limits of today’s
processor architectures
• processor architecture advances of RISC no longer growing at the rate seen in the 1980s –1990s
• complexity of certain workloads are exceeding IA-32’s capabilities
• yet customers relentlessly demand greater application performance, due to:
– higher bandwidth tasks (streaming)
– requirements for secure processing (SSL)
– increased users and demand (internet)
– larger hardware requirements (VLDB)
– support for multi-OS environments (virtual data center)
• to address the future business needs of:
– greater flexibility– better price/performance

power is IBM’s primary enterprise architecture. X-Architecture “Summit” chipset promise is limited:
– not optimized for 1-4-way Itanium 2- based systems
– X-Architecture scalability is unproven due to high-latency interconnect
– no published upgrade path to Itanium processors
– no AIX support on Itanium
Sun stands alone in not supporting the Itanium architecture
– weak performance on SPARC
– a generation behind – Itanium-based solutions from
hp outperform now and in the future
– no Itanium processor roadmap– poor economies of scale for the
future– very weak Windows, Linux and
IA-32 solutions
Dell has limited experience delivering enterprise solutions:
– lacks services and support expertise
– no breadth in product line to handle enterprise-wide solutions
– commodity only player with no value-add for Itanium-based architecture

announced that PNNL had
ordered a $24.5 million hp
supercomputer.
consisting of 1,400 of the of Intel® Itanium® 2 processors, the new hp
supercomputer would have an expected total peak performance
of more than 8.3 teraflops.
“This new computing power will advance scientific study in a host of areas and keep DOE and our national laboratories on the cutting edge of technology”

"The Johns Hopkins Sloan Digital Sky Survey has been expanding its catalog size to about 300 million celestial objects that are stored in a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. The project manages computations for calculating the distances between all pairs of objects within the catalog. The positive effects of large memory were seen very clearly in the first generation 64-bit Itanium-based server. With HP’s 64-bit Intel Itanium-based platform configured with 28 GB of memory we were able to do the job in 10 days, where it would have taken half a year previously.“
Alex SzalayJohns Hopkins University
“Using the Itanium 2 architecture, HP’s engineers worked closely with PNNL to apply computational science to key scientific challenges. With the advanced processing power and peak performance delivered by the Itanium 2 architecture and HP’s world-class services and support, PNNL now will have one of the fastest and most powerful supercomputers in the world, and the world’s most powerful Linux-based supercomputer to take on these challenges."

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory“We have been using the HP Itanium-based DL590/64 server for over a year now, and we are impressed with its performance, especially when we we are processing very large volumes of data. We are looking forward to using the next-generation Itanium 2-based systems and seeing how the new SAS configuration will increase performance.”

“We were very impressed by the stability of HP-UX on the new architecture, and by the ability to run Linux, Windows NT and HP-UX on the same platform. The compiler, though very complex, worked correctly. "Although we knew hp had been working very hard on Itanium with Intel, we didn't expect so much progress to have been made so quickly.“ Olivier Oudin,
laboratory manager, Airbus

“We’ve amassed a considerable number of computer models for the assessment of the crash-worthiness of vehicles. These models require an immense amount of computational power, requiring a real super-computer. The hp Itanium server fills that requirement, and then some.”

"The ability to run several operating systems on a single platform will deliver both cost and technology lifecycle benefits. Another benefit for us is interoperability between operating systems like Linux and HP-UX. Thanks to common APIs and binary interfaces across HP-UX and Linux, we can develop once on one operating system and deploy on many."

"A key element in the design of Intel’s Itanium processor is binary compatibility with hp’s existing systems to ensure that we have a smooth transition to Itanium while maximizing current technology investments. Overall, Itanium provides a wide range of platform and operating system choices, promoting flexibility and choice."

"We are looking at Itanium and the Itanium based architecture as the hardware platform for the server nodes in the future tele- and datacomm. networks. Since we believe that IA-64 architecture will end up being as ubiquitous as the IA-32 bit is today choosing Itanium was quite natural for us. TelORB includes an high performance in-memory database that will especially benefit from the large addressing space provided by the Itanium machines."
Alexander Larruy, M.S.C.Ericsson Utvecklings ABNetwork Core Products
"Due to their joint development with Intel, I trust that hp can provide a smooth transition to the new architecture and a broad Itanium solution set (services, financing, consulting, etc.) enabling us to realize the full benefits of Itanium, including enhanced performance, scalability and multi-OS capabilities that will significantly reduce IT complexity and costs.“
