REVIEW QUESTIONS:

Unit # 2: Hydraulic Actuators and Motors:

1. Define rotary actuator. Differentiate between a hydraulic pump and a hydraulic motor. List the advantages of a hydraulic motor over an electric motor. What are the different types of rotary actuators motor? List four important applications of hydraulic motor.

2. With neat sketches explain the following hydraulic motors.a) External gear motor and internal gear motor b) Balanced and unbalanced vane motorsc) Piston motors (bent axis type, swash plate design and radial design piston motors)

3. Explain briefly the following performance parameters for gear motor, vane motor and piston motor. a). Theoretical torque, power and flow rate b). Efficiencies

4. Simple problem from performance parameters of hydraulic motors.

Unit # 3: Control Components in Hydraulic Systems:

1. What is meant by control device? Name the different types of control valves used in hydraulic systems. State their functions.

2. What is pressure control valve (PCV)? Explain clearly the terms "Cracking pressure" and "Full - flow pressure"

3. With neat sketch explain the following PCVs & draw hydraulic symbols. i). Pressure relief valve (PRV) & pilot operated pressure relief valve.ii). Unloading valve, sequence valves and counterbalance valve

iii). Pressure reducing valve4. What is direction control valve (DCV)? With neat sketches explain the following direction

control valves & with hydraulic symbol, name three ways in which directional control valves may be actuated.

i). Check valve and pilot operated check valve. ii). Three way valves, four way valves and solenoid actuated valves.

iii). 3/2 manual operated spring return DCV.iv). 4/3 manual operated spring centered DCV.v). 4/3 solenoid operated tandem design DCV.

5. What are the functions of flow control valves? Explain with a sketch (i) Needle valve (ii). Pressure compensated FCV, (iii). Pressure-Temperature compensated FCV

Course Outcomes(CO): Students will be able to;CO Description1 Describe the type of fluids, usefulness of fluid power and use of mathematical

principles in a wide range of problems2 Understand the construction, operation and maintenance of different components in

hydraulic and pneumatic systems3 Gain the basic knowledge about the symbols of hydraulic and pneumatic components.

4 Analyze the operation of hydraulic and pneumatic circuits drawn using graphic symbols.

5 Design the circuits related to conventional basic processes in industrial applications.
