Lack of space for the School was a major concern, especially following it’s rapid growth in faculty and staff over the past five years. This assignment of space has not only alleviated our concern but allowed us to make an offer of employment as a tenure track faculty to Dr. Jennifer Freeman, a post-doctoral toxicologist currently working at Harvard University. I am optimistic that Jennifer will join us and am excited to be able to increase the gender diversity of our faculty. You will likely hear more about Dr. Freeman in the next issue of the Update. I personally under went the University-mandated “5-year” review of my leadership as all those in administrative positions must. I am happy to report that the outcome was extremely positive and afforded an opportunity for positive reflection on the outstanding progress the School has made. As part of the review I was required a self-study on leadership and this laid the foundation for my vision for the School over the next five years. This vision has been a guide to the faculty and staff to complete a draft of the strategic plan and Dr. Carlson will facilitate it’s finalization and approval during the course of the next few months. I wish you all the very best for the next year.

June 2007

From the Department Head George Sandison

Yet another Spring semester has drawn to a close and with it the promise of a fresh beginning and time of renewal. President Martin Jischke will retire in early July http://news.uns.purdue.edu/html3month/2006/060804.Jischke.exit.html

and our new President France Cordova http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2007a/070507McGinleyCordova.html

will arrive to lead us in our efforts to sustain and enhance the educational programs at Purdue as one of the leading ones in the nation. We have just heard that Provost Sally Mason will become President of the University of Iowa. She brings honor and glory to Purdue and it is fitting that her superb efforts have been recognized and rewarded by her appointment to the helm of that fine University. I too will be entering a time of personal renewal as I begin a year of sabbatical leave at cancer institutions and universities in Britain and Australia. Dr. Gary Carlson will be Acting Head in my stead for the year and I am

confident he will nurture the School, faculty, staff and students during this period and it will proceed along the path of success it has trod in the past. We recently received some wonderful news from space management at Purdue. Approximately 1,000 sq. ft. of office space and 1,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space has been assigned to the School. I am optimistic that Jennifer will join us and am excited to be able to

increase the gender diversity of our faculty. Mallory Peck is a second year student in the School of Health Sciences majoring in General Health Sciences and hoping to become a dentist. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University senior Rickey Pinkney and sophomore Mallory Peck headlined the Boilermakers' indoor track and field All-Big Ten selections as the pair earned first-team all-conference honors for their respective victories in the men's 60-meter hurdles and women's pole vault at last weekend's championship meet. Also taking home conference honors were senior captains John Porter and Laura Farley and sophomore Ben Harpenau. Peck joins the all-conference squad for the first time in her young career, topping the pole vault and setting a conference meet record with a height of 4.11 meters (13-05.75). Her personal-record setting vault broke the previous meet record, held by former Boilermaker Ebbie Metzinger, by 0.11 meters.

Chris Kutanovski, a Spring Graduate in the School of Health Sciences, received the Balfour Award for the state of Indiana. This is one of the highest honors awarded to undergraduates each year, created in 1929 through the generosity of L.G. Our students have a strong sense of the need for community service and give of themselves to a wide variety of experiences that benefit the Greater Lafayette Community. From Big Brothers and Big Sisters to playing board games with residents of the Indiana Veteran’s Home, we, the Purdue community, have developed a wonderful dependence on these caring students. That sense, of community, is not one that has been developed since their Purdue careers began, but comes from loving families that have nurtured them and guided them into understanding that not only should they volunteer but volunteering is the most appropriate manner to express their gratitude for the gifts that life has given them. These students know the secret to the real meaning of life and we are forever grateful to those of you who have given us the pleasure of their company. We are a better community for their contributions. Thanks Mom, Dad, Grandpas, and Grandmas.

It is not often that we take the opportunity to thank the parents of our students for sending us such wonderful kids. As long-time Purdue advocates, it is very apparent to our advising

staff that the graduates from the School of Health Sciences represent the finest young women and men that cross the stage at each year’s graduation ceremonies. It is a wonderful experience to speak with parents of potential Purdue students about the opportunities that our students provide for one another. Health Sciences students freely volunteer their time to tutor one another at no charge. Our student council provides study groups for any subject that requires their assistance. But, as in life, more than those activities are the little things that count. We are ever so pleased at the sense of community that our students provide for one another. Even though they compete with one another for the difficult to obtain “A’s” that are necessary for survival, they insist on helping each other even if it means making the competition tougher for higher grades.

Interest in the forensics courses continues to show a large fall enrollment of over 450 students in the Introductory course and then the spring course 180 plus 5 laboratory sections of 30-32 each and is at capacity. An interesting situation arises each fall as there are very few truly large lecture facilities that can accommodate such as large class. And, since we do rely upon some outside expert speakers we ask for the class late in the day and treat the speaker(s) to a

nice evening meal and discussion that involves some students. The interest in internships is very high among the students and we continue to place students across Indiana and into their county, state or municipal agencies from their home state and city. The success of the forensics minor continues to express itself through collaboration with various agencies that include FEMA, CERT, ATF, FBI, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indianapolis Bomb Squad, the Indiana National Guard and the Indiana Search and Rescue Squads. After a year of exploration the School of Health Sciences finally received a donation of a Fokker F-27 from FedEx as a teaching laboratory for various situations including chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. This provides faculty such as Dr. Rob Stewart with a valuable teaching tool that was previously unavailable. Cul-mination of the donation of the aircraft took place on December 20 as it was flown into Camp Atterbury, a se-cure military training facility near Seymor, Indiana. Colonel Richmand, the base commander, has already be-gun planning for various training scenarios using the airframe including SEALS, ATF, Indiana Search and Rescue, chemical-biological-nuclear detection teams, and the IDHS. Upon receiving the aircraft from FedEx it was then transferred to IDHS which allows for greater flexibility of training schedules, liability and security. Thanks to Carolyn Gery and George Sandison for their valuable support in making this happen. And HLS continues to collaborate with other departments on forensics related courses and training including development of an independent based class that will be available by this coming fall. Question of the day: From a victims stab wound a pathologists or medical examiner could look at the incised wound and be able to tell the size of the blade or knife used—True of False? False: a stab wound has a longer depth dimension than width and while a wound 4 inches deep and 1 1/8 inches wide on the surface could have been produced by a knife of similar dimensions it could also have been produced by a different sized knife withdrawn at a different angle. And for you CSI fans, it is impossible to pour a rubber based compound into a wound a get a representation of the knife itself.

David Tate, Academic Advisor,

Director of Clinical and Continuing Education

FORENSICS UPDATE

Here is what the aircraft should look like. This is the sister ship. N722FE is the one that we will be receiving.

Industrial Hygiene Celebrates 25th Anniversary!

What does the Liberty Bell, Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, Benjamin Franklin and Purdue have in common? Well, if there had been an IH program in those days Dr. Z and Dr. McGlothlin and Dr. Rosenthal would have been monitoring the respiratory effects of the foundry where the Liberty Bell was cast, certainly overseeing any repetitive motion injuries from slapping those sandwiches together and making sure no one was electrocuted by Ol’ Ben’s flying kites. To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the formation of the Industrial Hygiene program (now we call it Occupational Health), we will be gathering in Philadelphia on June 4-6 at the American Industrial Hygiene Association annual convention. You are cordially invited to come celebrate with us at our Purdue Alumni Reception on June 5th, from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm at the Philadelphia Marriot. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. There will be door prizes and drawings for Purdue memorabilia. Please RSVP to [email protected] with your name, graduation year, how many guests you are bringing and email address you wish to use for correspondence. We also invite any IH alumnus to volunteer with our IH display at the convention running from June 5-7. This has become a tradition for our valued IH alums to represent our program and serve as Ambassadors for Purdue and IH. To volunteer, please email Dr. Z at [email protected].

Tracey Simmerman has left the School of Health Sciences to join the School of Agriculture. She has been in Health Sciences for 29 years and will be greatly missed. Please join us in wishing Tracey success in her new endeavors.

Best Wishes Tracey Simmerman

Dr. Frank Rosenthal received a Fellow Award

Purdue Industrial Hygiene Student Association Club News PIHSA Brings it Home! By April Rademaker, PIHSA President Despite a slow start to the academic year, the Purdue Industrial Hygiene Student Association (PIHSA) has really taken off during the spring term. In January, upon his return from his Italian sabbatical, Dr. Neil Zimmerman presented his research, a photo travelogue, and an entertaining interpretation of the Italian language at the monthly PIHSA meeting. February continued with our best participation ever in the Chicago Local AIHA Section Student Night on Thursday, February 22. In two vans, 15 students, three professors, and six posters for competition, set out to represent Purdue University at the meeting dedicated to students. It was a clean sweep as Purdue students took first and second places in both the graduate and undergraduate poster contests. Winning posters presented research on infrared video assessment of occupational exposure to nitrous oxide (April Rademaker, 1st place graduate), real-time detection of avian flu (Lindsey Kneten, 2nd place graduate), silica exposure assessment (Beauregard Middaugh, 1st place undergraduate), and campus residence hall ergonomic assessment (Jillian Jweinat, 2nd place undergraduate). In addition to the pride of victory, winners also took home cash prizes! This was also an opportunity for

students to network with practicing professionals and to learn of several exciting internship and job opportunities. March also had an exciting start. Lauren Spicer, PIHSA Vice-President, represented Purdue at the annual Leadership Workshop, sponsored by the American Industrial Hygiene Association, at their headquarters in Falls Church, VA the first weekend of March. The purpose of the annual Leadership Workshop is to bring together Vice-Presidents and President-Elects of AIHA’s 75 Local Sections as well as the Vice-Chairs and Chair-Elects of its technical committees in order to help them to be the most effective leaders for their groups’ volunteer efforts. This year, for the first time, leaders from AIHA’s Student Local Sections are also being invited to participate and 11 of the 32 Student Local Sections were represented. The addition of the student leaders is a welcomed addition that reflects the foresight of the AIHA Board of Directors (of which one of our own IH faculty members, Dr. Zimmerman, is an elected Director) in making the recruitment and involvement of students in the Industrial Hygiene profession as a top priority. The Leadership Workshop includes a variety of activities such as information sessions, small group discussions and informal networking to assist in maximizing the enthusiasm and effectiveness of volunteerism, thus maximizing the success of AIHA and the Industrial Hygiene profession.

PIHSA will round out the year with a panel discussion of local industrial hygienists in March, a year-end picnic and elections in April, and the AIHce National Meeting in Philadelphia during the first week in June. Each year, donations from the Indiana and Chicago local AIHA sections enable PIHSA to sponsor student attendance at this professional conference. Here students have the opportunity to learn about current issues in the industrial hygiene profession, to actively participate in volunteer committees, network with other professionals, and present their research during the Student Poster session. This year’s AIHce is particularly significant as we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Purdue’s industrial hygiene program during our annual Purdue reception at the conference. The AIHce is an event you DO NOT want to miss! Students, remember that only dues-paid members of PIHSA are eligible to request financial support to attend the meeting. For more information regarding PIHSA, please contact April Rademaker, President ([email protected]), Lauren Spicer, Vice-President ([email protected]), or Neil Zimmerman, PIHSA Faculty Advisor ([email protected]).

Announcements

Summer Internships in Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Health One of the most important ways to learn about your major field of study is to get some type of work experience. A good way to do this is with a summer internship. Not only does this give you a chance to gain valuable practical experience, apply what you have learned in class, not to mention, earn some cash, but it also “looks good on the resume”. This year, similarly to last year, there have been an unbelievable number of positions, with more still coming in! If you’d like more information, see or contact Dr. Z ([email protected]), plus keep your eyes and ears open for job announcements on the listserve and do some of your own job searching as well.

Timmy Foundation: Building Healthy Futures By Henry Chou The Purdue Timmy Foundation Club is returning to Ecuador this spring break for a medical service trip. We are taking 21 students and 10 professionals to administer medical care in rural Quito, Ecuador. Participants will also engage in cultural activities during the week. As part of our club’s efforts to bridge healthcare disparities and raise global health awareness, we have worked hard this year to secure thousands of dollars worth of medicine, medical supplies, and financial donations. For more information, please visit us online at http://purdue.edu/timmy.

For All Alums In a continuing effort to serve our current students better, we are looking for alums that are willing to come to campus and share your work experiences with our students. A part of our strategic plan is to assist our students in making career decisions and we hope that some of you will be willing to help us accomplish a part of the plan. While we do not wish to slight anyone, we are particularly interested in those of you who have graduated from our Radiological Health (Health Physics) program and our Occupational Health (Industrial Hygiene) program who might give a 30 minute presentation to a group of our students. We will try and arrange a time that works with your schedules and will be pleased to take care of all of the arrangements for your trip to campus. The intent is to schedule the visits for the 2007-2008 school year. If you are interested or might be interested would you please contact: Bob Walkup,

Head of Student Services, [email protected], 765-494-8102.

Champs Sports Bowl Game Highlights

Orlando, Florida * Friday, December 29, 2006 * Purdue 7 – Maryland

Living about 40 miles on Florida’s Space Coast has its advantages when Purdue is invited to a bowl game in Florida. Our entire family always tries to get together for any bowl game in Florida as our whole family graduated from Purdue, including our mom and dad meeting there in the 60’s. We had 12 of us this year join in the festivities. It is great fun to attend the Purdue scheduled social events and support the boilermakers on the football field. With our family trips back to campus, routine contact with my professors and advisors, the Health Science newsletter, Purdue websites, and receiving information from the Purdue Alumni Council I have really appreciated staying connected with Purdue over

the years and look forward for opportunities to give back as the future progresses. All of our kids get excited and enjoy getting all the whistles, noise sticks, poms poms etc. and making noise during the pep session and during tailgating activities. My oldest Son Drew has attended about 2 football games a year since he was 4 when, he attended his first game, the Outback Bowl on January 1st 2000. All pictures are from the pre game rally at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, FL on 12/28/2006
