Gain sustained high-quality service

Facing both the digital revolution and fierce competition, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) must differentiate themselves and look for new markets. They must also enable a great service experience expected by more and more demanding customers.

Even the most innovative and attractive service offerings will not generate new revenue without meeting the expected quality. CSPs will be able to take up this challenge and increase customer retention only if they put a solid foundation in place, that is, if they manage to ensure a sustained, high-quality customer service.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise can help CSPs gain a competitive edge to stand out in today’s crowded marketplace. We offer a comprehensive portfolio of market-leading Operations Support System (OSS) solutions for traditional, hybrid, and digital services.

New and innovative OSS Assurance solutions, in particular, are key for CSPs to provide outstanding service quality and reliability, faster problem resolution while meeting scalability needs as the number of customers and services grow. To be successful, CSPs must ensure optimal Efficiency across the entire network Operations.

The first Virtualized Management Function

Agility, robustness, and reliability beyond your dreamsIn the data/traffic plane, the industry is moving from Physical Network Function (PNF) to Virtual Network Function (VNF) and in the control plane, the industry is moving from Proprietary Control Plane (PCP) to Software-Defined Networks (SDN).

The industry is expecting the same transformation and optimization in the management plane: move from Physical Management Function (PMF) to Virtualized Management Function (VMF) allows to be more agile and more efficient.

HPE vTeMIP is cloud enabled and offers you a Virtualized Management Function (VMF). HPE vTeMIP is intrinsically designed to manage any hardware failure but the full value of a VMF is reached when it is deployed in a (private) cloud environment.

With HPE vTeMIP deployed in your private cloud, you get ultimate agility, robustness, and reliability at a significant lower Hardware cost.

HPE vTeMIP is agile—The Fault Management solution setup can be changed “on the fly” according to external parameters by scaling it in or out. Scaling in/out the solution doesn’t generate any loss of service: static predefined load balancing rules drive the new setup configuration.

HPE vTeMIP is robust and reliable—It is a solution resistant to VM Hardware failure. Virtual Networks allow to move underlying support host across the cloud, the vTeMIP solution offers:

• Extreme Availability

• Extreme Resiliency

• Near Disaster Tolerance and site Disaster Recovery if necessary

Figure 3. vTeMIP is cloud enabled

Cloud-enabled fault manager for growing CSPs

vTeMIP’s architecture easily allows Fault Management of huge networks split across multi-country/regions, by technologies, by operations, and so on. The vTeMIP architecture offers unlimited scalability.A vTeMIP solution is a set of distributed and collaborative vTeMIP Directors.A vTeMIP Director is itself a set of distributed vHosts (A vHost is a VM running vTeMIP Framework Software.).By cloning the referenced vHost, the solution can be expanded dynamically with extra VMs.Operators are not impacted by the solution setup changes if any.vTeMIP offers two growth dimensions:1) Addition of Director(s)2) Addition of vHost(s) to Director(s) also called scale-outThis helps you cope with the network growth, eases deployment of new technologies, and react to any change.

Intrinsically designed to accept HW failure vTeMIP is VM HW failure resistant. In case of vHost failure, service will be immediately restored on another vHost of the Director. There is no loss of service. vTeMIP Framework decisions will rely on static predefined load balancing rules.Impact is more load on the other vHosts until the new VM is operational: local High Availability is offered through the management of virtualization hypervisors.

Site Disaster Recovery Site Disaster Recovery process and duration depend on the connections quality and performances in terms of latency/bandwidth between the remote data centers located in different geographies:• If connections between the data centers and performance in terms of latency/bandwidth are

excellent, vTeMIP Director(s) vHosts are configured across the two data centers configured as a virtualized data center. Local and remote (hot) failover are possible without loss of service.

• If connections between the data centers are excellent but performance in terms of latency/bandwidth is weak, vTeMIP Director(s) vHosts are configured in a single data center. Site Disaster Recovery time will be very short, the entire vTeMIP Director(s) can be restarted in the remote data center and use the replicated data, thanks to the distributed, redundant, Distributed File Systems Software-Defined Storage (DFS/SDS).

• If there is no acceptable connection between the data centers, recovery will rely on vTeMIP remote data replication services.

OSS monitoring and HW resources optimization

The OSS Cloud Manager (OCM) is an independent virtualized OSS application manager responsible for retrieving vTeMIP KPIs and associated quantitative virtualized infrastructure measures like CPU, memory, disk space. It persists the collected measures and calculated metrics. It is coupled with a GUI through the UOC. It supports the definition of KPI thresholds. Threshold Crossing Alarms (TCAs) can be collected in any application manager including vTeMIP. UCA is an optional add-on that can take action driven by the actionable insight generated by the TCAs, include TeMIP application-specific troubleshooting and remediation smarts learned by TeMIP support engineers over years, trigger an OpenStack® orchestrator to take actions like scale-in or scale-out.

Page 5Data sheet

Key featuresThis table explains some key features of HPE vTeMIP and how they enable you to manage your Telecom networks with confidence, today and tomorrow.

Sophisticated Alarm Management Services • The HPE vTeMIP Alarm Handling services offer alarms collection (output from vTeMIP Mediation services), high-level filtering, sorting, storage, aggregation, grouping, clearance, deletion, resynchronization with EMS, exporting to Big Data and/or archiving to Databases, alarm lifecycle management (outstanding, acknowledged, or terminated) and sophisticated alarm lifecycle coherent with Trouble Ticketing activity (example: automatic alarm termination on Trouble Ticket closure).

• The HPE vTeMIP Low Level Filtering services bring flexible and easy-to-use raw event filtering capacities.

• The HPE vTeMIP Alarm Beautifier services harmonize alarms across vendors and Access Modules. It enriches and remaps alarm attributes using lookups from external databases, preprocessed variables, and predefined functions/conditions.

• The HPE vTeMIP Resynchronization service enables resynchronization of vTeMIP Alarm status with the current status of managed equipment.

• The HPE vTeMIP Outage service provides control and monitoring of out-of-service periods for any managed device, and specific processing of events received from out-of-service resources. This can be applied to planned and unplanned out-of-service periods.

• The HPE vTeMIP Universal Notifier service provides automated notification (integration with third-party notification systems, TelAlert from MIR3).

Mediation Services vTeMIP unifies the management of an infrastructure array provided by different network equipment vendors. Thousands of devices are supported through off-the-shelf integrations with third-party NMS and EMS, IP devices, and system and application event sources. Additionally, mediation capabilities can be developed on demand. The vTeMIP Mediation deployment, used to integrate with a piece of equipment or a third-party Element Management System (EMS), depends on the management protocol used by the EMS and the required management functionalities.Southbound interfaces fall in two categories:• HPE OSS UMB-based new generation of HPE OSS Assurance mediation services (one

adapter per NMS/EMS type). Such mediation is very flexible; it can support any transport and any protocol.

• Traditional HPE vTeMIP Access Modules: – CORBA Access Modules support CORBA protocol – GAT/ASCII Access Modules—mediation for legacy telecommunication equipment—use ASCII to report management information or to receive control – IST/SNMP Access Modules for direct integration of SNMP agents

One Access Module per element type or network management system is required. Once deployed, an Access Module can manage several instances of network elements. Additionally, extensive connectivity to IP devices and IT infrastructure is enabled with the integration with any IP or IT domain managers.

Key features (continued)

Rich, intuitive web user interface vTeMIP comes with brand new, intuitive web user interfaces working on any desktop or device with HTML5 browsers. The vTeMIP dashboards and detailed views, as well as interactive control functions are easy to use. They can be customized in a few clicks to meet the NOC organizational needs such as managed network and services technologies, geographical focus, and more. The new vTeMIP User Interfaces integrate seamlessly into the wider HPE Unified OSS Console Assurance Solution, an Operations portal with integrated views and a unified user experience across multiple OSS areas such as fault, performance, incidents, service-level agreements, and customer experience.

Security and Access Control vTeMIP offers a high level of security thanks to an Identity Provider (IdP), role-based access control, and logging of users actions. You can give your staff different and appropriate access by configuring user roles defining the level of security and restricting the use of vTeMIP. Associating user roles to users, you can let them see only the part of the network they need and invoke the actions, which are permitted for their role. You can also log the commands done by users to ease security audits when needed.

Fault data mining vTeMIP can export raw events and/or alarms to the optional HPE vTeMIP Fault Statistics (FAS) product. Fault data can then be mined and analyzed, letting you build powerful statistical reports to highlight fault patterns. This insight enables preventative maintenance helping you avoid serious network outages. These capabilities help you extract volume patterns hidden in the alarm flow, making it easy to monitor OSS infrastructure capacity and streamline human resource management. Automated filter pattern extraction identifies new potential alarms filters and correlation rules. It facilitates alarm detection and suppression—especially those seldom managed by operators.

Correlation for Root Cause and Service Impact Analysis

HPE UCA, integrated with vTeMIP, unlocks the full power of the information held within your operations by processing a large variety of data, including events and alarms, equipment states, route availability, and use. The knowledge can then be used for determining the root cause of problems and enable other key functions. HPE UCA calculates and presents the impact on services of a fault to the operator, derived from received fault reports, its knowledge of the network topology, and the type of infrastructure. Furthermore, the processing dramatically reduces the number of alarms, freeing operators up for other tasks.

Rich and intuitive graphical web user interfaces

The vTeMIP Web User Interfaces work on any desktop or device with HTML5 browsers. These User Interfaces are part of the Operations Web Portal delivered by the HPE Unified OSS Console Assurance Solution, with a unified user experience across the Network and Service Operations Centers.

• NOC and SOC operators have access to several off-the-shelf views, which help the staff easily handle network and service alarms and Trouble Tickets, in a very efficient manner (for example, acknowledge, unacknowledge, clear, terminate, get similar or associated alarms, display or create/update Trouble Tickets, and so on).

• For the NOC manager and the VP of operations, standard management dashboards are provided and specific dashboards can be built to provide synthetic information in real time: aggregation of faults (vTeMIP data) and other OSS applications (performance management, trouble management, SLA management, and so on).

• Additionally, the Unified OSS Console Graphical View Designer can be used to adapt these views to meet particular CSP’s business process flows, geographical and/or technology focus. This Graphical View Designer is an optional component of the offering. It allows modifying and/or adding views in a few clicks and makes them available on the fly to the end user. Modifications can also be worked offline and installed in production through simple commands.

Page 8Data sheet

Figure 4. Example of customized vTeMIP geographical dashboard with alarm age and distribution across technologies and vendors

vTeMIP User Interfaces are organized into workspaces, each workspace provides several views. Operators can configure and save their own workspace(s) and views for their own use, if permitted by their role.

• Real-time and historical alarm information display and management capacities enable operators to apply sophisticated user-defined filters, define multiple alarm display layouts, analyze selected alarm details, and react appropriately—for example, get extra information about faulty equipment and issue appropriate management directives:

– Get alarm details and similar alarms and/or associated alarms

– Acknowledge/unacknowledge, terminate/unterminate, clear, set operator note

– Create/update/close Trouble Ticket

– Launch views with selected alarm attributes

– Search, filter, order (with multiple field criteria), export to CSV

Figure 5. Example of vTeMIP Alarm views with alarm detail (pop-up) and geographical map

Page 9Data sheet

• Network topology helps users plan how to design, manage, and document their networks. Network topology maps define the properties and relationships between objects within a network, users can visualize connections between network equipment. Network topology maps can be depicted physically or logically.

– Physical topology maps visualize actual elements and devices and their physical locations and connections within networks.

– Logical topology maps visualize how data flows through networks, or expresses connections at different levels of detail.

These topologies help users to better monitor and manage their networks. If a network element was to go down, they can navigate to the geographical map to view location of affected devices or sites and related alarms, manage the problem, and quickly choose the best option to rectify the issue.

The topology maps (nodes and relationships) is built through the extraction of the information from network inventory systems or any other sources (for example, CSV files) and loaded into the appropriate OSS Console topology map tables. The update of this information can be scheduled to reflect the actual state of the network.

The decoration of the maps is done through the mapping of the alarm-managed object to the topology nodes, and the display of the actual number of notifications and severity on that node. When selecting a node, the user can access to all the alarms related to that node and take appropriate actions to manage the related issues.

Figure 6. Example of logical network topology map

• Fault Analytics and Statistics (FAS) allows for browsing, reporting, and analyzing nonmanaged events in addition to managed alarms and management information plus all fault analytics KPIs. FAS offers powerful reporting facilities based on HPE Unified OSS Console product. Through an integrated query, reporting, and analysis environment, end users can securely access the data, run analysis, and generate reports from the web portal.
