Overview

Business needs fast IT applications

More than ever, today’s business success depends on information technology. The business requires more than a working application. It requires applications that assist in fast and efficient execution of business processes. This is commonly called performance.

Good performance needs your action

All end users in your organization, who use IT business applications, take it for granted that these systems will provide instant results, a good user experience, and a quick response time.

The reality is that all people involved have to work hard every day to maintain the performance of the used applications. Continuous proactive monitoring of performance figures and trends are essential to ensure long-term usability of IT assets.

Bad performance puts your business at risk

Increased response time and decreased performance leads to user dissatisfaction, lower productivity, and customer complaints. In case capacity or performance is at its end, the system cannot provide the agreed service level anymore and may become unusable.

This leads to the following effects: unproductive employees and users, direct revenue loss, damaged reputation, and adverse financial impact.

Deep knowledge and special skills are required to successfully resolve performance incidents. Here is where the HPE expertise can help speed up your organization’s IT performance.

What is performance

IT services are the backbone of your business. Like all other important services, IT services also have to run with good performance. Besides quality measures such as accuracy and completeness, the performance of an IT service depends on its response time.

The service of interest will most likely be provided by an application. While this application is executed, it will consume different resources and it may have to wait for some of these to become available. This means that the response time of the service assembles from productive service times and unproductive wait times. Those wait times may be related to the design of the application or the utilization of the resources being used by the application. The higher the utilization of a resource, the longer the wait time for that resource to become available.

The two questions approach

To understand how the response time of a service assembles, two questions about the execution of an application should be answered:

• When the application is running, what is it doing?

• When the application is waiting, what is it waiting for?

When these questions can be answered, you know where to focus your performance tuning activities. The two fundamental questions lead to additional, more detailed ones:

• Do you have the tools to determine what the application is doing or waiting for?

• Do you have the knowledge to interpret the information provided by these tools?

Keep your performance activities proactive

Under all circumstances, you want your performance activities to be proactive. If you periodically document the response time of the services and the resulting resource utilization of the components involved, then you can determine trends and initiate corrective actions when a deviation is seen. This is where the standard services of the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team will benefit you.

To stay proactive and to avoid unnecessary reactive work, we can build a set of tailored proactive services that help you to protect the performance of your IT. A good understanding of your specific needs is required—this includes information about different aspects of the IT environment, such as:

•What is the main trigger? Is it a data center move, migration, upgrade, ongoing performance management, or any other?

•What is the current situation? Provide general customer situation, history of the environment, and such information.

•Who are the involved parties? Give details on IT departments, third-party service providers, outsourcing and consulting companies, system integrators, and more.

•What is the scope? Is it a single system, a subset of systems, or the entire IT environment?

•What are the other technical details? Provide information on current SLAs, user complaints, escalations, incidents, upcoming changes, and more.

Answering these questions enables the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team building an individual service plan.

If you, however, have to work reactively on a performance incident, then you probably have to do that in a production environment, which usually is most stressful for all parties involved. Even in such a scenario, the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team can assist you with individual consulting.

Overview

Insights into building compilations and complex services

Besides standard services, the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team also offers compilations for complex use cases. Typically these compositions are based on or derived from the standard services listed below. Additional offerings, like workshops, trainings, migration services, and SAP Solution Manager skills, supplement the performance offerings in an ideal manner.

Solution-Building compilationsOften, it is necessary to adapt services according to your specific needs. In this case, we bundle multiple services into a customer-specific package to fulfill the exact performance need. This bundle may be executed by different consultants, with one single contact for the customer.

Application packages: HPE Performance Services Guided Advice PackageThe main goal of HPE Performance Services Guided Advice Package is to find the best possible match between your performance needs and our performance offering.

To facilitate this, a technical consultant approaches you right from the beginning, discusses your current situation to understand the specific needs, investigates the environment status, assesses the exact requirements, and agrees with you on the scope of services to be covered. This decision is facts-based and derives from several information sources.

The HPE Performance Services Guided Advice Package comes with overall three days for performance support. It is split into one day for general assessment of customer performance requirement and guidance on infrastructure layer to be further analyzed, and two days for the execution and delivery of the performance analysis by itself. This is sufficient to cover most common scenarios—or to get a better idea about the range of your performance demand and more clarity about necessary additional steps. For more information see page 47.

Individual performance consultingIn case no standard service fits the specific need, we adapt and modify a service to the required needs. This is easily possible as the services are developed and implemented by the team.

SAP application layer services—SAP programs: SQL and ABAP traces

SAP programs: SQL and ABAP traces

Program and transaction performance

This service analyzes dedicated programs and transactions, determining where the time is spent and whether the runtime can be improvedDescriptionA general top-down analysis of an SAP system and its infrastructure can lead to overall improvements and more efficient resource usage. But for specific important programs or transactions additional improvements to individual objects might be required. This service analyzes one or more such programs by means of detailed SQL and ABAP traces.

Based on runtime statistics, SQL or ABAP traces (or both) are used to determine the hot spots, to determine where most of the time is spent. After recording, the data is analyzed and checked for possible improvements.

Prerequisites and notesRecording such traces typically requires a high level of collaboration from the users of the programs to analyze. In most cases, the traces are collected during a telephone conference with an end user who runs the programs while we configure and activate the traces. Afterwards, the results are analyzed offline.

The time required for the service depends on several factors, such as type and complexity of the programs (long-running ones might need several shorter traces), number of programs to trace, ease of reproduction of the issue, and end-user collaboration.

Benefits•Detailed runtime analysis of specific important programs or transactions

•Dedicated focus on pain points in the customer environment

•Most successful method on large systems with only a limited number of affected users (helping minimize side-effects)

•Bottom-up character complements top-down analysis of complete system or database

Deliverables•Direct contact with the service engineer (through telephone) to discuss details about the

programs and transactions to trace

•Telephone conference with user to record the traces

•Offline analysis of recorded data

•Written report with analysis results and recommendations for possible improvements

•Presentation of the results and findings through a telephone conference or remote session

SAP application layer services—SAP database: SQL Statement Cache Analysis

SAP database: SQL Statement Cache Analysis

Database performance

This service analyzes the SQL statements sent to the database to reduce its overall load and to improve the runtime of the affected programsDescriptionThe performance of the database is one of the most critical areas for productive SAP systems. In many cases, a relatively small number of SQL statements disproportionately increase the I/O and CPU load.

This service identifies such statements and analyzes each one individually to determine whether it could be improved.

Typically, the focus is on SQL statements with the highest total runtime, but it can also be set to e.g., I/O or CPU in case of known issues in those areas.

For each identified statement, the result of the analysis is reported:

•Statement and execution plan

•Resource usage

•Source (where possible)

•Reasons for high resource usage

•Recommendations for improvements or further tests and checks that might help making the access more efficient

While the analysis has a mainly technical focus, other aspects might also be taken into consideration (user behavior, program logic, and such).

The number of statements that can be analyzed per day depends on the complexity of each analysis.

Note: This is a snapshot analysis that reflects recent load. The time the service is delivered can be critical and more than one analysis might be necessary to capture all situations that need improvement.

Benefits•Reduce resource consumption of the database

•Improve overall database performance

•Increase runtime of affected transactions and programs

•Identify poor coding

•Detect maintenance issues

•Determine whether more improvement potential exists

Deliverables•Written report with executive summary and detailed documentation of findings

•Precise recommendations for possible improvements

•Explanations for high resource usage if improvements are not possible

•Recommendations for further investigations, if such seem required

•Direct contact with the service engineer (through telephone) to discuss scope and findings

Database services—Individual database performance analysis

Individual database performance analysis

Database performance consulting speeds up your application performance by quick database responses for Oracle, MS SQL, DB2, Sybase, MaxDB, SAP DB, and HANADescriptionA swift database system with very short response time is crucial for all applications utilizing it. The HPE SAP and Performance Services Team provides individual performance consulting depending on your needs and requirements.

As an illustration, let’s take an Oracle database health check: the team not only analyzes the resource utilization of the database server based on HPE Performance Agent or “collectl()” data, but also combines these operating system data sources with Oracle AWR reports. With this approach, we can suggest next investigation steps. For example, if we identify that Oracle internal wait states are the source of a performance limiting scenario our team can provide guidance for further investigations to identify the root cause.

The resulting report is individually created and thus highly dependent on the symptoms observed, data sources used, and analysis steps taken.

Talk to us, and together we can determine the correct approach.

Deliverables•Customer-specific performance consulting for databases

Individual Consulting and Cross Layer services—OS Capacity planning plus SAP workload analysis

OS Capacity planning plus SAP workload analysis

Decision makers need reliable data for budget planning or cost distributionDescriptionThere is a clear methodology in times when IT budgets are being watched carefully:

•Tune your systems to avoid or postpone hardware investments

•Have a precise understanding of the development of the major capacity and performance figures over a longer timeframe

There are several possibilities to collect data and support decisions.

SAP application layer: capacity and performance data based on HPE TAMS toolsetBesides the SAP workload data like response time, query runtime, transaction, or navigation steps and the database figures the CPU and RAM consumption of a whole year is summarized in one report. With this information, it’s easy to identify long-term trends, extraordinary events and hence extrapolate these figures.

Operating system layer: accurate server performance data based on HPE Operations Agent or the Linux tool collectl data•You may want to identify peaks more precisely because your system has to cope with

reoccurring peak situations at a certain performance

•Consolidated servers may host several SAP systems in parallel, and you need to know the hardware consumption of each SAP system separately

•There are many processes running on the operating system level and you need to evaluate their resource consumption

Correlation of SAP and OS levelCorrelating the SAP application level with the OS level to find the source of high hardware consumption

•You need this information to detect optimization potential

•You need this information to distribute costs to the originator

Benefits•Invest your hardware budget with the best possible effect

•Identify the cause for peak situations

•Distribute costs to the originator

Deliverables•Preliminary contact to define the scope

•Written report

•Documentation of the findings

•Executive summary with recommendations based on the defined scope

The Account Performance Consultant (APC) concept—HPE Account Performance Consultant: APC to manage your performance topics

HPE Account Performance Consultant: APC to manage your performance topics

The APC is a technical expert from the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team. The APC works as a single point of contact for all performance and capacity topics. The APC manages the following process:

1. Assessment of requirements and scope Based on individual requirements a service plan is compiled. It contains performance and capacity services for multiple technical layers (Application, OS, DB, storage, and virtualization). The scheduling frequency of proactive services is agreed upon based on upcoming projects and dynamics of the IT environment. The delivery of proactive services is complemented with a package of “services on demand” for unpredictable events.

2. Implementation of tools and collectors The APC supports implementation of required performance tools and collectors. Executing all proactive services based on the service plan, determines the start of the performance and capacity management.

3. Service plan execution Experienced technical consultants from the HPE SAP and Performance Services Team perform proactive services (ongoing and periodical) and reactive services (per-event, troubleshooting as required) based on the agreed scope of the service plan.

The APC communicates the results and recommends further actions, if necessary. The APC is the first contact to collect additional requirements raised by the customer, e.g., if additional services around upcoming projects such as updates, OS/DB upgrades are required, and more.

4. APC governance The APC manages resources in case there is additional performance and capacity services demand. They also manage all activities to meet the requirements of the service plan. On completing the service plan, the APC reviews the results with the customer and agrees on a refresh.

APC activities can be carried out remotely or on-site, as agreed. However, technical services are usually delivered remotely. The scope of the APC and service plan activities are determined with an agreed number of technical consulting days per year or per project.

The service plan is frequently checked and adjusted according to your needs. A typical period is 12 months. And, the minimum scope for the APC is 20 days of technical consulting.

This service plan is the core of the APC methodology. The service plan is compiled in close discussion and negotiation with the customer to fit the individual demand. Typically, the plan covers a period of one year. During the execution of the service plan, the APC supervises the delivery of the individual services. Additional consultants are assigned as required. Results are summarized and presented by the APC, who remains your single point of contact.
