Year 1966 was the first term in officeof President Ferdinand E. Marcosafter his election on December 30,1965. His first year showed a lot of

promise, building on the relatively robusteconomy. His dream was to make the Philippinesgreat again, envisioning a New Society (BagongLipunan) which would promote peace, harmonyand progress to its citizens.

Year 1966 was the year when Torres HighSchool celebrated its 40 years of existence. Witha dynamic team composed of Mr. CesarioBandong as the principal and Mr. Rufino delaCruz as the assistant principal, the school stoodvery prominent among the secondary schools allover the country. The school was respected ofall the Manilans and the rest of the Filipinosalike.

April 29 of the same year, a batch ofteen-agers graduated from thisprestigious school. All the speeches in thecommencement ceremony and thewritten publications of the graduatesshowed a lot of reminiscing the past, preparing for the future and enjoying thepure exhilaration of being graduates ofTorres High School. The year’s theme thenwas “Face Reality”. According to thegraduation message of the principal, Mr.Bandong, “It is high time that we facereality. We can not always lay the blamefor the venalities going on around us onthe administration. If we have the graftersand the corruptors, it is because we havetolerated them, nay, even encouragedthem by idolizing the smugglers and the

influence peddlers. Let us face reality andchange our sense of values”. The group ofgraduates, batch 1966 heard the messageamidst the sounds of the Beatles and theFlippers. They left their schoolenthusiastic to face the real world asgraduates and as Filipinos with lots ofhope and a high sense of idealism.

Year 1985, Ferdinand E. Marcos was still thepresident of the Philippines. Throughout his 20-year tenure, there were highs and lows. Tohasten economic development, he implementedeconomic programs which helped the countryto enjoy the period of economic growth fromthe mid-1970s until the early 1980s. Agricultureand industry improved. Tourism rose, alsocontributing to the economy’s growth. Theremittances of overseas Filipino workers whofound employment in different parts of theworld was a major source of economic growth.Because of this, the Gross National Productrose from Php 55 billion in 1972 to Php 193billion in 1980.

But his second term was marked byincreasing civil strife known as the “FirstQuarter Storm”. Lawlessness and violence inboth urban centers and in the country sidesworsened. As the New People’s Army gainedstrength student activism gained strength. Thecountry was in chaos so he had to show morestrength through the imposition of martial law.The Philippine economy suffered a great declineafter the Aquino assassination in 1983. Thisevent also paved the way to the downfall ofPresident Marcos.

The Batch ’66, a group of diversepersonalities was an array of talents andambitions. But after graduation, thehistory of the batch came to a halt to giveway to the personal history of eachalumnus. Each of them had to search theirreason for being, to find their missionhere on earth. Some had to go to collegeto pursue their ambition in life but otherswho because of economic reasons had towork to be able to live. Almost all of themhad to experience the joys and the painsof life. Some had to start another phase oftheir lives, to find their partners in life and

to take on responsibilities as heads offamilies. A few had to end their journeyhere on earth and joined the Creator.

Because of too many preoccupationsin this “after graduation phase of life”,Class ’66 failed to meet as a whole group. Some, however, made connectionsbecause of forced circumstances asclassmates, co-workers, neighbors, andsweet hearts.

Year 1996, the mid-way of the term ofanother strong national leader who was astatesman, President Fidel Ramos. Hisadministration centered on the country’seconomic development. All his efforts werefocused on helping the Philippines reach thestatus of newly-industrialized country by theyear 2000.

This was also the year of a new statusin the batch history when most of themembers were everywhere - building, leading and making a difference. Many ofthem were already accomplished so theyhad more time to reconnect themselveswith the past. The effort was initiated bytwo people, Antonio O. Yu and GloriaTolentino-Baysa in a far away province ofPangasinan. They both agreed to have areunion. Tony Yu placed an advertisementin the newspapers regarding the reunion.

The feasibility of having a reunion wasdiscussed during the first meeting thattook place on February 25, 1996 at theJosephine’s Restaurant in RoxasBoulevard. This was attended by theproponents, Tony Yu and Glo TolentinoBaysa. The following also attended andwere very enthusiastic about the plan:Corazon Castro-Rubio, Hector Fernandez,Ariel Rey Juco and Lamberto Trinidad. Theresponsibility of contacting the othermembers of the batch was assigned toBert Trinidad. He asked the assistance ofEdgardo Santos, in this task of searchingother members through a house to housedrive in Gagalangin and other areas inTondo. Ike Robles also gave gasolinetickets for the house to house campaign.

The first meeting to finalize plans for

the grand reunion took place on March10, 1996 at the office of Jerry Santiago’soffice at Project 6, Quezon City. Themembers of the batch who gave theirtime, expertise and other resources tomake the first grand reunion a realitywere the following: the original group ofCora Rubio, Glo Baysa, Tony Yu, HectorFernandez, Bert Trinidad, Jerry Santiago,Ariel Juco and Edgardo Santos. Anothergroup of newly - contacted alumni alsoattended the said meeting: Raul Tangco,Raul Protacio, Ernesto Gadia, WilfredoRubio, Alfredo Salvador, Jr., BenjaminDomingo, Jr. and Augusto Flores (nowdeceased). The six meetings held after thismeeting kicked off the first alumni get -together.

The first Grand Reunion of Batch ’66was held at the library of Torres HighSchool in the afternoon of May 5, 1996. Allthe members of the different committeescame early as nine in the morning for thefinal arrangement and setting-up of theplace. Raul Protacio who was still anemployee of Coca-Cola provided thedrinks and used a roving van to announcethe grand reunion in Gagalangin andother nearby areas of the school. NavyCaptain Ariston de los Reyes invited thesinging group from the Philippine Navyfor the music from the ’60s. It was amemorable and festive affair with arecord of 178 alumni and several guests.Plaques of appreciation were given to 18faculty members who attended. Thecrowd was there to reminisce and tocelebrate. The success of this first grandreunion was made possible because of thecontributions of the following people:Jerry Santiago, Herminia Nuque, GloriaBaysa, Ike Robles, Ariston delos Reyes,Edna Guevara, Oscar Zamora, HonorApolonio, Fely and Catalino Macaraig.

The grand reunion was verymemorable and the members of thebatch would like to have a taste of the

same experience again. So, there wereother get-togethers that followed:

1. The excursion in the traininggrounds of the Philippine Marinesat Ternate, Cavite that was heldJune 2, 1996 through theinitiative of Ariston delos Reyes andEnrique Robles.

2. On December 14, 1996, a firstChristmas Dinner - Dance was heldat the Philippine Navy Officers’Club at Roxas Boulevard.

3. Some members of the batch wenton caroling on December 22, 1996.Instead of asking for donations forthe Christmas Songs that the grouprendered, a box full of groceryitems and other gifts weredistributed to the less fortunatemembers of the batch.

4. The following year, 1997, anotherChristmas Dinner - Dance was heldat the Kowloon House at the WestAvenue, Quezon City. This wasmade possible through the effort ofa small group of members who hadseries of meetings in theCOCOFED office of Emily Silloco -Abeleda.

5. Another Christmas Dinner - Dancewas held at Kowloon House atQuezon City on December, 1998.

These gatherings were a purposefulmix of learning and fun. It offeredopportunities for the members of thebatch to reconnect and to enjoy eachother’s company.

A series of exciting moments in the nation’shistory happened after the term of PresidentFidel Ramos. All these events - the changing ofthe guards, President Joseph Estrada, thenPresident Gloria Macapagal - Arroyo and theEDSA People Power 2 promised a betterPhilippines to all its citizens.

BUT in the history of the batch, theemotions were different. Everything wasquiet after the December, 1998 affair. We

who was then the Vice Chief of Staff of theArmed Forces of the Philippines. It wasinitiated by Serafin Songco who flew fromCalifornia with a request from themembers of the batch in the States tohave a grand reunion in celebration of thebatch’s Ruby Anniversary. In thesemeetings the organizers decided anotherget-together for the batch before thegrand reunion in the year 2006.

And so it happened, through theefforts of a group headed by Ariston delosReyes, Maria Luisa Villafria-de Castro,Edna Guevara, Hector Fernandez, ArielRey Juco, Oscar Orbeta, Renato Pena,Leticia Velasco-Guevara, Corazon Castro-Rubio, Jerry Santiago, Edgardo Santos,Lamberto Trinidad, the husband and wifeteam of Catalino Macaraig and FelicitasLopez-Macaraig, Antonio Yu and CitaCarluen, the following activities wereundertaken:

1. The preparation of a Directory forall the members of the Batch ’66residing in the Philippines andabroad. A Iist of the deceasedmembers was also included in thedirectory.

rested on what has happened in thehistory of the nation and the history ofthe batch. We reflected on the pluses andthe minuses of all the reunions. There wassilence for several years and the batch didnot meet as a whole group.

It has been said that there is a time foreverything and this came into a reality.Suddenly like a sleeping giant, the batchwas able to transcend the concerns ofeveryday life and decided to organize aseries of meetings that started on May 11,2005 at the office of Ariston delos Reyes,

grand reunion of all the alumni ofTorres High School held in itscovered gym last March 18, 2006.

At present everything is beingprepared for the grand reunion, the 40thanniversary of the batch - contacting theother alumni here and abroad, organizingmeetings to prepare the venue and theprogram and soliciting donations forother projects. Hopefully the reunion thatwill be held on December 29, 2006 at theschool grounds of Torres High will notonly be an opportunity for the batch torejoice, reunite, reminisce and recollectbut also to help their beloved alma materin its mission of educating the Filipinoyouth.

It has been said that history is a record ofpast events. The nation’s history is a selectiveinterpretation of what occurred in a particularperiod, country and its people. We, as Filipinosare all a part of the nation’s history. It is butfitting to include the history of Class ’66 as partof the nation’s history.

s 1966 graduates of TorresHigh School, we are gratefuland take pride by the fact

that we were educated by the mostprestigious public high school at the time.High school life was both fun andchallenging... great curriculum; competentteachers; innovative methods ofinstruction; diverse scholastic, spiritualand extra-curricular activities; dynamicstudent-faculty relationship; socio-culturalconsciousness; students’ participation ingovernance and a lot more opportunitiesfor quality secondary education. But inthe midst of all of these intertwinedfactors, there was a common factor that

would bind us together and served as amotivation to pursue greater goals:poverty

When we stepped out of thepremises of THS Compound, we werefaced with other realities which wouldeventually impact on us as we continueour journey after high school. To name afew: the country’s politico-militaryenvironment, the women’s liberationmovement, the US-USSR cold war, thegrowing Beatlemania fanaticism, theHippies and LSD, advancement intechnology, etc.—these confluence ofevents and developments helped shapedour perspectives and choices in life.

Forty years after and looking back, where are we now? To my mind, the lastforty-year existence was a high-point. Itwas during this period that we had spentthe prime time of our lives ... whenopportunities and obstacles came alongour way that would allow us to harnessour talent, determination, discipline, creativity and potential. It was how weresponded to these opportunities and

obstacles that really mattered. By thistime, most of us are either retired, semi-retired or about to retire. And this meansthat, we have already created our ownniche in society, we have already touchedthe lives of many, we have alreadyachieved ‘success’ in terms of our abilities, finances, relationships, religious/spirituallife, health, etc.

In retrospect, THS prepared andequipped us with the basic tools/wherewithal as we entered the universityof life; the condition obtaining at the timemade us more aware of ourresponsibilities, accountabilities and rightsas part of humanity; opportunities andobstacles come and go; but... by and large,it is really up to us if we want to pressforward and achieve greater heights in life. And as we press forward, there will againbe rejections. The greater the rejection, the greater the direction. Doors will beclosed, but newer and better doorswill be opened. We have not gottenthe best yet in life.
