and admitted that I needed Him because my life was acomplete waste. I asked Him to forgive me and make me intoa new creature. I go to the church here in prison and do mydiscipleship lessons faithfully. Please pray for me that I willbe more like Christ.

Oscar RamosMy name is Oscar Ramos and I am 21 years old. As a

boy I was a hard worker and minded my own business, but Ilacked character and became influenced by others. Finally, I

was put in prison for aggravated robbery. When I was put inprison I felt like everything was a bad dream. It seemed im-possible that a short time earlier I had been a regular guy thatworked and lived like any other. Then in a few month’s time Ifound myself in jail surrounded by “criminals.” The worstpart of it all was that I was a criminal myself and resposible foreverything that had happened in my life. The ones that hadbeen my best friends turned their back on me and I was allalone. On day I was invited to church to listen to the preach-ing. That night I repented of my sin and asked God to saveme and cleanse me from my sin. Now I thank God that I cameto prison because it was here in my greatest darkness that Iheard about God and looked up to Him for my salvation.

Juan GorgoitiaMy name is Juan Gorgoitia and I am 44 years old. I have

been a delinquent and I drug addict for 23 years of my life. Ihave been involved in terrible sins and lived a miserable lifefrom my youth. I came to prison convicted of armed robbery.I have been in jail more times than I can count, and each timeI have been guilty of the crime. I came to know the Lord as mySavior in 1987 while I was in prison in Chile. I heard theGospel and was converted. I was later extradited to Paraguayand continue here in prison. Since my conversion, I havebeen studying the Word of God and growing in His knowl-edge. I am an active worker in our prison church, and spendmy time in witnessing and helping others to hear the GoodNews. I work with brother Dino to disciple the new believersand am at peace knowing that God holds my life in His hands.I thank Him for what He is doing in my life and for what Hewill do. Please pray for all of us, that we may grow in likenessto Christ, and please remember the ones that still do notknow Him.

Santos Viera CarmonaMy name is Santos Viera Carmona and I am 22 years old.

My brother and I stole cars and then repainted them in hismechanic shop, but finally we were caught by the police andsent to prison. I became a Christian in 1998 through one ofthe ladies that works in the ministry with brother Dino. Shespoke to me about what Christ had done and how he hadbore my sins. Because of this, I repented and believed in Him.I told the Lord that I knew that I was a sinner and that Ineeded His forgiveness for all the terrible things I had done.Since my conversion, He has begun to change my life. Now Iread the Word of God and am involved in the discipleshipclass with brother Dino.

Nimio MoranMy name is Nimio Moran and I am 34 years of age. I

thank God for saving my soul because I know that I wouldnot have lived very long if I had continued in my terrible lifeof sin and destruction. I am now in prison because of armedrobbery and battery. I became a drug addict when I was veryyoung, but I always thought that I had control of my life andthat I could quit smoking marihuana whenever I wanted. Little

by little I became involved in delinquency and robbery.Through all this, I destroyed my family and my own life. Itwas terrible because I could not stop doing what I was doingand thought that I had no way out. I was finally thrown inprison for the bad choices I made, but God had mercy on meand sent Dino to witness to me about Christ and what He haddone for me on the cross. I am now a new creature, growingand learning more about God and His Word.

Ramon RodriguezMy name is Ramon Rodriguez and I am 22 years old.

When the economy failed in my country I did not have verymuch to live on and so I stole cattle from a rancher. As I wasleaving the ranch I realized that my plan would fail and so Iattempted to return the cattle secretly. In the process of re-turning the cattle, I was caught by the police and was sen-tenced to three years in prison. I had never done anythinglike that before, but that is no excuse and so I must pay for mycrime. One day I became very sick and was sent to the prisoninfirmary. As I laid there all alone, one of the Christians thatcome to the prison with brother Dino stood by me and heldmy hand. He was very kind and spoke to me about the Lord.I was too sick to remember anything he said, but I remem-bered his kindness. When I was well, I looked for him tothank him. He shared the Gospel with me and I was saved. Now I am growing and reading God’s Word every day.

Oracio OcampoMy name is Oracio Ocampo and I am 20 years old. Before

I became a Christian, I did many terrible things that I am tooembarrassed to even mention to you. My life was a terrible

example of what happens to someone that does not respectauthority. I was thrown in prison because of the many crimesthat I have committed. Once in prison, I became so sick thateveryone thought I was going to die. That day some Chris-tians came and prayed for me and God healed me. After this,God saved me from my sins and now I can testify of his greatlove and the forgiveness of sins that comes through believ-ing in Christ. Even now, salvation is so wonderful for me thatI can hardly believe that God has forgiven me and taken mysins away.

Oscar SoteloMy name is Oscar Sotelo, I am 40 years old and I have

been in prison for four years. Before I came to prison I drovea bus and worked hard. In spite of this I was a very angry andviolent man. No one could tell me anything without me get-ting angry and because of this I killed a man. I became aChristian in 1998, when I heard brother Dino preaching and Irealized that I had nothing left in this life. My family hadrejected me, and no one ever came to visit me, because I wasa terrible man and I deserved the rejection of all. I thoughtthere was no remedy for my life and how I had destroyed it.One day, hearing about God’s love, I asked Christ to pleaseforgive me and change my life. I now thank Him for saving mysoul. I thank Him for helping me to leave my anger and bitter-ness behind little by little and to submit to Him. I am nowattending school here in prison and have learned to read andwrite. I am also being discipled by brother Dino. I thank Godfor His Word and for brother Dino and the Christians thatminister with him here in Tacumbu.

Luis PerezMy name is Luis Perez and I am 34 years old. I have been

a thief for as long as I can remember. When I was just a child,I began stealing small things and gradually grew worse. Myparents never really did anything to correct me. I lived my lifestealing from hard working people and spending the moneyon myself, my family and my girlfriend. They never knewwhere the money came from because I always deceived themand lied to them about what I had and how I had gotten it. Ithought I was good because I helped my family, but I endedup causing them great pain and grief when I was thrown inprison for robbery. In my last two years in prison, God hashad great mercy on me. One day I was invited to the servicesheld by Dino and the other Christians. There I heard themessage of salvation. At first, I was hard and did not caremuch about what I heard, but then I began to see how Godhad changed the lives of many of the inmates that I thoughtwere “worse” than me. After my conversion, I began to growspiritually in the study of God’s Word. Now, I am able todisciple other new believers in the prison. Thanks to brotherDino Ortiz who helps me with my Bible studies I am growingin the Lord. Please pray for me that I will be useful for Godand His kingdom even in this prison. There are many souls toreach still.

Eliseo RomeroMy name is Eliseo Romero and I am 24 years old. Before

Christ came into my life I was a thief, a drug addict and adrunk. I lived to steal and hurt people in order to get what Iwanted. I never desired to change or live any other way. Ibecame a delinquent at a very early age. Even as a teenager,I hardly ever ate food. I only drank and consumed drugs. Iwas also very proud and bragged that the police would nevercatch me for all the crimes I had committed. I thought I wasvery smart and quick until the day that I was captured by thepolice and put in prison for four years. Once in prison, Ialmost went crazy. I could not believe that someone as quickand “smart” as I could end up rotting in a prison cell. One daywhen I had completely given up living, I heard brother DinoOrtiz preaching about the real prison of sin that could entrapour lives for all eternity and that only Christ could give ussalvation. At first, the message made me angry, because tome it was ridiculous and useless. I thought that God was thelast person that I needed. I needed something more practicallike money to hire a good lawyer. Nevertheless, not long afterthat first sermon, my attitude toward the Gospel began tochange and I surrendered my life to Christ. I came to theconclusion that there was nothing else that I could do. I hadnever done anything right in my life and I needed His help. Iasked God to save me one day while I was sitting in my cell.I was desperate and cried out to Him to please forgive me andgive me another chance. He has.

Juan SegoviaMy name is Juan Segovia, I am 30 years old and I have

been in prison for two years. I was a very lazy person that

stole and deceived every one so that I could have what Iwanted without any effort. I was very rebellious to my par-ents, and in time became an irresponsible father and hus-band. Finally, my wife and children were forced to leave mebecause I would not provide for their needs and care forthem. I was a failure in every way. Now I am in prison forstealing from the only people that tried to believe in me andgive me a chance. I let them down and took advantage ofthem when they were only trying to help me get back on myfeet. When finally even they accused me before the authori-ties I was very angry and wondered how they could do sucha thing, but now I know that I deserved this and even more. Ipraise God for bringing me here where I have been humbledand brought to see my need for Him in my life. He is the onlyone who can change me and is changing me. I came to knowChrist through one of the ladies (Charo Washer’s mother)that comes with brother Dino. She spent a great deal of timeteaching me how to draw and telling me about the love ofGod and how His Son had died to save me from my sins. Sheencouraged me to congregate faithfully with the group ofbelievers in the prison and to study God’s Word. I thank Godfor His mercy toward me a pitiful sinner. Please remember mein your prayers.

Nancy MujicaMy name is Nancy Mujica and I am 20 years old. I am

my love would change him and that we would live a happylife, but I was wrong. He was put in prison for robbery andnow I am alone with my daughters, providing for them andhaving many trials. In spite of all this, I praise God that myhusband and I were able to meet brother Dino and the otherChristians in Tacumbu. They spoke to us about God and howHe could change our lives in spite of all our sin. My husbandmust remain in prison a few more years, but we now have theLord and He encourages us to hope and to live. I thank Godfor the brothers and sisters that assist all the prisoners herewith counsel and encouragement from God.

Ministry Update -Fire in Prison Kills Six

This ministry update came in today as I was finishingup this article on Dino’s ministry. Please read the updatecarefully and prayerfully. Once again, thank you. It is yourgenerous giving that makes this ministry possible. - PaulWasher

The ministry continues to advance this new year. Manyof the young boys we ministered to have left the juvenileprison of Panchito Lopez. Some have been moved on toTacumbu, the adult men’s prison and others have been giventheir long awaited freedom. This creates mixed feelings in myheart but my hope for these young men is in the God who hassaved them and will carry out His plan in their lives. Sadly, as

Young prisoners awaiting their discipleship class. For those who have experienced the power of God in salvation, thisdark prison has become the means through which they have come to know the freedom that is only found in Christ.

some leave, others come to take their place in these prisoncells, but we are here through God’s grace to minister to themwith the Gospel. It is such a joy to see these young men cometo know the Lord and to hear them sing praises. This is onlysomething God can do! Mouths that once cursed and spokefilthy things now lift up His Name with gratitude.

This past week there was a riot in cell block # 8 of theprison where 30 prisoners held. Six of these prisoners de-cided to commit suicide by setting their mattresses on fire.Due to all the turmoil and the fire the guards could not openthe doors soon enough and six died, seven are in intensivecare and the rest have suffered burns. We were able to sharethe Gospel with many of these young men and a large num-ber of them have made professions of faith. Please pray forthem and for us as we disciple and help them.

The ministry in the adult prison of Tacumbu continuesalso. There I visit the young boys that have been transferredfrom Panchito Lopez. God continues to open doors and toenable us to cross them. I am encouraged to see many pris-oners studying their Bibles with great joy and desire. One ofthem who has completed his term in prison is now attendingchurch faithfully with his wife. Another who was also re-leased from prison has traveled to Germany to meet his wifeand children there. Please continue to pray for my documen-tation and that I be given a visa to stay here permanently inParaguay. Please remember me in your prayers that I may findfavor in the eyes of the authorities that will review my case.

Being aGoodSteward

The Little Things You DoBuying a bicycle may not seem like a great event in world missions, but for a national missionary in a rural area of some

third world country it can be a long awaited answer to prayer. As individual Christians we cannot “win the world” alone or beeverywhere God is working in the world, but we do have the wonderful priviledge of meeting small, and sometimes seeminglyinsignificnt needs that result in the furtherance of someone else’s ministry. At HeartCry, our great desire is to find the missinglink in ministries around the world and fill the gap so that others may go on to greater fruitfulness. This missing link issometimes met by sponsoring national missionaries, building church buildings or distributing Bibles. Sometimes it involvesnothing more than buying a bicycle that a national missionary may use to visit the lost and minister to the church.

In the following are a few examples of how you are filling in the “missing link” in the ministries of individual missionariesaround the world. We want to thank you on their behalf and encourgage you with the words of Paul in II Corinthians 9:8-12:

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, youmay have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written, “HE SCATTERED ABROAD, HE GAVE TOTHE POOR, HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ENDURES FOREVER.” Now He who supplies seed to the sower andbread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteous-ness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving toGod. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is alsooverflowing through many thanksgivings to God.”

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NAB)

In this photograph, brother Cruz Kautuashof the Aguaruna Tribes of Condor Conquistands with HeartCry missionary Francisco“Paco” Laos to receive the “peke peke” out-board motor that was donated to the churchthrough your giving. The Christians among theAguarunas are zealous to share the Gospel withother communities that have yet to hear. Themotor will dramatically reduce the time neededto travel to each community and allow the mis-sionaries to reach communities that were be-fore beyond their reach. The tribes of the Ama-zon basin refer to the outboards as “pekepekes,” because of the sound they make as theyare running down the river.

Another “peke peke” motor was also givento national Peruvian missionary Roque Dárrlawho will use it to make missionary jouneys onthe Amazon River to travel to the numerous vil-lages under his care.

Please pray for the works in all the junglesof Peru and among all the unreached peoplegroups of the world. For the harvest is greatamong them and yet the workers are few. Prayfor the faithful and dedicated men and womenwho struggle to overcome great barriers tomake the Gospel of Jesus Christ known to ev-ery creature on earth.

Arturo Marin is a national Peru-vian missionary supported byHeartCry. He works in the junglesof San Rafael in the northeast sec-tion of Peru. The work which heand his wife Gladys initiated ayear and six months ago has grownto over 40 baptized members. WhenPaul Washer visited Arturo, sixmonths ago, he notice that theyoung missionary often spenthours walking down dirt roads toevanglize the huts and houses thatwere often separated by more thana mile. As Arturo walked, other vil-lagers would speed by on their bi-cycles. With less than $200, two bi-cycles were purchased for Arturoand Gladys, and another for a Pe-ruvian missionary in a near by vil-lage, who is not associated withHeartCry. Paul and missionaryArturo Marin appear in the pho-tograph above.

In this photograph, Canadian missionary Andy Large is delivering $1200 to the Pastors and leaders of the Church in theleper colony of San Pablo. This will help advance the work and bring us near the end of the construction project. Theproject that we began last year is now drawing to a close. It is just one more example of God’s faithfulness to His people.Thank you for your gracious giving that has made this possible.

Under Fire in MoldovaMissionary Salvic Spataru

This year we have started a new church in Vinatori along with a new evangelistic outreach ministry. I must confess thatwhen we began, I did not expect many people to attend since it is rather an intellectual community. Nevertheless our effortswere blessed beyond our faith. In the first meeting, three adults repented of their sins and thirty teenagers and children werein attendence.

Because of our success, there arose many reactions of hate and opposition. It is the most difficult and fearful situationthat I have had to confront in my entire ministry. The priests from the cities of Vinatori and Saueni spoke many bad wordsabout us to the village people. They also threatened to burn our church to the ground and to cause great trouble to all ourmembers. As one priest has said, we are nothing more than garbage in the eyes of the people.

In spite of the persecution, something wonderful has happened. Many of the young people who were the worst in thevillage, have now been transformed by the power of Christ. The people, and even the priest recognize this, but they still donot repent. It only serves to make them hate us more. We are not surprised by their actions, because they are blinded by theirhatred toward us. Regardless of what happens, we will be ready to pay any price for our Saviour and for the lost people ofVinatori.

I have some very good news to tell you about my family. We have adopted another little girl. Her name is Linda and sheis eight years old. She had no father, and her mother abandoned her. Her relatives are very wicked people who drink all thetime and only kept her so that she could work in their fields and feed their sheep and goats. When we found her she was onthe street very dirty and wearing only tattered rags. When we brought her to our house, she was very frightened and wouldcry herself to sleep, but now she is very happy. Our two other children, Mary and John are very happy to have another sisterand they play together as best friends. We are teaching her the alphabet and numbers so that soon she will be able to go toschool. Please pray for her.

Preaching Tapes Available

The Gospel of Jesus Christ (001) by Paul David Washer

This sermon deals with the content of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The two great pillars of the Gospel are the death ofChrist for sinners and the Resurrection of Christ from the dead. These two great truths must not only be proclaimed to thelost, but they must be clearly explained. This sermon, begins with the holiness and justice of God that demands the judgmentof the guilty. It then moves on to the radical depravity of man, his moral inablilty to save himself, and his impending judgment. The sermon finally reaches it goal in an exposition of Chirst’s death under the wrath of God and His resurrection from the deadthrough which our salvation is made possible. The following is an excerpt from the sermon:

“For I preached to you as of first importance what also I received.” The most important thing in the ministry and preachingof Paul the apostle was the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I am so tired of hearing people speak about “higher things” than theGospel. I am so sick of all these “new teachers” with their new television programs that have so many “higher things” toteach you, and yet they pass over completely the greatest message ever told. There is no greater theology, there is nogreater truth than what God has done for you in Jesus Christ on that cross. The greatest theology in all the Bible is foundin the first three chapters of Ephesians, and the whole thing is about Jesus, His life and death. My friend there is no greaterthing, there is no greater message than the Gospel, the Gospel, the Gospel. The more you understand it, the more you willdesire to grow in grace and holiness. The Gospel of Christ will promote you, push you, and impel you by the love of God.

The Reason behind Missions (002) by Paul David Washer

This sermon deals with the motivation or reason behind missions. What can move an individual to give their life tomissions? What can sustain them once they are on the mission field? Although there are many motivations for doingmissions, there is only one great motivation able to sustain us until the end - our desire that God be glorified among thenations and that His great Name be praised among every nation, tribe and people and tongue. The following is an excerptfrom the sermon:

I speak on behalf of the missionaries that are gathered here today, and on behalf of the missionaries I represent in thejungles of Peru, and in the Andes mountains and in Romania and several places around the world. Men who at this momentare not dressed in fine suits, but have no shoes; men who might even be stoned today, because they have been stoned before.Men who live in huts and journey in small boats. They are laughed at by the world and yet they are men and women ofwhom the world is not worthy. When we think about missions we should look beyond orators, look beyond men, to the verycenter of all things - the heart and mind of God. If we do not begin there we can never understand what missions is truly allabout. What we are going to talk about today is God. Missions do not begin with John 3:16, “For God so loved the world,”or even with Matthew 28:18-20, “Go ye therefore,” but the Gospel begins with Genesis 1:1, and “In the beginning God.”From where does the fire for missions come? Where do we find passions for missions? Does it come from some romantic ideaof pouring out your heart and life for people who will lovingly receive you? No, it most certainly does not. We are not goingout into this world to preach to victims, but we are going out into this world to preach to rebels who hate God. People whowill sometimes take our Bibles and tracts and throw us out into the middle of the street. What is strong enough to make uswalk right back into the middle of town square to preach again? Is it the reception of the people? No, it is the glory of Godand a passion for that glory. And so when we talk about missions we must begin with God.

The HeartCryMissionary Society is dedicated to the task of fulfilling the Great Commission through sponsoring national pastors and missionaries in theforeign field.

In step with our passion, is our commitment to be good stewards of that which has been entrusted to us.
