This three-bay. Italianate-style building possesses a one-story. full-length open porchsupported by square columns and paired brackets. Six-over-six sash are found throughoutthe building. Square in form. a common characteristic of the style. the house consistsof a hip roof with overhanging eaves which accentuate the wide entablature and pairedbrackets. Narrow attic vents are placed within the cornice. A modern addition existson the southeast elevation.

In 1860 William Griswold sold an acre lot to Charles H. Graham for $225 (FLR 58:110).Graham (1837-1920) was born in New Britain to William and Almira (Wilmot) Graham and marrierEmeline Upson (1837-1906). daughter of Seth and Martha Upson. in December of 1860. Childrlborn to Charles and -Emeline were Walter Edwin (1863-1951). Lila E. (l868-1883). SamuelFrisbie (1871~1935). Henry Charles (1873-?) and Winifred (1879-1898). By October of 1861Graham sold one-half interest in the "one acre of land with all buildings" for $900 to hismother-in-law. Martha Upson (FLR 58:347). In 1874 Martha sold her one-half interest backto her son-in-law for $3.000 who in turn granted her a mortgage which was released in 1890(FLR 70:221). Next Charles transferred ownershIp of the property to his wife Emeline (FLR68:513). After her death in 1907. Charles received title of the house and land again asEmeline's will requested (FLR 74:150). In 1911 he sold the estate to one of his two surviv-ing children. Walter Edwin (FLR 77:398). then he moved to 101 Main Street which his wife hacinherited from her sister, Minerva Upson. At Walter's death in 1951. his children sold theproperty out of the family.Charles Graham began his career at age 18 in Dwight Langdon's nut and bolt factory. Afterthe company changed hands to Andrew Upson and George Dunha~Graham became superintendentfor fifteen years. He was elected treasurer of the company. now named the Upson Nut Companyin 1897. He also served as secretary of the Union Nut and Bolt Company. assistant treasurerof Union Rolling Mill Company. and vice-president of the Unionville Water Company. He ismost famous for inventing the automatic lathe for threading bolts. (see below)

Owners

In April 1860 Charles Graham bought "1 acre more or less"from William Griswold on "Lovely street road" (58-110). InOctober 1861 he sold a half interest in land and buildings tohis mother-in-law Martha Upson (58-347). So this house wasbuilt in 1860 or 1861.,

In 1874 Martha Upson sold her i-interest back to CharlesGraham; he promptly mortgaged it to her, a debt that was notsettled until 1890 (70-221). Then in 1890 Charles transferredownership of' the property to his wife Emeline (68-513,514). In1907, after Emeline's death, Charles again became owner (74-150).In 1911 he sold it to his eldest son Walter (77-398); probablyabout the same time he moved to 101 Main st. to live with anotherson, Sam Frisbie Graham, and his family. Walter and his familylived here until 1951. Thul!lthe Graham family owned this housefor 90 years.

At the age of 18, Charles Graham started his career as ahand in Dwight Langdon's nut and bolt nictory; when Langdon diedand the business was taken over by Andrew Upson and George Dunham,Charles Graham became a shipper and was once gi ven a contract tomake nuts and bolts for them. Then he became sllperintendsnt oftheir fs.ctory, a position which lasted 15 years, during whichtime the company became the Upson Nut Co. Wlu~nSamuel Frisbiedied in 1897, Charles Graham was elected to replace him as Tressurerof Upson Nut Co.; h~ was Treasurer until 1912. He was alsoSecretary of the Union Nut & Bolt Co., assistant Treasurer orUnion Rolling Mill Co., and Vice President or' the UnionvilleWater Co. He was the inventor or an aut omatic Lat he for thr-eadLngbolts. Two biographies of' Mr. Graham appear in the FarmingtonRoomof the Village Library - in "Encyclopedia of Biography",Vol. 2, p , 62, and in "Commemorative Biogrsphical Record ofHartford County", p. 874.
