Cross-cultural
management
Dr Marja Flory
Culture-specific questions facing
global managers
1 How can we understand cultural differences (eg beliefs
values norms) and their impact on social systems in ways
that can help managers succeed
2 Is there a shorthand to understanding these cultural
differences and if so what are potential limitations of this
approach
3 How can we understand the complexities and contradictions
that permeate national and regional cultures
4 What is the relationship between cultural differences and
national institutions (eg legal systems government policies)
that can constrain or shape global and local business
What is culture Common threads
Taken together these definitions suggest that from the
standpoint of global management culture is perhaps best
thought of as addressing three questions
bullWho are we
bullHow do we live
bull And how do we approach work
These three questions focus attention on individuals
environments and work norms and values and the answers to
these questions allow us to draw some inferential conclusions
about work and society and how managers in general should
behave as they work across cultures

Cross-cultural
management
Dr Marja Flory
Culture-specific questions facing
global managers
1 How can we understand cultural differences (eg beliefs
values norms) and their impact on social systems in ways
that can help managers succeed
2 Is there a shorthand to understanding these cultural
differences and if so what are potential limitations of this
approach
3 How can we understand the complexities and contradictions
that permeate national and regional cultures
4 What is the relationship between cultural differences and
national institutions (eg legal systems government policies)
that can constrain or shape global and local business
What is culture Common threads
Taken together these definitions suggest that from the
standpoint of global management culture is perhaps best
thought of as addressing three questions
bullWho are we
bullHow do we live
bull And how do we approach work
These three questions focus attention on individuals
environments and work norms and values and the answers to
these questions allow us to draw some inferential conclusions
about work and society and how managers in general should
behave as they work across cultures

Cross-cultural
management
Dr Marja Flory
Culture-specific questions facing
global managers
1 How can we understand cultural differences (eg beliefs
values norms) and their impact on social systems in ways
that can help managers succeed
2 Is there a shorthand to understanding these cultural
differences and if so what are potential limitations of this
approach
3 How can we understand the complexities and contradictions
that permeate national and regional cultures
4 What is the relationship between cultural differences and
national institutions (eg legal systems government policies)
that can constrain or shape global and local business
What is culture Common threads
Taken together these definitions suggest that from the
standpoint of global management culture is perhaps best
thought of as addressing three questions
bullWho are we
bullHow do we live
bull And how do we approach work
These three questions focus attention on individuals
environments and work norms and values and the answers to
these questions allow us to draw some inferential conclusions
about work and society and how managers in general should
behave as they work across cultures

What is culture Common threads
Taken together these definitions suggest that from the
standpoint of global management culture is perhaps best
thought of as addressing three questions
bullWho are we
bullHow do we live
bull And how do we approach work
These three questions focus attention on individuals
environments and work norms and values and the answers to
these questions allow us to draw some inferential conclusions
about work and society and how managers in general should
behave as they work across cultures
30 Chapter 3 ndash Cultural environment p 75
