3 Configure Mass Storage

Decide RAID or Non-RAIDThe disk drives in the secondary hot-swap mass storage cage, along with any non-hot-swap SCSI devices, can be configured in two different ways:

• Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) configuration undercontrol of the integrated HP NetRAID controller

• Non-RAID configuration under the control of the SCSI B controller

Non-RAID configuration (also called "JBOD" or "Just a Bunch of Disks"configuration) is quick and easy, and it is the factory default for the SCSI BChannel. All Network Operating Systems (NOSs) supported by your NetServercan be installed on drives controlled by a non-RAID SCSI controller. This chapterdescribes non-RAID configuration.

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) configuration can enhanceperformance and provide fault tolerance (redundancy). For more information, seethe Integrated HP NetRAID Controller Configuration Guide . Some NOSs cannotbe installed on a RAID logical drive. If you want RAID configuration, go toAppendix A.

NOTE Integrated HP NetRAID does NOT support tape drives.Configuring both hot-swap mass storage cages as RAID meansthat the NetServer’s I/O board does NOT support tape drives inthe non-hot-swap shelves.

To configure both hot-swap mass storage cages as RAID anduse a tape drive, order the D5025A SCSI controller board , andinstall it to control the tape drive.

Non-RAID ConfigurationYou connected the secondary hot-swap mass storage cage to the HP NetServer’sSCSI B Channel. The factory default settings exclude SCSI B from the integratedHP NetRAID controller. This puts the secondary cage on the SCSI B controller, which also controls any non-hot-swap SCSI devices.

Page 50: HP NetServer LH 3/3r and LH 4/4r Mass Storage Upgrade Kit ...community.hpe.com/hpeb/attachments/hpeb/itrc-249/8567/1/271165… · jewelry. Note that the power switch does NOT turn

Chapter 3 Configure Mass Storage

46

Non-RAID configuration of the SCSI B channel DOES support tape drives.

NOTE Non-hot-swap SCSI devices have a dedicated connector on theSCSI B Channel. This connection isolates the non-hot-swapdevices from the secondary hot-swap mass storage cage toallow the hot-swap drives to operate as Ultra2 SCSI.

For non-RAID configuration, do the following:

• Back up all data on the NetServer.

• Verify non-RAID control of the SCSI B channel and boot order by runningthe Setup utility, as described in "Run Setup Utility" below.

• Verify the display, operation, and boot order of the non-RAID SCSIchannels, as described in "Run Symbios Configuration Utility" below.

• Verify the secondary hot-swap mass storage cage installation and the diskdrive module installation, as described in "Verify Disk Drive Modules"below.

Back Up DataBefore you change the configuration of your mass storage, back up all data on theHP NetServer and any external enclosures connected to it.

Run Setup UtilityUse the Setup utility to verify non-RAID control of the SCSI B Channel and toverify the boot device priority and the priority of various hard disk drivecontrollers within the boot device priority.

If SCSI channels A and B are both non-RAID, use the Symbios ConfigurationUtility to set the channel to be searched first for a bootable drive, as described in"Run Symbios Configuration Utility" in this chapter.

Verify Hard Disk Drive ModulesAs the HP NetServer restarts, watch the display monitor to determine whether allthe drives you installed have been detected.

NOTE Any SCSI devices controlled by the integrated HP NetRAIDcontroller will NOT be displayed during the boot process.Any SCSI devices controlled by a SCSI controller without aboot order number will NOT be displayed during the bootprocess.

If no drives in the secondary hot-swap mass storage cage are detected, refer toChapter 2 as you do the following:

1. Turn off power to the NetServer, and unplug the AC power cord(s).

2. Remove Cover 1.

3. Verify that the power harness is connected correctly to the cage.

4. Verify that the SCSI cable is connected correctly to the cage.

5. Remove the Fan 1 Assembly to verify that the SCSI cable is connectedcorrectly to the SCSI B connector on the I/O board.

6. Replace the Fan 1 Assembly and plug in the Fan 1 cable.

7. Replace Cover 1.

8. Reconnect the AC power cord(s), and restart the NetServer.

9. Watch the display monitor for the boot listing of SCSI devices to determinewhether all the drives you installed have been detected.

If one drive was not detected, refer to the HP NetServer Ultra2 SCSI Hot-swapHard Disk Drive and Tray User Guide as you do the following:

1. Determine which drive was not detected. Do this by comparing the SCSIaddresses (IDs) of the detected drives with the SCSI addresses in "AboutSCSI Addresses in Secondary Cage" in Chapter 2 of this guide. (This driveand its module are referred to as "suspect" in the actions below.)

2. Remove the suspect module, and then reinstall it.

3. Restart the NetServer, and see whether the suspect drive is detected.

◊ If the suspect drive is detected, the problem is solved.

◊ If the suspect drive is not detected, swap the suspect module foranother module that was detected in another position, restart theNetServer, and see whether either of those two drives are detected.

∗ If the suspect drive is detected in its new position, the secondaryhot-swap mass storage cage may be defective. Contact your reseller.

∗ If the other drive (in the module swapped for the suspect module) isnot detected in its new position, the secondary hot-swap massstorage cage may be defective. Contact your reseller.

∗ If the suspect drive is not detected in its new position, go to action4 below.

4. The suspect drive was not detected, even in another position:

◊ If you purchased the disk drive module already assembled, the modulemay be defective. Contact your reseller.

◊ If you installed the disk drive into the tray, check that installation. Referto the HP NetServer Ultra2 SCSI Hot-swap Hard Disk Drive and TrayUser Guide to do the following: remove the module from the cage;reinstall the disk drive into the tray, and reinstall the module into thecage. Restart the NetServer to see if the drive is detected.

∗ If so, the problem is solved.

∗ If not, the disk drive or the tray may be defective. Contact yourreseller.

A RAID Configuration

RAID configuration of disk drives in the second hot-swap mass storage cagediffers for the following cases:

• Initial configuration of the HP NetServer with two integrated HP NetRAIDchannels

• Later addition of the second integrated HP NetRAID channel

NOTE Integrated HP NetRAID does NOT support tape drives.Configuring both hot-swap mass storage cages as RAID meansthat the NetServer’s I/O board does NOT support tape drives inthe non-hot-swap shelves.

To configure both hot-swap mass storage cages as RAID anduse a tape drive, order the D5025A SCSI controller board , andinstall it to control the tape drive.

Initial Configuration with Two Integrated HPNetRAID Channels

Refer to the Integrated HP NetRAID Controller Configuration Guide .

Later Addition of a Second Integrated HP NetRAIDChannel

If you intend to use Custom configuration mode in the HP NetRAID AssistantWizard, plan your configuration by using the planning chapter of the IntegratedHP NetRAID Controller Configuration Guide .
