• The worst accident in the history of the chemical industry occurred in the Union Carbide plant at Bhopal, India on 3 December 1984 when a leak of over 25 tonnes of methyl isocyanate (MIC) from a storage tank spread beyond the plant boundary, killing over 2000 people. The official figure was 21532 but according to some reports the true figure was nearer 10 000. In addition about 200 000 people were injured. Most of those killed and injured were living in a shanty town that had grown up close to the plant.

Inherently Safe Design At Bhopal the product (carbaryl) was made from phosgene, methylamine and alpha-naphthol. The first two were reacted together to make MIC which was then reacted with alpha-naphthol. In an alternative process used by the Israeli company Makhteshim, alphanaphthol and phosgene are reacted together to make a chloroformate ester which is then reacted with methylamine to make carbaryl. The same raw materials are used but MIC is not formed at all.

• a new green process for producing an aromatic polycarbonate based on bisphenol-A (hereafter usually abbreviated as PC) without using phosgene and methylene chloride. The new PC production process is the world's first to use carbon dioxide (CO2) as a starting material.

Spathiphyllum

• Several species are popular indoor houseplants. Spathiphyllum cleans indoor air of many environmental contaminants, including benzene, formaldehyde and other pollutants.It cleans best at one plant per 10 m3.It lives best in shade and needs little sunlight to thrive. It is watered approximately once a week. The soil is best left moist but only needs watering if the soil is dry.
