DRIVE UNITThe AC drive and power unit is designedto handle the typical range of polymerrequirements. A direct-coupled motor providesefficient transmission of power to the gearreducer. The drive is housed in an electricalenclosurewhichcanswivelaroundthesupportcolumn to provide optimum operator positionrelativetotheextruder.

GEAR REDUCER & THRUST HOUSINGThegearreducerisaparallelshafthelicalgearunit.Gearing ismanufacturedfromalloysteeland is hardened and ground. The standardoverallgearreductionratiois17:1nominal,toprovidearound100rpmfeedscrewspeedwhenthe reducer is driven at 1750 rpm. The drivetorque capacities are sized to be suitable formostcommonlyprocessedmaterials.Thethrustbearingissizedfor60,000to100,000hoursL10 lifebasedonactualoperating conditions.Internals are immersion lubricated and thethrusthousingbearingsaregreaselubricated.

FEED SECTION & HOPPERThe feed section is casting cored for watercooling.Itincorporatesanairspacetominimizeheattransferfromthebarreltothegearreducer,and also provides maintenance access to thebushing and thrust shaft socket. For feedingefficiency, the feed throat is angled back 30degreesfromperpendicularwiththefeedscrewbore.Thehopperisconstructedofstainlesssteeland includes a slide shut-off gate, sight glass,anddumptube.

BARREL AND FEEDSCREWThe one-piece, 4140 steel tube barrel withbi-metallic cast-in liner is engineered foroperating pressures up to 10,000 psi.TheDS1000general-purposeliningalloyisiron-basedandisadequateformostapplications.

HEATING AND COOLINGEach barrel zone is fitted with a bolt-on castaluminumheater.Eachbarrelcontrolzonehasaseparatemotorizedblower.Theblowersareattachedtothebottomofindividualairshroudsmountedaroundeachheaterzone.

EXTRUDER SCREWStandard feedscrews supplied with theHPE machine are single-stage mixing typechrome-platedfeedscrews.

HEAD FLANGEA standard four-bolt flange is provided withthedie.Aclampflangeandclampassemblyisoptional.Theflangehasapressuretopatthe12 o’clock position for a supplied mechanicalpressure gauge. A transducer is optional.Over-pressurization protection is providedby a9,000 psi (620 bar) rupture disc at the6o’clockposition.

CONTROL CABINET Temperature controllers are provided foreach control zone. Standard scale is 0-600ºF(0-300ºC for export). Die zone power andthermocouples plug directly into the cabinet.The standard drive OCS consists of digitalfeedscrew rpm and Motor Load meters, StartandStoppushbuttons,aspeedpotentiometer,anddrivefaultpilotlight.
