Introduction 2019 Highlights

I am so incredibly proud of Year 12 2019.

I am proud of their outstanding performance in this year’s Higher School Certificate.

However, so much more than that, I am proud of their effort, determination and ability to persevere through times of trial. I am proud of the way they celebrate the success of each other, raising each other up. I am so exceedingly proud of who they are.

The 2019 HSC results reflect outstanding achievement by graduates across all subject areas. We celebrate the excellent results and the effort of every student who has tried her very best.

At Roseville College we will always prioritise the learning of each girl with an education that will serve her for life. While the Sydney Morning Herald HSC ranking does not acknowledge the degree of difficulty of each course, the ATAR calculation does. In recent years, student numbers in challenging courses and extension classes have increased, resulting in some of the highest ATAR results achieved in the College.

To our Class of 2019, I commend you. You are remarkable young women, entrusted with great ability, tenacity, purpose and hope. My hope is that you continue to care for each other and make the most of every moment with which you are blessed.

To parents and families of our Class of 2019, you have shown unwavering support throughout the year. It is our prayer that your daughter’s time at Roseville College lays a firm foundation on which she continues to live, to learn and to serve.

It has been said that “good teachers possess a capacity for connectedness”. Roseville College teachers do. I extend my thanks to each one for sharing their love of learning, their knowledge, skills and expertise. Moreover, I thank them for knowing each girl and for caring for each one.

Congratulations Class of 2019. We could not be prouder.

Warm regards,

Ms Deb Magill, Principal

College Dux

Nicole Cho

It is a pleasure to announce Nicole as College Dux in 2019.

Inspired by her Service and Learning Trip (SaLT) experience, which made her aware of health inequities in developing countries, Nicole is aiming for a career in medicine, specialising in surgery. She hopes to continue travelling to gain new perspectives of the world and life.

“Travelling [SaLT] reframed the world in a way I’d never seen it before and pushed me into choosing medicine as my first choice for university.”

“At Roseville College, I learnt that I am more than a number – I am a person who works hard, but no number defines who I am. I have learnt so much more here than just academic achievement.” The following graduates achieved 90 or

higher, Band 6 or Band E4, in at least ten units of study.

Caitlin baksa

Lucy Feyen

Olivia Lane

Jessica Wicks

College Captain

Helena Dadd

Helena intends to enjoy a gap year of travel before pursuing her goal to study engineering, which links her passions for science and problem-solving with her love for people and the environment.

On behalf of Year 12, Helena thanks their network of family and friends for their “support and endless love, and for putting up with the worst of us.”

“Congratulations! I couldn’t be more proud and thankful at the same time. You are all so incredible and should be proud of the people you have become and the lives you have touched. (If I was in charge of ATARs you would each get a 99.95 because compared to the state you are some pretty top percentile people.)

“There is so much more to you and your success than your ability to perform in an exam. If there was the possibility to rank Roseville girls for their compassion, generosity and integrity, each and every one of you would, without a doubt, rank in the top 1%. I am so excited to hear about all the amazing things you do.”

All Round Achievers

HSC Dux

Jessica Wicks

It is a pleasure to announce Jessica as HSC Dux in 2019, with an ATAR of 99.55.

Jessica, a Year 12 Prefect and also a Premier’s All Round Achiever, aims to study either biomedical engineering or medicine in 2020, and says her goal is to make a positive difference in the world and in the lives of others.

Captain 2014 Lauren Mackay

As Valedictory speaker for the Graduating Class of 2019, Lauren says it’s more important to focus more on who you are and how you do things, rather than what you do.

Lauren admits that life stays busy long after completing her HSC: after a gap year in Europe and the US, Lauren moved to the ACT in 2016 to complete a double degree in International Relations and Arts, majoring in Criminology, which she completes in 2019.

“I look back at my time at Roseville with happy memories. I personally had a really good experience thanks to both teachers and fellow students. My teachers taught me how to work hard and strive for good results, but more importantly, they were examples of how to be kind and supportive people, always going the extra mile for their students and having a personal approach to teaching. School was never just about academics.

“In a nutshell: work hard and be kind to each other. These never go out of date.”

She encourages Roseville girls to “make the most of your time at School – there are so many wonderful opportunities on offer! Be kind to and support each other. Notice and appreciate the work your teachers put in, study hard, and keep a balance in your life. You will be fine! There is so much waiting for you once you finish school – so enjoy it while it lasts!”

Dux 2014 Olivia Arkell

As co-Dux, Olivia Arkell admits that a 7- month world holiday was a necessary distraction after the HSC – she simply couldn’t decide what she wanted to do next.

“I didn’t know which direction my purpose was going in – what did I really want to do?”

After travelling, Olivia returned with clarity to study a combined Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Law at University of Sydney, graduating from her Arts degree in 2018. While she completes the law degree, she runs the university’s Sustainability Society and works as a paralegal.

“I genuinely want to do something helpful in the world – not just to talk about it, but get on with it! I want my life to be useful and meaningful, and law is a great foundation,” she says. With a heart for people and a sustainable, peaceful future, Olivia is “optimistic about the future, but also concerned that courage and kindness appear lacking in the world at the moment”.

“My time at Roseville was super positive – the College gave me space to be a well-rounded human, who can balance working hard with living life well together. We were encouraged and equipped to make a difference where we saw a need,” reflects Olivia, who counts herself lucky to call herself a Roseville Alumni.

“At Roseville, I had people around me who understood the importance of learning and who made sure each student had space and opportunity to learn in their own way,” she says.
