LEADERSHIP REPORTING STRUCTURE

Page 8: HSSU Student Affairs Metatheodel Presentation

LEADERSHIPREPORTING STRUCTURE• The previous leadership structure did not connect offices that worked

closely with students.• The offices work in silos rather than intentional connection for

optimal student success.• Changes in the reporting structure...

– Creation of middle management to supervise the process and work of the assigned office.

– Consolidated several departments to focus on their collective work.– Eliminate vacant leadership positions.

STUDENT AFFAIRS PARADIGM • Within the HSSU’s Student Affairs structure operates on both the involvement and student affairs

paradigm.• The involvement paradigm allows HSSU the ability to provide student organizations for the student body,

in turn, will create student productivity as well as a friendly-oriented environment. • The student affairs paradigm consists of a vast amount of academic and support services. HSSU offers

services such as career services, disability support services, tutoring, academic advising, financial aid, etc. which will allow students to greatly succeed in their college experience.

• Combined, the paradigms offer a collaborative relationship that will produce a student’s growth in college, introduce developmental awareness, and the adaption of students to a myriad of academic and support services.

PARTNERSHIP WITH ACADEMIC AFFAIRS• HSSU has an unique partnership with academic affairs which are found within their academic and university departments

such as the Anhenser-Busch School of Business, the College of Arts & Sciences, Office of Student Success, AT&T Library & Technology Resource, etc.

• Also, HSSU offers a great TRIO/SSS (Student Support Services) program to low-class/students of color/disadvantaged backgrounds whom will receive tutoring and academic/social services from the faculty/staff at the institution.

• Unfortunately, HSSU does not offer any orientation to the student body (especially pertaining to 1st year/transfer students). However, a model was created by our group to ensure (if implemented by HSSU), then orientation awareness will occur.

• Within the orientation model, orientation will occur for 1st year/transfer students, parents/guardians will be notified about their specific orientation date to be given pertinent information such as financial aid, accepted students will be given a chance to reside on University Housing for at least a week until a decision is made on whether or not, they will reside in UH for the upcoming year, and after the orientation has occurred, students and parents will be given additional source of information about faculty/staff at the institution.

• A good relationship between the partnership with academic affairs is HSSU’s transition and tutoring services which will enhance the student body to increase their student productivity in the classroom and outside of the classroom.

Page 30: HSSU Student Affairs Metatheodel Presentation

CONTRIBUTION TORETENTION/PERSISTENCE • Over a number of years, retention has been an ongoing issue at HSSU. However, just recently the institution has signed

a partnership with USA funds whom has provided an educational grant of $325,000 that will greatly assist with “student retention, timely degree attainment, and producing work-read graduates”. In addition, USA funds will be to “access and track their academic and personal progress” of the entire student body.

• Student Affairs of HSSU will also ensure students are on constant track to graduation in a 4 year time-frame. With the inclusion of the Center for Student Success, Academic Resource Center (houses the Center for Retention). Especially, the Center for Retention will ensure the student body’s ability to graduate from college and achieve success in life.

• HSSU focuses too much on 1st year students, but not enough on 2nd year/continuing/transfer students. Alas, these specific students can possibly encounter retention.

• However, HSSU needs to provide academic advising to continuing/transfer students to ensure that their academic/social needs are being met. Needs pertaining to career changes (major/minor changes), being on-track for graduation, etc.

Page 31: HSSU Student Affairs Metatheodel Presentation

CONTRIBUTIONS TO STUDENT LEARNING• The mission of HSSU is to strongly contribution to student learning by ensuing the effects of higher education is being

provided to the student body as well as the citizens of metropolitan St. Louis, MO area.• Programs such as the Black Male Initiative Mentoring Program (BMI), the Center for Neighborhood Affairs (CNA), etc. will

enhance a student’s experience while enrolled at HSSU. In addition, the student body will be able to partake in community-based service learning opportunities and a study abroad experience from the HSSU-China Scholarship Program.

• HSSU is a gift from God that will make students go on to live a better life.. In the end, students will achieve a great experience at this premier institution.
