April 21, 2016 A safe and healthy workplace begins with good house-
keeping using Toyota’s 5S philosophy, which was developed after
WWII. Poor housekeeping can lead to hidden hazards which will trig-
ger accidents, especially Slips, Trips and Falls (STFs).
The Liberty Mutual Insurance Company stated that STFs are the 2nd leading cause of
occupational injuries, coming in at 27.6%. Most of the hazards have a human being
who is responsible but bad judgment factors also include using improper footwear,
taking shortcuts, and rushing to finish the task at hand. Focusing on STFs, here are a
few hazards to look for, which can result in an accident:
Wet, greasy or slippery walking surfaces, especially around industrial machines. Damaged flooring. Unanchored rugs. Unsafe floor products. Walkways which vary in elevation or have steps. Electrical cords and cables. New machinery to work area which changes the walking routes. Weather hazards from rain, snow, or ice. Damaged or improper use of ladders. Inadequate lighting. Change of surface from one type to another. Ramps or uneven stairs. Preventing STFs requires more training for supervisors and workers and consistent
monitoring of workplace conditions. The simplest and cleanest solution to STFs is
always the best one and a good 5S housekeeping program begins with these five
Japanese management techniques:
1. Seiri (Sort): Eliminating anything unnecessary for your equipment or machinery to
work correctly.
2. Seiton (Straightening): Organize, so you know where everything you need for your
workspace is located. A place for everything and everything in its place.
3. Seiso (Shining): Clean everything until it shines. A clean space motivates and leads
to better quality control for the company.
4. Seiketsu (Standardizing): Writing down your 5S program so everyone is on the
same page. Solidifies the lean manufacturing techniques developed so everyone
knows the norm.

May 18, 2016 Essential StaffCare’s
developer, IAG (Insurance Applications
Group) has been recognized as the 2nd
fastest growing, large group US insurance
brokerage as reported by the Employee
Benefit Advisor. IAG has seen growth at an
extraordinary rate of 44.56%. IAG offers
health plans to four different industries:
Essential StaffCare, Hospitality Care, Medical StaffCare, and
Health Wrap.
With the onset of the Affordable Care Act, staffing companies
have been flocking to IAG’s Essential StaffCare (ESC) health
plans. HR Associates came on-board with ESC in 2012 with an
Indemnity Health Plan to cover basic services and later with an
ACA compliant Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) Plan.
HR Associates has consistently averaged 10-15% participation
of working associates in these plans.
Data Supports Need For Higher Wages
(B) There are 41.2 million Americans (nearly 30% of the workforce) who receive public
assistance… and nearly half of these workers (19.3 million) have full-time jobs.
HR’s Health Plan Provider Gets Noticed
(A) In January, 14% of Ohio’s population (1,627,479 residents) received
assistance through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (SNAP) . January’s coupons issued in Ohio totaled
$200,988,977 or an average of $123.50 per SNAP recipient. (Source: ODJFS)

New “Overtime Pay” Law
May 25, 2016 The U.S. Department of Labor
announced a major change to the overtime pay
law. The new law greatly increases the number of
people who qualify for time-and-a-half pay for
hours worked beyond 40 in a week. Almost all
hourly employees, regardless of their wage, are
already entitled to overtime pay but the new rule
widens the coverage.
The old law’s overtime guarantee was for people
making up to $455 per week, the new standard
will be $913 per week or $47,476 per year. In
Ohio, 351,000 new workers will be protected by
the new overtime rule, nearly 21% of Ohio’s
workforce.
Barring an expected court challenge, the new law
will go into effect on December 1st.

Mareena, Megan, & MJ @ the Home Office
2016 Ohio Safety Congress Marketplace @ the Columbus Convention Center
Around The Water Cooler May 31, 2016 Office Manager, Michelle Horner (MJ), shared a few
family tidbits, like little Dominic talking non-stop in complete
sentences. Michelle’s husband, TJ, a gun enthusiast, recently added a
Beretta shotgun to his collection. TJ spends every Monday night at
the Piqua Fish & Game target shooting. The Fish & Game has 5
shooting ranges with over 30 stations. MJ and Dominic have joined TJ
@ target practice on a few occasions.
Michelle said it continues to be a challenge to find dependable workers who will
remain on assignment. MJ attended the HR Council meeting and she mentioned a
couple of local steel companies were having the same problem with turnover with
employees going on their break and not returning.
Recruiter/Receptionist, Megan Byram, moved into a new apartment in Troy. She is
excited to scope out the local digs with her boyfriend, Mark M. Megan is back, full
time with HR , at least until Edison starts up in the fall. She is not looking forward to 6
credit hours of Math in one semester. Until the leaves change, she will be taking great
care of anyone who graces our doors
Recruiter, Mareena Emrick received the third degree for her new mom disorder,
spoiling her 2 year old son, Easton, on his birthday. We have received a verbal
promise that she will not buy the toddler 25 gifts for his 3rd birthday. Asked how many
were still in use? … one, a Missile Launching Airplane. We educated Mareena on the
dangerous precedent and that there was still time to salvage the debacle.
We asked Mareena what she likes most of her new Recruiter position? She said she
enjoys the up-close-and-personal communication with applicants. Dislikes? The
frustration of putting all of our effort into finding a job for some people & they just
walk off the job, no notice and no call. On a related note, a HR client had 26 new
employee starts on a Monday in May & within 4 days, they had 11 remaining. Please
reference the “Brief” on page three again, for an explanation.
From The President’s Desk May 24, 2016 President, Heather Risner mentioned a website update in progress with the addition of the Tipp location
and a few other changes to the Contact Us page. A new About Us page is in the works too. The Tipp office is humming
right along and seems to be the go-to office for Troy candidates.
Heather mentioned summer job orders were up considerably and HR even has a few short term Contract assignments.
She said these Contract jobs were easier to fill with working candidates applying so they can pick up some extra hours.
At home with Heather’s boys:
Oldest son, “C”, will be on to his Senior year at Wright State this fall and is working full time for his Beavercreek
church in a youth ministry capacity, this summer.
The Wright State middle son is home for the summer working for Hartzel Air in Piqua. “D” seems to be on target still
for his Mechanical Engineering aspiration. After being away for 9 months, house rules have been reintroduced.
Mr. “N” will be a Junior @ Covington H.S. and is working part-time for Harmony Systems for some spending money
this summer. Heather’s youngest finally hit a growth spurt and no longer feels like the shortest guy in his class and
has even went around his dad.
