Flex Copy XP user guide 9

1 Flex Copy XP overviewHP StorageWorks Flex Copy XP creates point-in-time copies from an XP array to an external array and froman external array to an XP array.

If you copy data between the local array and an external array, you can, for example, gather data frommultiple arrays to one local array and compile the data. Then you can distribute the compiled data backto the original arrays.

You can also use Flex Copy XP to easily back up data in the local array to other arrays and restore thebacked up data to the local array.

NOTE: You cannot access an external LU mapped for Flex Copy XP operations from the host connected tothe local array. You can set the host I/O suppression mode (enabled only for Flex Copy XP operations ordisabled for other operations) when mapping an external LU as an internal LU. For more informationabout mapped volume attributes, see the HP StorageWorks External Storage XP user guide.

Flex Copy XP has the following features:

After mapping an external LU as an internal LU using External Storage XP, you can use Flex Copy XPto copy data from an external storage array (external LU) to the local array volume.

For instance, you can easily migrate data to the local array when removing the external array bycopying all data in the external LUs to the local array volumes.

After mapping an external LU as an internal LU using External Storage XP, you can use Flex Copy XPto create a copy of the local array volume in the mapped external LU.

You can make copies of data in the local array on the external LUs as if the copies were created on theinternal LUs.

Figure 1 shows the concept of copying data in external LUs to the local array volumes. In Figure 1,volume A in the external array is mapped as an internal LU in the local array. In addition, data involume A is copied to the local array volume using Flex Copy XP.

When setting LUSE volumes for Flex Copy XP pairs, note the following:

Copy source and copy destination volumes must be LUSE volumes.

The number of LDEVs forming the LUSE volumes must be the same forthe copy source and copy destination volumes.

LDEVs placed in the corresponding location in each LUSE volume musthave the same capacity.

    Maximum number of concurrent copypairs

12 Preparing for Flex Copy XP operations

Preparing for Flex Copy XP operationsFor Flex Copy XP operations, you can select the copy source and copy target volumes, set the copy pair, and execute copy operations for those copy pairs.

For an overview and conditions for copy operations using Flex Copy XP, see Requirements and overviewof copy operations on page 13.

    Uninstalling Flex Copy XP

To uninstall Flex Copy XP, you must cancel all Flex Copy XP pairs.1. Log on to Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console. For instructions, see the HP StorageWorks

Command View XP user guide for XP Disk Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Consoleuser guide for XP12000/XP10000/SVS200.

    2. Click the External Storage XP button ( ) in the Command View XP or XP Remote WebConsole main pane. External Storage XP starts.

    3. Cancel the Flex Copy XP pairs. For instructions, see Canceling copy pairs (Delete Pair) on page 44.

    4. Disable the Flex Copy XP option on Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console and on each FlexCopy XP array. For more information, see the HP StorageWorks Command View XP user guide for XPDisk Arrays or the HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console user guide forXP12000/XP10000/SVS200.

Notices on Flex Copy XP operations You can use only volumes of CU group 0 (whose CU:LDEV number is between 00:00 and 3F:FF) for

    Flex Copy XP operations.

Before performing Flex Copy XP operations, ensure that one or more normally functioningmicroprocessors for CU group 0 exist.

You cannot cancel all LU paths to a volume that is a member of a copy pair.

Do not update volumes being used or managed by Flex Copy XP. Do not update external LUs on theexternal array side.

If you use the mapped external LU for the copy source or copy destination volume of the Flex Copy XPpair, set the emulation type to OPEN-V when mapping the volume.

If you use the mapped external LU for the copy source or copy destination volume of the Flex Copy XPpair, set the IO Suppression mode to Enable when mapping the volume.

Flex Copy XP does not perform difference management. Therefore, Flex Copy XP copy processingalways copies all data in the copy source volume to the copy destination volume.

Flex Copy XP user guide 13

3 Requirements and overview of copy operationsYou can use Flex Copy XP to create a pair consisting of a copy source volume and a copy destinationvolume, so data is copied from the copy source volume to the copy destination volume.

The copy source volume is called the primary volume (P-VOL). The copy destination volume is called thesecondary volume (S-VOL).

When using Flex Copy XP to perform copy operations, all data in the copy source volume (P VOL) iscopied to the copy destination volume (S-VOL).

This chapter explains requirements for performing Flex Copy XP operations and gives an overview of copyoperations.

Requirements for volumes that can be used as copy pairsThis section explains requirements for volumes that can be set as the copy source volume (P VOL) and copydestination volume (S-VOL) for a Flex Copy XP pair. For instructions on adjusting the volume capacity to setthe volume as a P-VOL or S-VOL, see Adjusting volume capacity for copy pair settings on page 49.

Requirements for volumes that can be used as the P-VOL or X-VOL are:

You can use only volumes of CU group 0 (whose CU:LDEV number is between 00:00 and 3F:FF) for

Flex Copy XP operations. When specifying the P-VOL and S-VOL for a Flex Copy XP copy pair, you must specify a volume in the

local array and an external LU mapped to a volume in the local array.

For Flex Copy XP copy operations, you must set the IO Suppression mode to Enable when mapping theexternal LU.

The emulation type for the P-VOL and S-VOL must be OPEN-V. When mapping an external LU as aninternal LU, you must set the emulation type to OPEN-V.

The P-VOL and S-VOL must be offline from the host.

If you want to use the S-VOL for operations other than Flex Copy XP operations, you must cancel thecopy pair first.

The P-VOL and S-VOL must be in Normal status.

The P-VOLs capacity and the S-VOLs capacity must be the same. The volume capacity must be within arange of approximately 47 MB (96,000 blocks) to 2 TB (4,294,967,296 blocks).

The total capacity of the P-VOL and S-VOL must not exceed the capacity licensed for Flex Copy XP.

You cannot use volumes set for Continuous Access XP as copy pair volumes for Flex Copy XPoperations.

You cannot use volumes set for Business Copy XP as copy pair volumes for Flex Copy XP operations.

You cannot use volumes set for Auto LUN XP as copy pair volumes for Flex Copy XP operations.

You cannot use volumes set as reserve volumes for Auto LUN XP and Business Copy XP as copy pairvolumes for Flex Copy XP operations.

You cannot use volumes specified as Continuous Access XP Journal data or journal volumes as copy

pair volumes for Flex Copy XP operations. You cannot use volumes specified for Snapshot XP as volumes for copy pairs for Flex Copy XP

    operations.

You cannot use volumes specified as virtual volumes (V-VOLs) or pool volumes (pool-VOLs) as volumesfor copy pairs for Flex Copy XP operations.

You cannot use NAS system volumes as Flex Copy XP S-VOLs.

You cannot use volumes configured as command devices, which are reserved for use by hosts, as FlexCopy XP P-VOLs and S-VOLs.

14 Requirements and overview of copy operations

If a volume is already specified as the P-VOL or S-VOL for one Flex Copy XP copy pair, you cannotspecify that volume as the P-VOL or S-VOL of another Flex Copy XP copy pair (Figure 3).

Figure 3 Example of volumes that cannot be shared by Flex Copy XP pairs

The LUSE volume configuration for the P-VOL and S-VOL must be exactly the same. Map the external LU,which is used as a copy pair volume, as an internal LU, and then set the volume as a LUSE volume that

has the same configuration as the local array volume that will be a copy pair with the mappedexternal LU.

If you use LUN Security XP Extension to prevent a volume from being specified as an S-VOL, you cannotspecify the volume as a Flex Copy XP S-VOL.

If the VMA of LUN Security XP Extension is set for a volume, you cannot use the volume as a Flex CopyXP volume.

Overview of copy operationsAfter mapping an external LU as a local array volume using External Storage XP, you can use Flex CopyXP to create a copy pair consisting of a local array volume and the mapped external LU, and thenperform copy operations.

After mapping an external LU as a local array volume using External Storage XP, you can also use RAIDManager XP to perform copy operations on a copy pair consisting of an internal LU and external LUmapped by External Storage XP.

General cautions and notes about Flex Copy XP operationsThe following are cautions about Flex Copy XP copy operations:

When creating copy pairs, ensure that hosts do not access external LUs mapped as internal LUs.

If host access occurs during copy processing, backup data consistency cannot be guaranteed.HP recommends unmounting volumes mapped as internal LUs from hosts connecting to the externalarray, and ensure that volumes are used exclusively for Flex Copy XP.

After creating a copy pair with Flex Copy XP, hosts connecting to the local array cannot access the

internal LUs until you delete the copy pair with Flex Copy XP.The following are notes about Flex Copy XP copy operations:

Before creating a copy pair, all data in the host must be applied to the volume.

If a host uses middleware, such as volume manager, data in the copy destination volume (S-VOL) willnot match data in the host until data in the copy source volume (P-VOL) is exported from the host andapplied to the array.

When copying data from an external array to a local array, you must export data from volumemanager on the host connecting to the external array, and then apply it to the external array. Thenperform a copy operation using Flex Copy XP. After copy processing finishes, cancel the copy pair. Byimporting copied data from volume manager on the host connecting to the local array, you ensure thatdata in the external array can be used on the local array.

    15/54

Flex Copy XP user guide 15

If you perform copy operations concurrently on two or more pairs, ensure that the pairs are located inseparate parity groups (that is, separate RAID groups). If two or more Flex Copy XP pairs are locatedin the same parity group, host server I/O performance might decrease. HP recommends the followingremedies for reducing the risk of decreased I/O performance:

Reduce the number of pairs in the parity group on which you will perform simultaneous copyoperations. For example, to create multiple pairs in one parity group, you should create one pairafter the copy operation on another pair finishes.

Ensure that external array LUs mapped by External Storage XP are located in separate paritygroups.

Add cache memory, disk adapters boards (DKAs), and parity groups if the local array isoverloaded. Host I/O performance might decrease if you use Flex Copy XP when the array isoverloaded.

If the local arrays load increases, host server I/O performance (response) might be degraded. If FlexCopy XP performs copy operations when the arrays load is heavy, it is more likely that host serverI/O performance (response) will degrade. The Copy Threshold option temporarily stops Flex Copy XPcopy operations when the arrays load is heavy. If you enable this option, you can minimize host I/Operformance degradation by temporarily stopping Flex Copy XP copy operations when the arraysload is heavy.

For more information about the Copy Threshold option, contact your HP account supportrepresentative.

NOTE: Copy operations stopped by the Copy Threshold option resume when the arrays loaddecreases. If this option is enabled, copy operations for Flex Copy XP and for the followingproducts stop when the arrays load is heavy:

    Business Copy

    ShadowImage for z/OS

    Compatible Mirroring for IBM FlashCopy

Compatible Mirroring for IBM FlashCopy Version 2

    Snapshot XP

    Auto LUN XP

If you set an external array volume as a Flex Copy XP copy destination, the external arrays workloadincreases because of the inflow of copy data. This means that Flex Copy XP processing might influencehost I/O performance for the copy destination external array.

Table 3 shows an estimate of Flex Copy XPs copy speed. Review Table 3, consider the workload thatFlex Copy XP imposes on the external array, and then execute Flex Copy XP operations.

NOTE: Copy speed might be slower than shown in Table 3 because of external factors (forexample, external array performance, drive status, and host I/O).

Flex Copy XP enables up to 32 concurrent copy operations. If the number of copy requests exceeds 32,the 33rd and subsequent requests are not processed until a running copy operation finishes.

16 Requirements and overview of copy operations

If you perform Flex Copy XP copy operations concurrently with Business Copy XP or Auto LUN XP copyoperations, the performance of each of these copy operations degrades (that is, each of these copyoperations is slower).

Performance of a Flex Copy XP copy operation on a volume degrades if the parity group containingthis volume also contains a volume that a Business Copy XP or Auto LUN XP copy operation is using.

Figure 4 shows the configuration of two Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) nodes (combining MSCS andBackup) in a single node (Node 2). In this case, the MSCS on node 2 might incorrectly recognize theexternal LU as the volume under the MSCS on node 1. Therefore, you must change the external LUsvolume signature. However, Flex Copy XP does not support MSCS configurations, and the casedescribed in Figure 4 does not occur. This means that changing the external LUs signature is notrequired.

Figure 4 Configuration of two MSCS nodes in a single node

Cautions about Flex Copy XP copy pair volumesWhen starting Flex Copy XP copy pair operations and during copy processing, you must be careful

handling volumes related to Flex Copy XP operations. If volumes are not handled according to thesecautions, copy processing might fail because of, for example, an abnormal termination or defectivecopying of data.

The following sections describe cautions about volumes related to Flex Copy XP pair operations usingconfiguration pattern examples.

CAUTION: If you use the Create Paircommand, clickApply, and then select No Copy in the Copy TypeSetting pane, copy processing will not execute and the pair status becomes PAIR (NOCOPY) for Flex CopyXP or PAIR for RAID Manager XP. Therefore, data in the P-VOL will not match data in the S-VOL. For moreinformation about creating copy pairs, see Copying data in an external LU to a local array volume onpage 40 and Copying data in the local array volume to an external LU on page 41.

CAUTION: If you create a copy pair using the Create Paircommand and the No Copy option (the pairstatus becomes PAIR (NOCOPY) for Flex Copy XP or PAIR for RAID Manager XP), and then use RAIDManager XP to execute Pairsplit on that copy pair, copy processing will not execute at all and the pairstatus becomes PSUS. Therefore, data in the P-VOL will not match data in the S-VOL.

If you execute the raidscan command for volumes configuring the Flex Copy XP pair, and if paths forthese volumes are not set, the status of the P-VOL and S-VOL appears as SMPL. When using RAIDManager XP for the Flex Copy XP pair operation, you must set paths for the volumes.

When creating a pair using an external LU that is mapped as an internal LU, the local arrayautomatically decides whether to use Flex Copy XP or Business Copy XP depending on the mappedvolumes attributes. Since Flex Copy XP and Business Copy XP differ in the connection configuration forthe server and array, you must be careful with the attributes for the volume that creates the copy pair.

When creating a Flex Copy XP pair, a server connected to the external array can read from and writeto the external LU. However, if the server is also connected to the local array, the server cannot readfrom and write to the internal LU mapped to the external LU.
