Device Manager allows you to make changes to the device properties.

How to open Device Manager and view error codesTo view error codes in Device Manager, follow these steps:

1. Click Start , and enter device manager into the Start Search field.

2. Double-click a device type (for example, double-click Display adapters ) tosee the devices in that category.

3. Right-click the device you want, and then click Properties .

4. Click the General tab to view the device status.

Understanding the Device Manager tabsIn Device Manager click the plus sign ( +) next to a device, right-click aspecific device, and then select Properties . A properties window appears.The properties window has a General tab.

The properties window for devices can have various differnet types of tabsother than the General tab. Some devices may have a Resources tab, aDriver tab, a Details tab, or other tab not listed here.

A description of the device. When you click the Resources tab, the windowin the middle of the tab indicates which resource types are available for theselected device.

NOTE: If the device is experiencing a problem, the type of problem isdisplayed. You may also see a problem code and number witha suggested solution. You can also submit a Windows ErrorReport to Microsoft by clicking Check for solutions, if that buttonis present.

The scroll box at the bottom contains a Conflicting device list . If a conflictis occurring, this list will display an error code.

When Windows successfully detects a device, the Use automatic settings check box is selected. The device should function correctly.

If the resource settings for a device are based on Basic Configuration <n>

(where <n> is any number from 0000 to 0009), it is possible to change theconfiguration by selecting a different Resource setting from the list.

If the settings for the device are not based on a Basic Configuration, click theChange Setting button and manually adjust the resource values. Forexample, to edit the Input/Output Range setting, use these steps:

1. Click the Use automatic settings check box to clear it.

2. Click the Change Setting button.

3. Click the appropriate I/O range for the device.

4. Save the new setting and click OK to exit.

5. Restart the computer for the new settings to be recognized.

Device Manager toolbarUse the Device Manager toolbar to perform various actions to the devices youhave on your system. See the table below.

Device Manager error symbolsDevice Manager uses the following symbols to provide information about aparticular error condition with a specific system device:

Symbol Definition

Shows/Hides Console tree of the Device Manager on the left side ofwindow.

Displays the properties of the device. Indicates if the device is in aproblem state.

Opens the Device Manager (Microsoft Management Console) Helpfiles.

Displays the Device Manager Actions pane, which shows you possibleactions to correct a device problem on the right side of the window.

Scans for hardware changes and problems.

Updates driver software for that device, if available.

Uninstalls this device from your system.

Enables this device on your system.

Symbol Definition

Indicates the device is in a problem state. A device in a problem statecan be functioning. A problem code explaining the problem is displayedfor the device.

Detailed error code informationIn the table below, the suggested resolution for several errors is to update thedriver. For driver, BIOS patches and software updates, use HP driver and softwaredownloads search page . Search for the Model Number for your PC to get a list ofthe available updates.

Indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that isphysically present in the system, consuming resources, but does nothave a protected-mode driver loaded.

On a device resource in Computer properties, indicates that UseAutomatic Settings is not selected for the device and that it wasmanually selected. It does not indicate a problem or a disabled device

state.This indicates that an exact (device-specific) driver is not available, andthat a compatible driver has been installed.

NOTE: To remove a device from device manager, right-click the device

name from the list and then click the Uninstall button.You can alsoupdate a driver from the driver tab of a device Properties page.Double-click the device name to get to the Properties page in DeviceManager, click the Driver tab, and then click the Update Driver button.

Device Manager error codes

Errorcode

Error description Suggested resolution

Code1

Device is not configured correctly To resolve the problem, followthe instructions in the DeviceStatus box. In addition, you may

be able to resolve this issue byremoving the device in DeviceManager, and running the AddNew Hardware wizard fromControl Panel.

Code2

Depending on which device is failing,you may see either of two differentmessages. This code means that thedevice loader (DevLoader) did not loada device. When this device is a RootBus DevLoader (for example, ISAPNP,PCI, or BIOS), the following message isdisplayed: Windows could not load thedriver for this device because the PC isreporting two <type> bus types. (Code2)

When the device is not root busDevLoader, the following message isdisplayed: The <type> device loader(s)for this device could not load the devicedriver. (Code 2)

Try updating the BIOS .

Try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

3 is low on memory or other resources. Device Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device. simply restarting thePC or deleting large files fromthe hard drive may also resolvethis issue.

Code4 INF file for this device is incorrect or theregistry is damaged. For example,the .inf file specifies a field that shouldbe text, but is binary instead.

Try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

If you continue to receive thiserror code, update the driver.

Code5

Device failure due to lack of anarbitrator.

To resolve this error code,update the driver as suggested,try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device

Code6

Conflict between this device andanother device.

Click the Resources tab in thedevice properties to manuallyenter the settings or replace thedevice with one that is Plug andPlay compatible.

Code7

No configuration can be performed onthe device.

If the device works correctly,you do not need to perform anysteps to correct the code. If thedevice does not work correctly,try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitialize

the device.If you continue to receive thiserror code, try updating thedriver.

Code8

Device loader (DevLoader) for a devicecould not be found. For example,the .inf file for the device may refer to amissing or invalid file.

For most cases, the resolutionis to reinstall or update thedriver. As an alternative, tryremoving the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

If you continue to receive thiserror code, contact thehardware manufacturer aboutupdated drivers.

Code8

If the DevLoader is a systemDevLoader, the following text isdisplayed: This device is not workingproperly because Windows cannot loadthe file <name> that loads the driversfor the device.

To fix this problem, perform asystem recovery.

It may be possible to resolvethis error by using DeviceManager to remove the device,and install the device again.

If you continue to receive thiserror code, contact thehardware manufacturer for theproper registry settings.

Code10

Device failed to start (for example, it ismissing or is not working properly). Thismessage can vary greatly because thetext for this message can come from thedriver.

To resolve this error code, makesure the device is attached tothe PC correctly. For example,make sure all cables areconnected firmly and that alladapter cards are inserted intotheir slots fully.

Follow the suggested solutionbutton and update the devicedriver. It may be possible toremove the device and re-detectit automatically.

Code11

Device failure. Try removing and reinstallingthe device, updateing the driver,making sure the device iscompatible with the version ofWindows used.

Code12

Two device are assigned to teh sameresource or the BIOS setting are not

providing the driver with enoughresources.

To resolve this error code,disable or remove one the

devices that is involved. Clickthe Resources tab in the deviceproperties to manually enter thesettings or replace the devicewith one that is Plug and Playcompatible.

Code13

Device failed due to a problem in thedevice driver.

Try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

Code14

Device has a problem that may beresolved by restarting your computer.

Restart the computer.

Code15

Device resources are conflicting withanother device resources.

To resolve this error code, clickthe Resources tab in the deviceproperties to manually enter thesettings or replace the devicewith one that is Plug and Playcompatible.

Code16

Device was not fully detected. When adevice is not fully detected, all of itsresources may not be recorded.

To resolve this error code, clickthe Resources tab in the deviceproperties to manually enter thesettings or replace the device

Hardware is a multiple-function deviceand the .inf file for the device is

providing invalid information on how tosplit the device resources to the childdevices.

Try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart the

computer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

If you continue to receive thiserror code, please contact thehardware manufacturer aboutupdated driver or installationfiles.

Code18

Device needs to be reinstalled. To resolve this issue, follow therecommended solution. If thatdoes not work, try removing thedevice from Device Managerand restart the computer to

reinstall/reinitialize the device.ErrorCode

Error description Suggested resolution

Code19

The registry returned an unknownresult.

To resolve this issue, follow therecommended solution, whichwill run Scanreg.exe.

If this does not resolve theissue, type scanreg/restore froma command prompt.

Finally, remove the device from

Device Manager, and re-detectby installing the device again.

Code20

This code means VxD Loader (Vxdldr)returned an unknown result. Forexample, there could be a versionmismatch between the device driverand the operating system.

To resolve this issue, follow therecommended solution.

If that does not work, tryremoving the device fromDevice Manager and install thedevice again.

Code21

This code means the device has aproblem that may be resolved byrestarting your PC.

To resolve this error code, shutdown Windows, turn off yourPC, then turn it back on.

Code22

This device is disabled. To resolve this error code,enable the device. To do so,right-click the device name indevice manager, select Enable ,and restart the computer.

If this does not work, tryremoving the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

Is the device disabled in theBIOS? Try enabling the devicefrom the BIOS setup utility .

This code means the device loaderdelayed the start of a device and then

failed to inform Windows when it wasready to start the device.

To resolve this error code, verifythe settings for the primary

display adapter in Displayproperties. Try removing theprimary and secondary displayadapters from Device Manager,and then restarting the PC.

Verify that the drivers arecurrent and installed correctly.

For devices other than displayadapters, follow therecommended solution.

If that does not work, tryremoving the device fromDevice Manager and restartingthe PC.

Code24

Device is not present, is not workingproperly, or does not have all its driversinstalled.

To resolve this error code,follow the recommendedsolutions.

If the device still does not work,make sure that the device isconnected to your PC correctly.For example, make sure that allcables are correctly installed, or

that the adapter cards areproperly seated in their slots.

Code25

This problem typically exists only duringthe first and second boots afterWindows Setup copies all the files. Assuch, if this code is identified, it is likelyan incomplete installation.

To resolve this issue, follow therecommended solution.Perfroming a system recoverymay be required.

Code26

This code means a device did not load.There may be a problem in the devicedriver or not all the drivers wereinstalled.

To resolve this error code,follow the recommendedsolution. If this does not work,use Device Manager to removethe device and then restart thePC.

If you continue to receive thiserror code, try updating thedriver.

Code27

This code means the portion of theregistry describing possible resourcesfor a device does not contain validentries. For example, the device ismarked as configurable, but theconfiguration information in the .inf file

To resolve this error code, useDevice Manager to remove thedevice and then restart the PC.

If the device still does not work,try updating the driver.

There may be two hardwaredevices that are jumpered to thesame IRQ. Update thehardware to Plug and Playcompatible versions or correctthe jumper settings.

Windows cannot load the driversrequired for this device.

Update the driver for the device.

If the error continues, the devicemay be incompatible with theversion of Windows you areusing, the device hardware mayhave failed, or the connection tothe device may be bad.

Code32

A driver (service) for this device hasbeen disabled.

The start type for this driver isset to disabled in the registry.

Try removing the device fromDevice Manager and restart thecomputer to reinstall/reinitializethe device.

Code33

Windows cannot determine whichresources are required.

Is the device compatible withthe version of Windows you areusing? You may need to replacethe device with a Plug and Playcompatible device.

Code34

Windows is unable to determine theconfiguration settings for a device youare attempting to install.

To resolve this error code, clickthe Resources tab in the deviceproperties to manually enter thesettings or replace the devicewith one that is Plug and Playcompatible.

Do the following:

1. Remove the device namefrom Device Manager andshut down the computer.

2. Remove the device fromthe computer and thenreconnect it to make surethe connection is good.

3. Turn on the computer.

If the error continues, makesure the device is compatiblewith the version of Windowsbeing used.

Code The device driver cannot be installed Restart the computer. If the

Currently, this hardware device is notconnected to the computer.

This error code requires noaction.

Code46

The device is not accessible becausethe operating system is in the process

of shutting down. The device shouldwork properly when you restart thecomputer.

This error code requires noaction.

Code47

The device is not accessible because itis in safe removal mode, but has not yetbeen uninstalled.

Unplug the device from thecomputer and then plug it backin.

Restart the computer toreactivate the device.

Code48

The software for this device has beenblocked from starting because it isknown to have problems with Windows.

Update the driver or replace thedevice with compatiblehardware.

Code49

Windows cannot start new a devicebecause the registry size limit isexceeded.

Resolve this error by using theDevice Manager to uninstall anyunwanted or unused devices,and then restart thecomputer.You may need toperform a system recovery torestore the registry.
