Bsu Weekend previeW

The Beavers are coming off a weekend in which they pulled off the upset of No. 21 Augustana on Saturday. BSU was unable to follow-up the performance on Sunday against No. 9 Wayne State but still came away from the weekend with a positive outlook. The win over the Vikings ends an eight-game losing streak for BSU against Augustana dating back to 1983. The victory was also the first for the Beavers over a ranked opponent since defeating defending National Champion Minnesota State in December of 2009.

The Beavers got strong performances from several players on the weekend led by senior Colleen McKay (C, Barnum, Minn.) who averaged 16 points and nine rebounds in two games. Fellow senior Anna Hebrink (G, Austin, Minn.) was also key for BSU against No. 21 Augustana as she poured in four threes to help her to 18 points against Augie.

Bsu ranked in TOp 25 naTiOnally FOr Free ThrOWs

The BSU women’s basketball team dropped to No. 22 nationally this week in free-throw percentage according to the NCAA National Statistics Summary for Division II. The Beavers had been No. 4 nationally but their struggles from the charity stripe on Saturday against No. 21 Augustana College led to a fall in the overall free-throw rank-ings. BSU shot only 65.7 percent from the free-throw line last weekend. Freshman Ellie Wessling (G/F, Winsted, Minn.) with an 82.6 percentage, which ranks 79th in the nation individually.

Beaver pride aThleTe OF The Week

BSU has had three players honored as the Beaver Pride Female Athlete of the Week so far this season. Colleen McKay (Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.) earned her second honor of the season after averaging 16 points and nine rebounds as the Beavers split with No. 21 Augustana and No. 9 Wayne State. McKay along with Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, Austin, Minn.) and (Fr., G/F, Winsted, Minn.) are the three Beaver players to be honored this season.

Bsu againsT ranked FOes

Bemidji State has played some of their best games this season against teams ranked in the top 25. On Nov. 19 at the Maverick Classic in Mankato, Minn., the Beavers came within two points in the waning seconds against No. 19 California University (Pa.) but ultimately came short. Then last Saturday the Beavers followed up their early season performance with an upset of No. 21 Augustana College. The win is the first victory for BSU over a ranked opponent since upended defending National Champion Minnesota State University, ranked No. 11 at the time, on Dec. 19, 2009. BSU struggled in their last ranked game on Sunday as they fell to conference-leading Wayne State College, ranked No. 9 in the country.

lee Beginning TO Make iMpacT

The daughter of Bemidji State men’s basketball’s all-time leading scorer David Lee, Morgan Lee (Fr., G, Hayward, Wis.) is beginning to make more and more of an impact for the Beavers as her freshman season progresses. Lee has seen an increased amount of playing time over the last few games for the Beavers. Last week Lee tallied a career-high 15 points on six of shooting from the field against Minnesota Duluth and also added 11 points in BSU’s upset of No. 21 Augustana. The two scoring performances served as Lee’s first double-figure scoring outings for BSU. Lee still has a ways to go to reach the level her father once was at as a Beaver men’s basketball player. David Lee had 2,034 career points. His daughter Morgan still needs 1,962 points to surpass her father’s outputs.

rOad WOes

Bemidji State has lost their last eight games on the road dating back to Jan. 29, 2010 when they defeated Minnesota State at the Taylor Center, 71-69. The Beavers are 0-3 in road games this year losing their last contest to Minnesota Duluth at Romano Gymna-sium 99-76. The Beavers will look to end the streak when they begin a four-game road stretch on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 against St. Cloud State and Concordia-St.Paul.

epeMa WaTch

Sydney Epema (Jr., G, Crookston, Minn.) had shown her prowess from beyond the arc through two-and-a-half seasons in Bemidji as she currently ranks fifth all-time for career threes with 139. Epema needs 27 threes to surpass Kris DeMaris in fourth place. Epema had 56 made three-pointers as a sophomore after tallying 73 as a freshman. Her 73 made three-pointers still ranks third all-time for most made threes in a season.
