H.S.A. Big Fish Tournament Heating Up

The entries are beginning to come in. So far we have trout, large

mouth bass, and small mouth bass. We are still waiting to see

the first striped bass and bluefish entries. To enter just send us a

photo of the fish. Include the length of the fish, where it was

caught, method, and date of the catch. First, second and third

place entries receive gold, silver, and bronze fish pin awards. In

addition the first place winner of each category has their names

engraved on the Big Fish Tournament plaque on display in the

trophy cabinet at the clubhouse. All entries are posted on the

clubhouse bulletin board.

BBQ Preparation Work Party

Saturday September 12

Ray Lockard has announced a work party to prepare the building

and grounds for the big Sportsmen’s BBQ coming up on Sunday

September 13th.. The party is scheduled for Saturday September

12th the day before the BBQ. The work will get underway at

9:00AM. Tasks will be cleaning up the clubhouse restrooms,

kitchen, and hall. Also, preparing the grounds as required. Set-

ting up for the BBQ (serving stations, tables, chairs, grill, etc.).

If there is interest we may want to clean up the horse shoe pits,

and move the swinging turkey shoot game to a new location. As

always the more hands helping out, the smoother things go. Put

the work party and the BBQ on your calendars, and we will see

you there.

The Bullet Page 3

Rain, Snow, Sleet or Wind will not keep the Retrievers

from their appointed training grounds! You have heard

something like that before but this time it is the Gun

Dogs owned by members Bill and Debby Hussey, Joe

Creedon and Ron Ober. The home base for these mem-

bers are the HSA fields at the club. The HSA fields are

utilized by these members for the Sport of Retriever

Training in keeping with the spirit, purpose and hunting

affiliation of our Sportsman's Association. You will find

these teams training for the Fall and Winter bird season

and for the off-season sport that both owners and their

Field Labrador Retrievers compete in. Dandy ( owned

by Ron) Remington and Ruger (owned by Joe) and Mar-

ley and Sal (owned by Bill and Debby) all compete

against "The Rule Books" published by either the AKC

or the HRC (Hunting Retriever Club..a division of the

UKC). The "books" are the rules of the national parent

organizations and are enforced by the licensed judges at

each of the Hunt Tests (Trials) which are scheduled

throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Winterwood Train-

ing Group usually enters tests in the northeast under

sanctioned clubs in Maine, Connecticut, New Hamp-

shire, Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania

and occasionally Massachusetts (that is another

story..you probably could guess!!) In addition, Ron and

the group puts on Retriever demonstrations at a number

of venues in the area (including HSA in the past). A wa-

ter Retriever demo is scheduled for August 1st at Bass

Pro (Foxboro) at 2:00. It is Bass Pro's dedication/open

house for their new nature trails. Also scheduled is a

land demo at Bass Pro on August 22 and 23 at 1-2pm.

There is another demo scheduled for September 13 from 11-12 and 1-2 at the Wallum Lake Rod and Gun Club

in Burrillville, RI. (near Uxbridge, Ma). This demo is part of their annual field day where every imaginable

shooting sport including Archery and yes -even dogs can be seen and tried . Rem, Dandy, Ruger, Marley and

Sal have all earned AKC and HRC Retriever Titles or Legs (part way to a title) at various levels of accom-

plishments such as Started, Junior, Senior, Seasoned, Finished and Master. Each dog and handler must work

as a team and be as proficient in the water as they are on land. The rules call for each dog to be able to mark

birds as they fly and and are shot. The rules also call for the handler to direct their dog to a downed bird where

only the handler knows (maybe?) where the bird actually is. This is called a blind retrieve. Dogs must retrieve

to hand, be cooperative and courageous in the field as well as in the water and perform with perseverance and

a good attitude and bring the bird back to the hunter "fit for the table"!!- The purpose of hunt test training is for

the dog and owner team to develop the skills needed to have an enjoyable and productive day of hunting with

skilled and obedient dogs trained to the whistle, the voice and the e-collar (when used skillfully and humanely

as taught, is the best training tool in existence-bar none). It is a fun and yet a serious game for both owners and

dogs alike. Ron obedience trains all breeds of dogs privately and specializes in Sporting Dogs which include

Retrievers and the other Flushers and Pointers. He will be happy to talk dogs and the Sporting Breeds with you

and invites you to watch a training session at the club. (Editor’s note: Ron is also treasurer of the H.S.A.).
