“SUMMARIZE THE HISTORICAL ROOTS OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZING, ADVOCACY, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS.” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“Though history does not repeat itself,

certain trends do cycle. A clear understanding of a community’s history can increase credibility” (Homan, 2011, p.161).

I have learned that every community has a history and as we move forward, there is always a rear view mirror looking at what is behind us.

“SUMMARIZE THE HISTORICAL ROOTS OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZING, ADVOCACY, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS.” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)

“The effect of the ideas and policies inspired by feminism have been profound and the lives of both women and men have changed as a result, both in the developed world and, to a growing extent, in the developing world” (Sargent, 2009, p.176)

I have learned that social movements, such as feminism, can be rooted in specific communities but their ideas could reach out to other groups that could benefit and influence their ways of thinking.

“SUMMARIZE THE HISTORICAL ROOTS OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZING, ADVOCACY, AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS.” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“Your decision to engage in advocacy

will energize and deepen your professional commitment. Your decision to continue learning how to do it well will bring rewards that no attempt at accommodation can ever bring” (Homan, 2011, p.407)

I have learned that it is important to give voice to something that you truly care about. By taking a genuine interest in something, you can make a difference by influencing others to understand why they should support your viewpoint.

“ANALYZE COMMUNITY SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES, AND DESIGN AND EVALUATE PROCESSES TO INITIATE AND SUSTAIN CHANGE THROUGH SPECIFIC STRATEGIES, TACTICS, ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL POLICY ADVOCACY” (KINCAID,2013,P1)

“You may view community through a variety of lenses. It may be considered a place, a set of interests, an identity, a purposeful grouping of individuals into a common whole, a fundamental capacity of our human-ness, a state of being, a manner of people relating to one another, or a provider of benefits that result from effective interaction” (Homan, 2011, p.115)

I have learned that a community can serve many different purposes and it all depends on how you identify yourself with that community. Like the campus of WWU, everyone is associated with the institution whether they are students, professors, and other members of the community.

“The exosystem or the larger institutions of our society, does not directly and immediately envelop us but does influence our personal systems and our network of personal systems” (Homan, 2011, p.90)

I have learned that we have to understand the layers of the systems we are involved in and how each one makes a different impact on yourself. For example, Seattle is part of my larger system, but impacts me differently than how my smaller family system would.

“ANALYZE COMMUNITY SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES, AND DESIGN AND EVALUATE PROCESSES TO INITIATE AND SUSTAIN CHANGE THROUGH SPECIFIC STRATEGIES, TACTICS, ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL POLICY ADVOCACY” (KINCAID,2013,P1)“In any system in which many forces

are acting at the same time, one small action can lead to monumental differences” (Homan, 2011, p.38).

I have learned that in any given community, there are always different things going on at the same time and if one part changes, everything can be changed. In the example of rowing, if one person does something different than everyone else, it can throw the entire dynamic of a boat off.

“ANALYZE COMMUNITY SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES, AND DESIGN AND EVALUATE PROCESSES TO INITIATE AND SUSTAIN CHANGE THROUGH SPECIFIC STRATEGIES, TACTICS, ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL POLICY ADVOCACY” (KINCAID,2013,P1)“Actions in promoting community change

are intended to provoke a response from other people. It is the response that actually sets in motion the process of change” (Homan, 2011, p.49)

I have learned that change sometimes requires us to come out of our comfort zones. We get stuck in our routines and if we want to make a difference, we have to be willing to do things that challenge us to make a difference in the community.

“ANALYZE COMMUNITY SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES, AND DESIGN AND EVALUATE PROCESSES TO INITIATE AND SUSTAIN CHANGE THROUGH SPECIFIC STRATEGIES, TACTICS, ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL POLICY ADVOCACY” (KINCAID,2013,P1)“…We promote the notion of people

believing in themselves, their own learning, and the value of their own ideas” (Homan, 2011, p.56)

I have learned that in order to create change, we have to understand what and how we think as individuals. We all have unique identities and if we can identify who we are, that can help create change in a community.

“RECORD, ASSESS, AND REFLECT ON EXPERIENCES WITH COMMUNITY AND THE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN SERVICES VALUES, ATTITUDES, AND ETHICS IN RELATIONSHIP TO COMMUNITY CHANGE” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“Social entrepreneurship extends

beyond the notion of just finding new ways to generate funding. The goal of transforming conditions is far more important than the goal of making money” (Homan, 2011, p. 262)

This quarter I learned a lot more about how important it is to give a voice to those who can’t but in a way that is interesting and appealing to other members of the community.Photo by Sarah Eadon

“RECORD, ASSESS, AND REFLECT ON EXPERIENCES WITH COMMUNITY AND THE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN SERVICES VALUES, ATTITUDES, AND ETHICS IN RELATIONSHIP TO COMMUNITY CHANGE” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“When confronted with a

challenge, members of the community assume that they can figure out what to do and do it” (Homan, 2011, p.65)

Like the community of Tuscaloosa after the tornado on April 27th, 2011 everyone came together to help one another and rebuild their community. They did not let the devastation of the storm take their confidence. They saw the storm as a chance to become a stronger community.

“RECORD, ASSESS, AND REFLECT ON EXPERIENCES WITH COMMUNITY AND THE INFLUENCE OF HUMAN SERVICES VALUES, ATTITUDES, AND ETHICS IN RELATIONSHIP TO COMMUNITY CHANGE” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)

“Develop, recognize, and be able to rely on a strong value base from which you can draw strength. Find meaning and importance in what you do” (Homan, 2011, p.107)

I have learned that sometimes we get so caught up in wanting to make changes and help others that we start to feel tired. It is important to take time to breathe and when things get difficult, remember why we are in the helping profession.

“ANALYZE THE SYSTEMIC ISSUES RELATED TO CULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND SOCIAL CLASS IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY SYSTEMS” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)

“When change occurs in one part of the system, it will also affect other related systems” (Homan, 2011, p.90)

I have learned that issues that affect systems can have a ripple effect on other parts. For example, the occupy movement is based on the idea that the richest people continue to make more money and those on the other end of the spectrum are suffering because of it.

“ANALYZE THE SYSTEMIC ISSUES RELATED TO CULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND SOCIAL CLASS IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY SYSTEMS” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)

“We can assume that the same messages repeated in institutions that the individual has been taught to respect, such as the religious and educational systems, have a cumulative effect and thereby become part of the individual’s value system” (Sargent, 2011, p.16).

I have learned that we can be influenced by the things we hear and see from our communities. Like the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement and MLK Jr., they wanted to change the way people thought about race and create equality for all.

“ANALYZE THE SYSTEMIC ISSUES RELATED TO CULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND SOCIAL CLASS IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY SYSTEMS” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“With every single person or group you

encounter, and in any practice environment in which you work, you will face problems that need to be addressed through organized action for systemic change” (Homan, 2011, p.89)

I have learned that systems can be faced with many different issues and it is up to the people in the community to address them and advocate for change.

“ANALYZE THE SYSTEMIC ISSUES RELATED TO CULTURE, DIVERSITY, AND SOCIAL CLASS IN THE CONTEXT OF COMMUNITY SYSTEMS” (KINCAID, 2013, P.1)“Recognizing that individual and

community issues are parts of a whole will increase your understanding of circumstances that people face and your ability to provide help” (Homan, 2011, p.91).

I have learned that creating change starts with opening your eyes to what is going on around the community. By educating yourself about the issues in your community, you can contribute to the changes that need to be made.

BE PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER THAN YOURSELF“To begin with, you must

recognize the need for action; then you must give yourself permission to act” (Homan, 2011, p.97)

This quarter I have learned about how important it is to be involved. More specifically, I learned about how to be part of something that is bigger than myself. If you truly care about an issue and want to see change, you have to be able to use your voice and your skills to accomplish what you want to see changed.
