Introduction

A. Product overview

The HP ElitePad 1000 G2 Healthcare Tablet is a Windows

tablet solution designed for use in the healthcare environment.

The healthcare tablet has an anti-microbial surface, meets

IP54 standards, and features a *Smart Card Reader which

prevents unauthorized access to patient and medical information.

In addition, the healthcare tablet has a long-life battery that makes

it an ideal mobile PC solution for the healthcare environment.

Note: The following parts are not treated with anti-microbials: Quick Release pins, camera lens, flash cover, bar code

reader cover, screws, screen and HP logo.

The healthcare tablet offers the following configurable options:

a. 2D barcode scanner—Enables accurate and immediate data capturing, and minimizes human

error when recording data

b. WWAN technology—Allows customers to wirelessly access, record, and transfer patient and

medical data

c. Near Field Communication (NFC)—Enables customers to wirelessly share data by tapping NFC-

compatible devices

Supported technologies

The following technologies are supported on the healthcare tablet.

A. Smart Card Reader:

The integrated, encrypted Smart Card Reader controls user access to the system. The card reader is *FIPS

201-certified and enables data encryption up to **FIPS-140-2 standards. The Smart Card Reader reads

both Smart Cards and Common Access Cards (CAC).

Notes:

*Federal Information Processing Standard 201 (FIPS 201) is a United States government standard publication that

specifies Personal Identity Verification (PIV) requirements for federal employees and contractors.

**FIPS 140-2 is a U.S. Government security standard used to accredit cryptographic modules used in computers and

software. The Smart Card Reader uses a FIPS 140-2 certified encryption module from Microsoft.

A Smart Card is not included DIB with the healthcare tablet. The Customer has to purchase the Smart Card

separately. The Smart Card Reader is activated when the Smart Card is inserted in the healthcare tablet.

The customer should make sure that the security software has been configured to be used with the Smart

Card.

B. IP Protection classification

The degree of protection provided by the healthcare tablet enclosures against dust, accidental contact and

water is classified, rated, and published by the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) using the

International Protection (IP) standard (IEC 60529).

The healthcare tablet has the IP54 IP classification rates based on the level of protection it provides. This

means that the healthcare tablet is protected and sealed from:

C. Barcode scanner—Configurable option

The healthcare tablet can be configured with an optional barcode scanner that features two push buttons

for easy scanner activation.

D. Quick release hand straps

Quick release hand straps are designed to be installed on either the left or right side of the healthcare

tablet to accommodate left-handed or right-handed people. Two straps are provided in the product

shipment, but only one is installed at a time. This allows the second strap to be cleaned and sterilized.

To insert the hand strap, follow these steps:

1. Turn the healthcare tablet so that the rear view faces you.

2. Remove the quick release pins. If you want to attach only one hand strap, then only remove one pair of

pins.

3. Place the quick release pins in the preferred holes in the hand strap.

4. Push the quick release pins in the hand strap connector slots until they click into position.

The hand straps and quick release pins are not available as after-market-options (AMOs), but can be

E. Pen clip connector

The healthcare tablet features two pen clip connector slots at the top of the PC—one on the front view

and one on the back view—to attach a white pen clip connector. The pen clip connector accommodates

the HP Executive Tablet Pen G2.

1. The HP Executive Tablet Pen G2 stylus does not ship DIB, and can be purchased separately using the HP Part

Number F3G73AA.

2. The pen clip holder for the healthcare tablet is not available as an AMO, but is available with the HP Spare Part

HP System Software Recovery Disks (SSRDs) are not included DIB with the shipment. Software drivers are

installed on the healthcare tablet at the factory. If a customer needs to perform a system recovery, they can

download the software drivers from hp.com, on the product services page.

The healthcare tablet supports a range of accessories that do not ship DIB. These accessories can be purchased

Getting started

When the customer sets up the healthcare tablet for the first time, they should be sure to follow these

steps:

1. Connect the duck-head connector to the AC adapter.

2. Connect the AC adapter to the system connector on the healthcare tablet.

3. Press the power button on the healthcare tablet.

Note: The healthcare tablet has a factory-sealed battery. Before you press the power button to turn on the

healthcare tablet for the first time, make sure that the AC adapter is connected to the tablet.

Wireless connectivity

The healthcare tablet provides the following types of secure wireless connectivity options for healthcare

professionals to access vital and confidential patient information in real time:

A. Bluetooth

To establish a Bluetooth connection with a compatible Bluetooth device, the customer can use these

methods:

a. From the Start screen

1. Open the Charms bar, and select the Settings charm.

2. Tap Change PC settings.

3. Select the PC and devices setting.

4. Select the Bluetooth option.

5. In the Manage Bluetooth devices menu, make sure that Bluetooth is enabled (turned On).

The tablet automatically searches for Bluetooth devices within range that are Bluetooth-

enabled and are in discoverable mode.

6. Tap a device that is ready to pair with the healthcare tablet. A pass code is sent to the Bluetooth

device, and the user is asked to compare the pass codes.

7. Verify the pass code, or if required, enter the pass code on the other device, and then tap Yes to

complete the connection.



b. From the Bluetooth icon in the system tray

Alternately the customer can use the Bluetooth icon in the system tray to establish a Bluetooth

connection with another compatible Bluetooth device.

To do so, they should follow these steps:

1. Open the system tray menu, and select the Bluetooth icon.

2. Select Add a Bluetooth Device to establish a connection with another Bluetooth device.

B. Wi-Fi

To connect the healthcare tablet to a wireless network, the customer can use these methods:

a. From the Start screen

1. Swipe from the right edge of the Start screen to display the charms.

2. Select the Settings charm.

3. At the bottom of the Settings menu, tap the wireless network icon.

4. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.

5. Select the preferred network, and

then tap Connect.

b. From the wireless icon in the system tray

1. Tap the wireless network icon.

2. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.

3. Select the preferred network, and then tap Connect.

Notes:

To set up WLAN and connect to the Internet, you need the following items:

C. Mobile Broadband—Configurable option

Healthcare tablets configured with WWAN technology feature software that enables the customer to

locate available Mobile Broadband services, activate the service, and create a wireless connection.

To configure the connection, the customer should:

1. Tap the wireless network icon in the system tray.

2. Select the desired Mobile Broadband Service provider.

3. Follow the instructions to activate the service (if the service has

not already been activated on the device).

4. Once activated, select the connection.

5. Tap Connect to connect the device to the service.

D. Near Field Communication (NFC)—Configurable option

The healthcare tablet includes an NFC radio. NFC is a short-range wireless technology that provides very

simple communications at very close proximity. The NFC antenna is located on the front of the healthcare

tablet, underneath the glass. The healthcare tablet ships with a screen cling on the display panel that

indicates the location of the NFC antenna, as shown in the following graphic:



To transfer a file using NFC:

1. Open the Charms bar and select the Devices charm.

2. Select Tap and send.

3. Locate the NFC antenna on the healthcare tablet and position it

within 4 cm of another NFC antenna.

4. Listen for an audible beep indicating that the two NFC antennas

recognize each other.

5. A pop-up displays on the receiving device for 25 seconds, asking if

that device wishes to receive the data.

6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note:

You can only send files via NFC. You cannot use NFC to share the healthcare tablet desktop with another PC.



Inserting and removing a SIM or SD card

Warning!

HP requires that HP Custom Integration Services (CIS), an authorized HP service provider, or participants in the HP

Self Maintainer program perform maintenance operations, including insertion or removal of a SIM or SD card. Any

damage caused by the customer removing the jacket is not covered under the limited warranty of the product.

To insert or remove a SIM or SD card, follow these steps:

a) Remove the jacket.

1. Shut down the healthcare tablet.

2. Disconnect all external devices connected to the healthcare tablet.

3. Unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.

4. To remove the jacket, see the removal video at http://www.hp.com/go/sml

5. Lift the tablet from the jacket at an angle, starting at the top, as indicated in the following image.

b) Open the access door and insert the SIM card or SD card.

6. Insert the end of a paper clip into the microSD Card Reader/microSIM slot access hole (label 1),

and then open the access door (label 2).

7. Insert the SIM card into the SIM slot (label 3) or the SD card into the SD card slot, and then push to

lock it.

c) Close the access door.

8. Insert the door hinge (label 1 in image below), and then close the access door (label 2 in image

below).

d) Reinstall the jacket and switch on the healthcare tablet

10. Reconnect external power.

11. Reconnect any external devices.

Connecting an additional display

Customers can connect one additional display to the healthcare tablet using either the HDMI port on the

healthcare tablet, or by using the HP ElitePad HDMI/VGA Adapter.

To connect an additional display, do the following:

1. Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the healthcare tablet, and the other HDMI end

to an external monitor.

2. Power on the monitor. The desktop image on the healthcare tablet is automatically cloned to the

external monitor.

Use the Windows Control Panel Display settings to perform standard Windows cloning or extending

functions. Users can change the default resolution, detect and identify the displays, and select whether to

clone or extend the display.

Note:

The healthcare tablet supports only one additional display. This is because the processor supports a maximum of

two displays—the internal LCD display and one external monitor. If connections are made to two monitors at the

same time, the healthcare tablet defaults to the HDMI connection.

HP offers the whole unit replacement strategy for the healthcare tablet, only within the warranty period.

In the event that the healthcare tablet has to be replaced, but is out of warranty, the customer will have to

purchase the device as a customer self-repair (CSR) part using the following part numbers:

C. Serial number location

The healthcare tablet has a unique serial number that is used to track warranty specifications, and for

support purposes.

The serial number and additional information can be found on the service label that is placed on the back

view of the healthcare tablet, as indicated in the following graphic.



Troubleshooting

The following are some ideas for helping a customer to troubleshoot the healthcare tablet if they

encounter problems after the initial setup.

Make sure the battery has enough power or that the healthcare tablet is connected to AC power. The

healthcare tablet does not provide a battery charge LED on the unit. Ask the customer to check the

battery status icon in the Desktop system tray to determine battery status.

Check all cable connections to accessories and peripherals for loose or improper connections.

Determine whether the healthcare tablet is in a low-power (sleep) state. If so, press the touchscreen

or the power button to wake the healthcare tablet. If the healthcare tablet does not awaken, press

and hold down the power button for at least 4 seconds to power off the system, and then restart

the system.

Ensure that all the necessary device drivers have been installed. Check to see if any updated device

drivers are available on the HP website.

Remove any accessories and see if the healthcare tablet functions properly.

Uninstall recently added software and see if the healthcare tablet functions properly.

Refresh the operating system using Windows Refresh to see if the healthcare tablet functions

properly.

Update the BIOS. A new version of the BIOS could have been released that supports new features or

fixes the issue.



Customers could contact the HP Call Centers with the following issues experienced with the HP ElitePad

1000 G2 Healthcare Tablet.

Issue Possible solution

The HDMI port is not displaying an

image on an external monitor or

projector.

The healthcare tablet supports only one additional display using

the HDMI port, or a VGA connection when using the HP ElitePad

Charging Dock. If connections are made to two monitors at the

same time, the healthcare tablet defaults to the HDMI

connection.

Only one monitor is working when

the healthcare tablet is connected to

two monitors.

The healthcare tablet only supports one video out, whether

the HP ElitePad VGA/HDMI Adapter is used or whether it is

docked. The customer must select either the VGA or HDMI

port. If both ports are connected to monitors, the HDMI

connection will be displayed by default.

Note: An external monitor with a screen resolution of 1366 x 768 or

higher is required for the Windows 8.x SNAP feature to work. This is

because Windows 8.x SNAP requires an aspect ratio of 16:9.

The Windows 8.x virtual keyboard

does not auto-launch.

The Windows 8.x virtual keyboard only auto-launches in the

modern app area; it does not auto-launch in classic desktop

mode. This is functioning as designed.

During the initial setup, the healthcare

tablet displays a COA Invalid error.

Windows 8.x uses a digital Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

that is tied to the firmware and system board. Microsoft uses

this digital COA to verify and activate the OS. When the OS

unbundling procedure completes, one of three scenarios

occurs:

If the computer has an Internet connection, the activation

process occurs seamlessly.

If the computer does not have an Internet connection, the

user is prompted to activate by phone.

If there is no attempt to activate within a certain period of

time, Windows 8.x still operates but with reduced

functionality. Windows 8.x will continue to prompt the

customer to activate the operating system.



The 70-pin connector does not allow a

charge from a well known power

source.

The healthcare tablet is compatible only with the HP ElitePad 10

W AC Adapter, and cannot be charged by any other adapter.

The ports on the healthcare tablet—

the barcode scanner, Smart Card

Reader, USB and HDMI—do not

function

In the event that the ports on the healthcare tablet do not

function, reboot the unit. If the ports are still faulty, return the

healthcare tablet to an HP Authorized Service Provider (ASP)

for a service.

The barcode scanner does not

illuminate the target barcode.

Check the following:

Drivers for the barcode scanner—Download updated

drivers from the HP website.

Software—Make sure the healthcare tablet has software

that supports the barcode scanner installed.

The audio jack does not provide sound. Check the drivers for the audio features—Download updated


The microphone does not pick up

sounds.

Check the drivers for the microphone—Download updated


The input/output door does not close

properly.

Gently push the input/output door hinges back into the

healthcare tablet, and then try to close the door.

The touchscreen is unresponsive. If the touch screen seems unresponsive, try these options:

Touch the Windows Home key twice.

Are there any software apps that support

or control the hardware technologies

available on the healthcare tablet, such

as HP Client Security and HP BIOS

Protection security software?

HP Client Security works with the Smart Card Reader;

however, HP does not provide the authentication

“middleware” (such as ActiveClient) that needs to be installed

to allow HP Client Security to access it. This needs to be

licensed and provided by the customer.

Does the shipment include any software

drivers?

Software drivers are installed on the healthcare tablet at the

factory. In the event that the system’s operating system

needs to be recovered, the customer can download the

software drivers from hp.com, on the product services page.

Note: SSRDs are not included DIB with the shipment.

Will firmware updates for hardware

components, such as the barcode

scanner and USB port/s be available for

download from hp.com?

Yes. All drivers and updates will be available for download

from hp.com, on the product services page.

In the event that the healthcare tablet’s

operating system needs to be

recovered, will the user require drivers

for the jackets, or will the drivers be

available for download from hp.com?

Yes. All drivers and updates will be available for download

Must the barcode scanner first be

configured with the tablet’s OS before

the user can use them?

No, but the customer should make sure that software is

installed on the healthcare tablet to use the barcode for their

specific business needs. A customer can use Excel or

Notepad to record barcodes after scanning.

Must the jacket on the healthcare tablet

first be configured with the tablet’s OS

before the user can use the device?

No. The healthcare tablet includes the jacket so no additional

configuration is required.

Can the customer order and insert a

replacement battery?

The battery must be replaced by an HP Authorized Service

Provider (ASP).



I’ve lost one of the quick release pins for

the healthcare tablet’s hand strap.

Where can I find replacement pins?

The hand strap and supporting quick release pins are not

available as after-market options (AMOs). However,

replacement parts can be ordered from an HP ASP, using the

following spare numbers:

Hand strap: 795176-001

Quick release pin: 795175-001

Does the healthcare tablet support

Connected Standby?

Yes. The healthcare tablet supports Connected Standby.
