OUR TAKEAn economical choice for small workgroups that need tabloid-size output, the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 (or the sis-ter model 7740, which includes a second paper draw-er standard) provides vibrant output and intuitive de-sign for a low total cost of ownership. Users can expect minimal downtime, as the unit completed Buyers Lab’s 30,000-impression durability test with no misfeeds and no service interventions. An intuitive design, including straightforward menus and detailed help on the touch-screen, plus simple routine maintenance procedures and higher-than average ink yields all help boost worker productivity. To support the changing needs of the mod-ern office, mobile printing is supported through a variety of apps and services. The HP Smart App, which has a fully customizable interface, makes mobile printing fast and easy, providing ink levels on the main screen and letting users print in fewer steps than many competitive apps. In print mode, text was cleanly formed and lines were smooth and consistent, while colors were vibrant and truer to the original than output from competitive devices tested. While priced competitively with business inkjets in this class, the HP OfficeJet Pro 7720/7740 has a cost of ownership that’s about half that of comparable laser models. Physical setup is straightforward as the unit is preassembled. Starter ink cartridges (rated yield of 1,000 impressions for black and 625 impressions for each color) are included, packaged separately within the printer box. The disc, which includes the PCL 3 driver, launches when inserted in the drive. The disc also includes the TWAIN Scan Driver, HP Printer Assistant, and Photo Creations. The IP address is assigned and the port is created automatically.

Web Jetadmin (the administrative utility) and the UPD (Universal Print Driver) can be downloaded for free from HP’s web-site. Web Jetadmin allows for management of a fleet of mixed hardware; information about third-party devices is depen-dent on what the manufacturer provides, which is typical. Buyers Lab has evaluated the utility for a Solutions Test Report and found it to be flexible, robust, and highly effective, with many features not offered on similar software from other OEMs.

Administrators can use Web Jetadmin to configure drivers and remotely install them on multiple PCs. Because Web Jetad-min integrates with Microsoft Active Directory, administrators don’t have to perform an IP broadcast to find devices on the network as it does so automatically, which can reduce network traffic. One-to-one and one-to-many cloning are achieved through the web utility and fleet management utility, respectively; this function can only be done with devices in the same family, which is common.

With Web Jetadmin, administrators can configure and diagnose multiple devices simultaneously, enforce duplexing, and establish when devices should enter specific low-power modes. It has a task-based interface modeled on a Windows appli-cation, and provides drag-and-drop functionality and right-click capability, as well as single sign-on using existing Micro-soft user profiles. Web Jetadmin also lets administrators create customized user profiles so that, for instance, a helpdesk employee can access the utility but won’t be able to change settings.

Organizations can supplement Web Jetadmin with EcoSMART Fleet, which enables administrators to control settings, col-lect data, and run reports, helping to bolster environmental friendliness.

According to Buyers Lab’s calculations, users can expect to replace supplies less frequently than with competitive models.

The easy-to-navigate embedded web utility allows administrators to quickly perform many tasks, including chang-ing device and security settings, activating Web Services, viewing and printing reports, performing print quality maintenance, and adjusting power settings.

Loading paper and adjusting the drawer for different size media is very simple. In fact, technicians noted that adjusting the drawer to support tabloid-size media was faster and simpler than with competing models. The drawer’s length and width guides move in sync once the tabs have been pressed. There are no spring-load-ed ramps, corner separators, or anything else to im-pede the process. Typical of devices in this class, users must confirm paper size on the display. Clearing a mis-feed from any of the access areas is straightforward. Animated step-by-step instructions with a graphic of the unit are brought up on the touchscreen when a jam occurs.

Replacing ink is an easy process too. Users simply open the door to access the cartridges, after which they can then pull out the old one and an insert a new one. Ex-tensive instructions are available on the display, as well as inside the cover, should they be required.

User interventions are calculated based on manufacturer’s rated toner yields (in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711/19798), as well as the manufacturer’s rated yields for other consumables (drums, developer units, waste containers, etc.). Buyers Lab calculates the total number of supplies and maintenance parts that would be required over 36 months (assuming 875 pages per month). Each individual cartridge or other consumable is counted as one intervention. Paper supply replenishments aren’t included in Buyers Lab’s calculations. WALK-UP EXPERIENCE Good

As would be expected of a device in this class, users cannot perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Jobs are processed on a first-in, first-out basis and priority mode cannot be changed. There is no interrupt mode, but there is a copy reserve (stor-age based on available resources) and users can scan during a misfeed.

Walk-up functions are very simple thanks to the small but intuitive 2.65" touchscreen control panel.

The scan and copy menus are well-organized and straightforward to navigate.

WORKSTATION EXPERIENCE Very Good

Users are kept well aware of device status thanks to the feedback utility, HP Printer Status and Alerts, and the UPD. The feedback utility alerts users of error conditions via pop-up messages (however, pop-up messages are not supported for Windows 10), while the UPD provides feedback so users can also see any device issue when they open the driver.

Print job completion notification and audible alerts are not supported, which is common of devices in this class.

The UPD gives users the luxury of printing to nearly any HP device and select HP hardware on the network with a single driver.

The print driver is well-organized and easy to navigate. The Help button, available on most tabs of the driver, provides users with information about specific features and how to update the drivers.

Using the embedded web server or Web Jetadmin, administrators can establish email alerts for error conditions to be sent to designated personnel.

Users can view detailed consumables information by accessing the web utility (by entering the IP address in a browser as there’s no link in the driver).

The main screen of the driver is where users can select common job types with a single click and save custom settings. Duplex and paper size can be programmed from this screen; users must navigate to other tabs to choose quantity and orientation. Graphical changes in the upper right corner of most of the tabs detail when features such as duplex have been enabled.

MOBILITY Not Rated

The Mopria-certified unit lets users print from mobile devices in a variety of ways. This configuration includes a standard wireless connection.

HP ePrint embedded enables printing from smartphones and tablets by emailing documents to the unit, while support for AirPrint and Google Cloud Print adds more flexibility.

The ePrint App is compatible with iOS, and the ePrint Home & Biz App is available for Android and Nokia. And ePrint Enterprise, a server-based system that sits inside an organization’s firewall, lets users securely print from their mobile device to any device brand on the network.

APP SPOTLIGHT: HP SMART APP

The HP Smart App (formerly known as HP All-in-One Printer Remote app) is a free mobile printing app that allows users to print, scan, share, and store documents from their device to compatible HP output devices. The app also supports printing from cloud storage repositories, email, Microsoft Office, and social media. It is available on iOS 9.0 or later, Android 4.1 or later, Windows 10 Mobile, Google Chrome, and Amazon-powered devices.

Print support for local files in PDF, JPG, PNG, DOCx, and XLSx formats, as well as emails/attachments. Users can print and enhance photos from their device’s camera roll or through Document Capture.

Variety of print settings include Copies (1-5 on iOS, 1-99 on Android), Color Option, (Color or Grayscale), Print Quality (Draft, Normal, Best), Paper size (Legal, Letter or A4), Duplex Print (Off, Short edge or Long edge), Resize (Fit to Page of Fill Page), Crop, and Page Range (enables users to choose which and how many pages of a single document to print) which helps mit-igate unnecessary printing.

Scan functionality provides various options for input type (document or image), input source (auto, scanner glass or ADF), quality (75, 200 or 300dpi) and color or grayscale. Users can preview and edit the document when the scanning process is complete and include additional scans to create a multi-page file (PDFs are saved to the apps Documents local folder, JPEGs are saved in the Images local folder). Paper size options for scan functionality include Letter, A4, 4 x 6, 5 x 7, Legal, 3.5 x 5 and custom size, which enables users to drag and resize to any size up to 8.5” x 14”.

Scanned documents and photos can be shared through the same cloud services as printed documents (with the exception of OneDrive), but can also be shared via a custom-entered web URL. Users can also upload scanned images to their Facebook account from the app.

Compatible with a wide variety of HP models, the HP Smart App UI is nearly identical on both iOS (left) and Android (right) platforms.

The print preview screen enables pinch-and-drag commands to zoom into the document and flick functionality to scroll through a set of pages (iOS pictured). The tree structure for locally stored files allows the user to move, rename, and delete documents, as well as create folders to store said documents.

A broad range of document editing options are avail-able through the Preview function (iOS pictured).

SUPPORTING TEST DATA

Test Environment: This product was tested in Buyers Lab’s US test lab, in an environment monitored by two Temp/RH chart recorders, which ensures that the typical office conditions are being maintained. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from affecting equipment under test.

Test Equipment: Buyers Lab’s dedicated test network in the US, consisting of Windows 2008 servers, Windows 8 and 10 workstations, 10/100/1000BaseTX network switches, and CAT5e/6 cabling.

Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with 25 percent of the test volume comprised of copy jobs and 75 percent comprised of print jobs. Buyers Lab’s daily test usage is designed to rep-licate real-world use over an eight-hour workday, and as such includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day. The durability evaluation also includes testing of the document feeder/scanner in simplex and duplex modes for an additional 10 percent of the monthly maximum volume, evenly divided over the course of the test.

Tested Configuration: HP OfficeJet Pro 7720, which includes one standard paper drawer and HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, which includes a second paper drawer standard (US).

Competitive Average Model Group: Buyers Lab defines competitive models as comparably equipped models, that support the same maximum paper size as the tested model, in the same speed range (+/- 5ppm), with a sim-ilar duty cycle and target market. Tested speed performance is compared to competitive devices in this speed range tested to date. For all other sections that have data analysis, comparisons are made against competitive devices in this speed range.

Test Procedures: Buyers Lab’s lab testing includes both BLI proprietary and industry-standard test procedures and documents. The reliability test is conducted using Georgia Pacific and Boise paper in the US, and UPM, Data Copy and Mondi paper in the UK. In both labs, 30 percent of the paper is recycled. The media used for image qual-ity testing is Georgia Pacific Printing Paper (24 lb., 96 brightness) in the US and UPM Future ImageTech 100gsm in the UK.
