3ut Spring i s not the season f o r harsh words I t i s the tdxe f o r enjoying l i f e but camy of us are sot able to j o i n i n the glad awakening a f t e r winter The threat of exams though st i l 1 fax o f f looms before us and we tend to regard the master vac as a time to catch up on course work We hope however that a l l the time w i l l not be occupied w i t h l a b reports and that there w i l l be time to speculate I t may be on dogs horses f o o t b a l l pools or even the stock exchange ( f o r those who have been attending LSE) but perhaps some-thought might be given to a c t i v i t i e s at IC

You may not be s a t i s f i e d w i t h the way things are rum nothing can please everyone a l l the time You can always w r i t e to F3IX about i t (which i s very nearly where we came in) but next t e c s i s the time when there i s another way of making changes I t i s the time of the AGMs of the various clubs and s o c i e t i e s (although some have already been h e l d ) Now i s the time to t h i n k of the people who w i l l be most s u i t a b l e fox your clubs and s o c i e t i e s

I n many o f the sports c l u b s i t i s common p r a c t i c e to e l e c t the best players as o f f i c e r s This may be a l r i g h t as f a r as captains axe concerned but the best p l a y e r s are o f t e n the l e a s t s a t i s f a c t o r y o f sectxetaxies and t r e a s u r e r s F l a y i n g i n various f i x t u r e s prevents them from p u t t i n g i n the time needed fox the club t o run smoothly whereas a l e s s p r o f i c i e n t player w i l l have an opportunity to help the club to a fax greater extent than he could by a c t i v i t i e s on the f i e l d Thexe axe many such considerations i n e l e c t i n g our o f f i c e r s and the best men fox the jobs are not always the most obvious A l i t t l e thought

Mark came t o I C i n 1949 from t h e South Y o r k s h i r e c o a l f i e l d s a f t e r passing through a Co-ed s c h o o l He g r a d u a t e d i n Mathematics i n two y e a r s u n d e r t h e o l d system and f o r reasons b e s t known t o h i m s e l f took to Chem Tech He s t i l l works t h e r e on a g a l l e r y above the r e s t o f t h e room Nobody t h e r e mdash i n c l u d i n g h i m s e l f mdash seems t o have n o t i c e d what he works a t except h i s a s s i s t a n t

In t h e U n i o n he s t a r t e d q u i e t l y as Secshyr e t a r y o f th e Musical Society and then became i t s P r e s i d e n t and Hon Sec o f th e SCC W h i l e P r e s i d e n t o f t h e Mus Soo he was onoe s t u d e n t h o s t t o Anthony Hopkins The l a t t e r about t o play a sonata asked him to stand by and turn the s c o r e whereupon Mark announced hi s i n a b i l i t y t o read scores He s t i l l cannot read them does not intend t o l e a r n and has no apologies on that point He i s a confirmed Wagnerite also l i k e s Mahler and B e r l i o z and romantics i n general
