MARCH 2016 HOWARD C. REICHE COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Reiche Report
The signs of spring are beginning to appear. The days are getting longer,
trees are beginning to bud, I even sighted some flowers popping up around
the school grounds…. which means Spring Assessment season is upon us!
Many Portland Public School students are preparing to take the Maine
Educational Assessments (MEA). This year students in grades 3, 4 and 5
will be taking an assessment called eMPowerME. This assessment will
provide information about the academic progress of our students, schools,
and the state as a whole. These tests measure the progress of Maine’s
students toward the content standards adopted for Maine students in
literacy and math. This assessment can help educators and parents to
understand how well the students are achieving and if they need additional
support to become proficient at their grade level. In addition, this
assessment also provides a data point for identification in other programs
such as gifted/talented.
Both state and federal laws require that all students participate. Schools are
accountable for achieving a participation rate of 95% or higher. This test
will be delivered online for all students. Some students may qualify for
accommodations, which will be followed according to the student’s
individualized educational plan or Section 504 plan.
Reiche students in grades 3-5 will be taking the tests in the weeks of
March 28 & April 4, 2016
To ensure a successful testing experience for your child, we are asking for
your support every day. Please:
Ensure that your child attends school every day!
These tests are required by the state and must be completed by each
student, make-ups are time consuming and no fun at all!
Help ensure a good night’s sleep for your child.
Make sure your child is in class on time, 8:10.
Dismissal is at 2:50, as usual, except Wednesday at 1:50.
Please notify us if your child is absent for any reason.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact myself, Mrs.
Bobinsky or Mrs. Keegan at the school (874-8175) or via email.

Field Trip Grants
Reiche 5th graders will be visiting the Museum of Science in Boston thanks to a Google Field Trip award. The award will cover admission and the Omni Theater for all students & staff and it will also contribute $1000 towards transportation. This is a wonderful opportunity for Reiche School. Reiche is also the proud recipient of a Bug Light Foundation award of $1500. The funds will support two field trips for all K students, one to Pineland Farm mid spring and another to the Wildlife Park in Gray.
TITLE I PROGRAMS
At the Reiche PTO meeting on December 3rd, Angela Atkinson Duina presented
an overview of the Title I Program for the Portland Public School District.
Title I refers to Title I Part A of the US Elementary and Secondary Education
Act, a federal law that provides additional funding to schools with high
percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children
meet expected academic standards. Started in 1965, it is one of the largest federal
funding programs.
7 of 17 Portland Public Schools receive this federal funding. PPS prioritizes pre-
K, elementary and middle schools to receive funds. $450,000 federal dollars are
offered to Reiche through this program which supports;
- Summer School
- WIN: What I need intervention block
- Additional teachers & Ed Techs
- Community Coordinator
- Reading Intervention technology
- Book It Home
- Math Night
- Aim: All kids make at least 1 year progress, and, if in intervention, more than a
year’s progress
Reiche's Title I School Wide Plan is revised each year by administrators, teachers
and parents. Schools gather feedback on their work throughout the year and use
this to adjust their plans. If you’d like to be a part of the planning activities
contact a teacher leader or the PPS Title I School Improvement Coordinator
Angela Atkinson Duina at [email protected]; 207-874-8100.
Because parents are a major influence on children's learning and education, Title I
schools are required to actively engage parents in a two-way conversation about
their child's education and the school activities funded by Title I.
What does parent engagement look like?
1. Supporting your child's learning
2. Partnering with your child's teacher and school
3. Advocating for school improvement
4. Serving in decision-making and leadership roles
Thank you to Angela for presenting an overview of this very important program!

SIDE BY SIDE PROJECTS, MURRAY AND
PROVENCHER’S 4/5
Over the past two weeks, we have worked as a team to create a movie about inventions during World War II. First, we researched our invention. Then, selected images that were about our invention. After that, we made a storyboard. We put our images into iMovie and recorded our voices. After the slideshows were put together, we got to make movie posters. Overall, the project was great! - Gabe Lopez What did you find most challenging about this project? Colette: Combining everyone’s ideas and creating something cohesive. Jane: Making the storyboard was hard. Asha: Working in a group! Charles: I was most challenged by trying to get along with my teammates and organizing the storyboard. Lude: Practicing and memorizing our cue cards. Liam: Working as a team was the most challenging part for me because everyone doesn’t always agree. I think we are getting along better though. We all wanted to stop being annoyed and yelling at each other, and so we did!
What did you find most interesting? Cyrus: I learned a lot. I’m most interested in the fact that the VW Beetle was based on a prototype that Hitler stole from a Jewish scientist. Farhan: Making the IMovie. Elias: The most interesting thing was arranging the images and information on our storyboard and in IMovie. I will most remember how hard my teammates and I worked. Greta: Using the computers was the most interesting thing we’ve done and the teamwork was hard to figure out. Gabe: The more interesting learning was about the giant headphones that were used before radar to listen for warships, boats, and planes. Thank you to Cat and Terry for your patience, knowledge, and
artistic expertise!
THIRD GRADE NEWS
We have finished multiplication and
division and are now starting to learn
about fractions.
Next time you have pizza, ask your
third grader what fraction they would
like to eat! We are becoming Non-
Fiction experts!
We have been studying reading non-
fiction texts (ask us what a main idea
is!) and writing a story to teach our
classmates about a topic we are
experts on. Molly Maps has been
coming in to teach us all about
maps! We are learning a lot about the
city of Portland and certain city
landmarks.
We have started swimming! Please
make sure to send your child with a
bathing suit, towel, and extra dry
clothing.
The Book fair was held last week and, once again,
thanks to an anonymous donor, each Reiche student
was able to receive a free book of their choosing!
Many thanks to parent, Elsa Rowe, for organizing this
year’s Fair. In addition to selecting and working with
the book supplier, Letterpress Books, she organized
volunteers, arranged the set up, wrote communications
and provided joy to all the children at Reiche.
THE BOOK FAIR WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

Math Night Date Change!
The new date for “Chilling with Geometry” math night is March
31 from 5:00-6:30. It should be a fun night for parents and students in all grades. Participants will learn about shapes and create 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional objects. They will make shape mobiles and quilt squares. There will be plenty of games including Shape Bingo, Sets, and even a matching shape game in Spanish! Each student will be able to choose a small geometry item, from a nice selection received through a grant, to take home. There will also be drawings to win bigger prizes that are different shapes. For example, we have a nice basketball sphere that someone will win.
Grades 3, 4 and 5 Get Moving!
Starting on March 1st the 3, 4, 5 classes will be taking part in the UNICEF Kid Power Program. UNICEF Kid Power gives kids the power to save lives.
By getting active with the UNICEF Kid Power Band, kids go on missions to learn about new cultures and earn points. Each child and teacher will be given a Power Band to wear during the month of March. Syncing the bands shows the students how active they have been and earns points.
Points unlock funding from partners and UNICEF will deliver lifesaving packets of therapeutic food to severely malnourished children around the world.
The more kids move, the more points they earn, the more lives they save.
Donors Choose Alert!
Ms. Provencher has a new project: “A Focus on Learning”. She is looking to acquire the following supplies for her classroom: 25 noise canceling headphones block out noise, 5 noise reduction earmuffs, latch boxes, and markers to replace our aging, dried up supply. Use the code "empower" until March 18th and Donors Choose will match your donation! http://www.donorschoose.org/project/a-focus-on-learning/1907002/
