Future  Bright-‐Smile  Doctor    Ploy Rungsakaolert (Grade 12)

How would you briefly introduce yourself? My name is Ploy. I really like to sleep and spend time on the Internet. So where’s your next destination after you graduate from TCIS? I’m going to attend Srinakharinwirot University (Joint Medical Program with University of Nottingham) Why did you choose this program? What influenced your decision most? I originally wanted to go to the US, but I’ll have to get into a med school after getting my bachelors degree and that’s at least 8 years. This program will only take me 6 years and I’ll still get to spend 3 years abroad so that's mainly why I chose it. I'll also get a degree from both universities so that’s a bonus. How did it feel while waiting for the announcement? How did it feel when you knew you got accepted? The competition was extremely high since they’re only selecting 15 people so I honestly wasn’t expecting anything. When a friend told me that my name was on the list I was really surprised. Any words of advice to underclassmen? Start early on your applications. If you need to write an essay, make sure to have those who are really good at writing look over your essay. If you feel like your dream university or program is out of reach, apply anyway. Don't be lazy when it comes to university applications because you really only have one chance (unless you’re okay with waiting another year) and your essay does matter. What will you miss most about TCIS? I will miss the Class of 2015 definitely. If there’s one thing I love about TCIS, it's the people.

Giggly  Tech-‐xpert  Kyle Lee (Grade 12)

Which university did you get in? Kyoto University 3 Fun Facts: 1. I have eight stitches on my head (I hit my head on the pink wall in LS playground when I fell). 2. I used to be in the class of 2016 when I was in K2. 3. I used to take apart computers and put them back together when I was a kid (10 years old). Daily routine as a senior: Sleep → pass → sleep → pass → study… maybe? Major in…? Why? Civil engineering because I like to take part in the construction and planning of infrastructure. My dream is to build high-speed railroads in Thailand. How did you feel when you got accepted? I feel like my senior year is over! But, it’s not… Here are some advices: DO NOT skip class, kids, because Mr. John and Mr. Simon will hunt you down. Share your love experiences/advices/tips: Don’t date humans if you’re alien. Haha! Why are you interested in Japanese? It began with anime, then I started to really like the language itself.” What are some of your awkward moment(s)? When I didn’t show up to a teacher’s class for a week or two, and I see the teacher in the hallway. Oops. Suggestions on improving TCIS: Involve the student body into the decision-making and offer some new courses like computer science and programming class. Farewell quote: “I have nothing left to say other than enjoy the rest of the school year! You’ll be sad when it ends!”

“To be despised and hated by those I care about was the only way I could keep the secrets of my

heart for you...” –Ethan Lockwood

It was a typical Friday afternoon; students were arriving at the 360 Theatre for the annual drama

production. This year the 360 Theatre was fully packed for first time in history. The lights dimmed to unfold

the story of “Unwanted.” This is set in Thailand and revolves around two telecommunication company

owners and the people who get caught in between. Pattaporn Khrapao begins the story by taking us back to the

beginning when his intention in life is to save enough money to wed the love of his life, Irene Pongtananikorn.

Everything changes when he gets laid off from work. He meets Ethan Lockwood and Christina Leong during

the process of finding a job. Ethan Lockwood is the owner of the leading telecommunications company in all

of Asia, Banana Corporation. A pompous, devious man whose sole purpose in life is to make Christina Leong,

the owner of the rival company, Sungsam Enterprises, feels his presence. Christina is the polar opposite of

Ethan, but her company is in the verge of going bankrupt due to the new Thai government taxation law.

Khrapao gets hired as Christina’s secretary, and he accepts the job. However, because of money, Khrapao

decides to take the offer from Ethan as a spy in Sungsam. When Christina finds out his betrayal, his fate takes

an abrupt turn. With a few more characters, this story intertwines with deception, betrayal, and hidden agenda

Mr.  David  Jolly  (Our Serene Environmental Science Teacher) By: Purichaya (Por) Eiamkanchanalai

Why did you decide to come to work in Thailand? I was also able to visit Thailand last year, and I felt that it was nice, so I decided to move here. I also came here, because I wanted to be in a new country. Also, Mr. John hired me, so I moved. Why does environmental science interest you? I have always been interested in science. I feel like environmental science is an important science because it’s about the environment and all the living things on Earth, including us. What things always make you happy? Playing sports, traveling, and eating always make me happy. What things will make you angry? I don’t really get angry. However, I think the only thing that will make me angry is to see people getting treated unfairly. What are your hobbies? I don’t really have any hobbies here in Thailand. However, in the U.S. my hobbies were playing tennis and/or soccer. I also like to read. Some of my favorite books are Crime and Punishment, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Dexter. How do you feel towards TCIS? I think TCIS is nice. I like how the students here are nice, respectful, and hardworking. I feel a lot more appreciated at TCIS than at my previous school. What do you like about Thailand? Any favorite places or food? I like how Thai people also seem so polite and generous. My favorite places here are Chiang Mai and Krabi. I also like Thai food, but it’s hard for me to get used to it, because it is quite spicy. I used to have Thai food in the U.S., but it is different from eating Thai food here in Thailand.

Ms.  Kalli  (Our Ambitious High School Social Studies Teacher) By: Purichaya (Por) Eiamkanchanalai

Why did you decide to come to work in Thailand? I decided to come work in Thailand, because I wanted to do a combination of traveling and teaching. Thailand also has elephants, which I love so much! Why are you passionate about history? Why does it interest you? For me, history is one, big mystery. I think that is really cool to understand what people went through before. History also makes us who we are today, which really interests me. Why do you like softball? When did you start playing? I started playing softball when I was 6 years old. I feel like it’s a sport that you have to be talented in to play. Softball isn’t just about playing; it’s also about being strategic. It teaches us so many things that you can’t always learn in a classroom, for example discipline, how to deal with failure, and pushing yourself past your limits. What are your hobbies? My hobbies are softball and riding horses. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Thai soccer/football; I find it fun. How do you feel towards TCIS? I think TCIS is like one, big family. I like how close everyone is; it’s like everyone has a connection to each other, which is really nice. I also like how the students feel comfortable to come up to us teachers. What do you like about Thailand? Any favorite places or food? I like how diverse Thailand is. You have Bangkok, which is an up-coming city, then you have the islands. You can go to the North to the jungles or even go to the beaches to relax. I also love the elephants here so much. My favorite place so far is Krabi because it has a really nice beach. My favorite Thai food is Pad Thai, but it has to be our school’s soi, though. How do you feel when you hear students speak in foreign languages? If I hear them speak foreign languages in class that is definitely not okay. If they are using it to help explain, then it is acceptable, but if they use it for inappropriate matters, it is not okay. Outside of the classroom, I find it really inspiring, because the students are learning three languages at a high school level, and most people in the U.S. already have trouble learning one language. The students here also inspire me to learn new languages. I am currently learning a little bit of Thai and Spanish because of it.

Meet  Ning  (The New, Cute Freshie)

Why did you move to TCIS? I moved to TCIS, because my dad wanted me to be better in Chinese and English. How do you feel about TCIS’s environment? I feel strange to TCIS’s environment because I came from an all-girls school. Since TCIS is a co-ed school, I wasn’t used to it, and it took some time to adapt. What do you think is the best feature of TCIS? I think the best feature of TCIS is the Chinese curriculum here. Ever since I moved to TCIS, my Chinese has improved, and I can speak more Chinese than before. Was it difficult when you first moved to TCIS? If so, why? Yes, it was difficult. I had to catch up on the learning and also make new friends at the same time. The juggle between these two things wasn’t easy for me. Are you enjoying TCIS so far? I think TCIS is so-so, because I am used to having more events where students participate in. I would like TCIS to have more events where students will be able to interact more often too. What do you miss most about your previous school? I miss the activities and events that my previous school hosted, for example sports day, Phud Chim ป จฉ ม, Dok Ruk Ban Day ว นดอกร กบาน, etc.

Meet  Willy  (Our New Forward from the Class of 2018)

Why did you move to TCIS? I moved to TCIS, because I want to meet new friends and improve my Chinese skills. How do you feel about TCIS’s environment? I think TCIS has a really good environment, which is suitable for learning new languages. We also have lots of Taiwanese students in our school, which helps me improve my Chinese even more. How does it feel to be part of the U17 soccer team? It felt really good to be a part of the soccer team. The whole team was great. Everyone treated me really nicely, even when I was the only freshman in the whole team. I had lots of fun and also made many improvements. I would like to thank all of the members of the soccer team: Mr. Wes, P’Steven, P’Pon, P’Sun, P’Pooh, P’Pech, P’Thomas, P’Shinya, P’Pond, P’Jason, and P’Lee. Was it difficult when you first moved to TCIS? If so, why? Yes, it wasn’t easy moving schools. On the first day, most of the people in my grade didn’t even talk to me. I spent the entire week or so walking alone. Therefore, it really was hard for me, since I had to quickly make friends. Are you enjoying TCIS so far? Yes, I am definitely enjoying TCIS. TCIS has really good teachers and the soccer field is just so cool. What do you miss most about your previous school? I miss my friends from my previous school most. We were friends since first grade, so it was really sad and hard for me to say goodbye to them. It would be really sad to not be able to meet them in school anymore.

This year’s dance greeted us with the title: BLACKOUT and the clever slogan: this time you’ll remember. Kudos to Verona, Jacky, and Ting Ting for spearheading the organization of the dance and coming up with a catchy paradox for the title. The dance went incredibly well this year. The reception was guarded by Mr. A, the warden, who made sure people who entered the dance are safe and unarmed. Inside, you’ll be greeted by a glow-in-the-dark painting station with the sign of EAT PARTY REPEAT. After you’ve gotten your face painted, you can settle down at the lounge area where snacks and drinks are available. Once you have rested up, enter the dance floor with the mesmerizing music from guest DJ AKARA and DJ NARZ, and epilepsy-inducing lighting.

The dance floor was empty at first, but gradually filled up later on. People who didn’t know how to dance did their best and gave way to those that knew. The highlight of this year’s dance is once again the Dance Club members and Nick, the senior. May, Si Eun, Dear, Noon, and Phoebe, started out with a powerful dance with strong, confident motions of their limbs. The K-pop synchronized dancing game is real! Hong, the flaming sophomore, also did an improvised dance of his own that left the audience in awe. However, the real star of this dance is Nick. His sick improvised dance is strong and masculine that it drew out the inner fan girl of his classmates and underclassmen.

  College  Applications

By Papop (Woody) Tanglaocharoen

1. Make a plan/list Having a plan is always an advantage; so start making a list of colleges you are interested in and do some research about them. You can also list the colleges by your top choice or by their admission difficulty. If your list of school is too long, you may want to narrow it down and do some more research on those schools.

2. Do some research on those Colleges When you start your college application, most colleges will ask you why did you choose their schools; hence, make sure you know what programs are you interested in and why did you choose those programs.

3. Safety-School vs. Reach-School Students are more likely to apply for 6 to 8 colleges, and it’s highly suggested for you to

apply for 3-4 safety schools and 3-4 reach schools. It is important to have the safety-schools because you might not get into the reach-schools, and it will troublesome if you don’t have any schools admitted. But still, don’t be discouraged to apply for the reach-schools.

4. Finish the test requirements by the end of Junior Year Prepare your TOEFL and SAT/ACT test before your Junior Year because after that you will have to prepare for college essay and college application; you will have much less work if you are done with the Standardized tests before the end of Junior Year.

5. Prepare to ask the teachers for letters of recommendation Teachers are always busy with teaching students and grading students’ homework and tests, however, you also need teachers to write letters of recommendation, so start early and ask the teachers politely for the letters of recommendation. Also, don’t forget to give them the thank-you notes!

6. Begin your essay Start writing your essay about an event or thing that changed your life and improve the essay constantly by getting advice from your English teachers or counselors. You can also make a two-pages Resume to keep tracks of your personal experience and achievements; it will help your personal statement essay too.

Freshmen Chill out! You just begin your high school year, so get use to high school life and consider which subjects will you take for the next three years. Sophomore Start reviewing SAT/ACT and TOEFL, and take the tests at the end of the year; by the way, you have to apply about 3 months earlier for those tests because the seats will be mostly full after that. Juniors Keep studying your SAT/ACT and finish the test by the end of Junior Year. Also, start your college research and college essays, and remember... procrastination is a bad idea. Seniors Finish all of your college essays and college application before January 15th, keep track of all the colleges you’ve applied, and always check your email. Though, don’t forget to enjoy every moment of your last high school year.

7. Counselors, Teachers, and Seniors are your friends Don’t hesitate to ask these people about college application because these people have the

experience about college application and they will give you their personal suggestions.

7. The Cost of College Application Remember that you need a lot of money to get the college application done. Here are quick lists of what you may need to pay for a college application: Admission fees ($75), SAT/ACT score sending, TOEFL score sending, and Mailing fees.

8. Last but not least… Never draw a limit on yourself! Don’t ever give up before you start! Believe in yourself and believe in your dream!

Music as Emotions

Happy “Happy” - Never Shout Never Album: The Summer (2009) The title of the song speaks for itself. I first heard it through an internet radio website called 8tracks.com. This website allows user to create playlists of their own and sharing them afterwards to the public. Not only is the song tune very optimistic, its lyrics are sweet as well. This song made me smile, so I hope you’ll do the same as you get to listen to it.

Nostalgic “Talk” - Kodaline Album: In a Perfect World (2013)

With a soft melody, “Talk” is surprisingly soothing, with a gloomy touch. It reminds you of all the things you don’t want to remember, but also pats you on the back at the same time. The song reveals memories of broken promises and preventable mistakes. Kodaline is extremely professional in setting a melancholy atmosphere, evoking pain of the past. Other recommended songs by them are “All I Want” and “High Hopes”.

Loving “Enchanted” - Taylor Swift Album: Speak Now (2010)

Do you admire anyone? If you do, you can probably easily connect to this song. As you close your eyes and listen to the introduction, you’ll feel as if you’re sitting under the night sky. Each and every word expressed will dance upon your ears, twinkling with love. The lyrics reflect upon the first impression of meeting someone, who magically left you feeling ‘enchanted’. Like many listeners, you’ll be left in awe once you hear, “please don’t be in love with someone else, please don’t having someone waiting on you”, which is the best relatable line in my opinion.

Broken “Lost My Pieces” - Hashimoto Yukari Album: Toradora! OST Even though this is an instrumental song, it stabs you directly, bringing out your sorrow and despair. What the sound of violin does to you in the song, is making you feel as if you’re cluelessly running around, feeling shattered. Weirdly enough, the ending leaves you hanging off of a cliff. It abandoned you with space, allowing you to decide your own resolution. Toradora!, the animation which allowed me to meet this song, is also encouraged for any anime fan.

Music as Genre

Pop “Bring Me the Night” - Sam Tsui & Kina Grannis Album: Make It Up (2013) It is rare for me to find a duet that I enjoy listening to, but this is one of the few. Sam Tsui and Kina Grannis are both youtube musicians. Their voices beautifully compliments each other, gently bringing out the strengths of one another. The way they end some of the sentences in a higher pitch creates a relaxed comfort. Definitely, the song will leave you with delightful vibes. Pop-Rock “Dancing in the Moonlight” - Toploader (a cover; original by King Harvest) Album: Onka’s Big Moka (1999) In an important scene of a romance called A Walk to Remember, the song was played and it immediately grabbed my attention. With its melodious tune, the beat is simple enough for anyone to tap their feet along. Originally, it is a song by the King Harvest from 1972. Twenty-seven years later, in 1999, Toploader successfully did a cover of the song. Its popularity return as the song climbed up and entered the Top 10 list of UK Singles Chart. I highly recommend this song if you’re looking for a entertaining rhythm! Indie-Pop “Laura Palmer” - Bastille Album: Bad Blood (2013) Described as having “blood-racing beats”, Bastille successfully creates a song filled with powerful throbbing drum sounds. Its excitement is excellent for pumping anyone up. The strong echoes in the song will leave you with adrenalized shivers. Continued…

Indie-Folk “Bloom” - Paper Kites Album: Beginnings (2010) There’s no better way to listen to this song than to lie down on the soft grass under the blue sky in a good weather. To describe this song, I would surely say it is one of the most relaxing sensation I’ve ever experienced. More importantly, if you’re an acoustic addict, you’ll enjoy the sound of fingerstyle guitar. Including whistles and bird chirps, the singer’s voice offers you warmth as the background melody guides you into nature. Instrumental “Lu Xiao Yu” - Jay Chou Album: Secret OST To me, this song holds the memory of a character in Secret. She discovered the dangerous secret of how to travel in time. She takes a trip to the future, stumbling across Jay Chou, who becomes her love interest. Sadly, there are limits and restrictions to her journey. Due to their attachment, the two struggle to meet again. This piece carry fragments of Xiao Yu, who dedicated her little strength to extend her stay in the future.

“The Little Shop of Hopes and Dreams” is a complicated story of the life of Nicole Harrison,

the main character. Nicole is stuck choosing between improving her love life or saving her career as a wedding proposal planner. The fact that the person she is in love with is her client’s boyfriend, and the bad part she is also their wedding planner. The boyfriend also likes her since the incident during New Year’s that make matters worse. Not to mention that if she fails, her company would go down to ruins. It’s a story full of suspense with what Nicole chooses to do and how she does it.

This book is a perfect fit for those who love the suspense of thrillers, but also love the romance side in chick lit. This book would receive a four star rating. It’s pretty fun for the most part, until Nicole starts to worry too much. There are parts where she made her situation more complicated than it should be, but it would be no fun if there were no problems. This book would also be a great enjoyment for those who love to read chick lit or works done by Sophie Kinsella. If you plan on reading the book, I do hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!
