What is Breakthrough?Breakthrough is a year-round, tuition-free, academic program that helps promising middle school students build skills and confidence to enter and succeed in college preparatory high school programs. Breakthrough students begin their path to college as fifth graders, when they self-select and go through a rigorous application process. Throughout middle school, students participate in a variety of summer and after-school programs aimed at skill-building and enrichment. The majority of Breakthrough students come from low-income families, identify as an underrepresented minority in higher education, and/or will be the first in their families to earn a college degree.

Why teach at Breakthrough?Breakthrough Manchester is one of the most exciting volunteer opportunities for high school and college students in New Hampshire. As a teacher intern, you will gain skills and confidence as a leader and mentor. You will work alongside other students who are excited about education and eager to work with our remarkable middle schoolers, helping them hone the skills they will need to be academically successful. No previous experience is necessary – just a love of learning and interest in working with middle schoolers.

What will I be responsible for as a Super Saturday teacher?Your responsibilities will include:

co-planning and co-teaching a lesson on a topic of your choice;• co-planning and co-teaching a professionally designed skill-based lesson in writing or math;• working with a small group of students – your advisees – throughout the year;• helping to facilitate activities, team-building games, and other community events.•

You will be trained and supported by a professional Mentor Teacher as well as the Breakthrough professional staff as you learn the art of teaching.

What is the time commitment?Super Saturday teachers are expected to attend all dates that are listed below. Additionally, teachers will need to devote a number of hours beyond the program schedule to individual class preparation and group planning meetings. Breakthrough is a significant commitment - in order to build a strong community for our students, you must understand that if you teach at Breakthrough, we expect your full commitment and communication. If you know of a conflict, please let us know as soon possible – it will not necessarily exclude you from consideration.
