How Will We Create Interoperability? The Internet of Things, intelligent buildings, wearable technology, software defined data centers: these topics dominate our newsfeeds as both professionals and consumers. While we hear extensively about these breakthrough technologies, we hear little about interoperability. As the connected world becomes a reality, the truly transformational technologies may not be the ones – smart cities, smart cars, smart buildings that we are hearing about today but rather those that allow all of these technologies to effectively communicate with one another. Cloud Computing The Sky's Limit

Shifting computer power to the cloud brings many benefits—but don’t ignore therisks

ELECTRICITY was once generated where it was used; now it comes from the grid. So it is with

computing power, once the province of mainframes and personal computers, and now moving

into the “cloud”—networks of data centres that use the internet to supply all kinds of services,

from email and social networks to data storage and analysis.

The rise of cloud computing is rapid, inexorable and causing huge upheaval in the tech

industry. The old guard is suffering: this week’s $67 billion merger between Dell and EMC,

makers of computers and storage devices respectively, was a marriage forced by the rise of the

cloud (see article). Disruptive newcomers are blooming: if Amazon’s cloudcomputing unit were

a standalone public company, it would probably be worth almost as much as Dell and EMC

combined.

World According to Gartner: 3 Ways to Modernize Your DataCenter by Todd Boucher

How To Follow Gartner’s Advice: Make your Data Center Behave Like A Factory.

The ability to modernize your data center is a challenge we all face in the data center space. Withthe growing data demands, managing growth requires the ability to manage capacity and maintainuptime while ensuring a strong strategy for the future.

In Gartner’s recent report, “Five Reasons Why You Need a Different Strategy for the Digital World,”they argue that businesses must rethink “the personality, structure, and role of data centers.” Gartner identifies two forces – the Nexus of Forces and the Internet of Things – as the drivers ofthis need to change.

Lighting and Interoperability: Top Barriers to Adoption

Despite the demonstrated benefits of intelligent lighting systems, barriers to adoption of these systems still exist, including lighting and interoperability with otherbuilding systems. The successful intelligent lighting system requires building systems that operate on a common, standardized infrastructure. Deeper levels ofinteroperability can deliver tremendous system flexibility and performance. In the 2nd segment in this series of #LEDGTalks videos, Todd Boucher talks with Brian Chemel of Digital Lumens about the barriers to smart lighting. Watch the Video

Growth Continues in North American Data Center Markets by Yevgeniy Sverdik

While top data center markets like New York, Silicon Valley, and Dallas get most of the attention, a lot of growth is taking place in markets considered secondary.Markets like Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, and, more recently, Reno, Nevada, are seeing a lot of multitenant data center construction and takeup. There are marketspecific characteristics at play, but core demand drivers are the same across the board, according to a recent report on the North American datacenter market by Jones Lang La Salle, a commercial real estate firm. Money Talks: Bottomline driving sustainable data center demand by Scharon Harding

Channel players say despite the growing popularity of being ecoconscious, when it comes to energy efficient datacenters, end users only care if it affects theirown invoice.

Global warming, the need for reducing carbon footprints and energy usage are not new concepts for enterprises. But as sustainability becomes top of mind fordifferent people for various reasons, when it comes to the business of technology, any changes, even those environmentally conscious, are done with somethingelse in mind: money. The case is the same for the datacenter.

Everything You Need to Know About the Vast Undersea Network thatMakes the Internet Work by Andrea Peterson

Russians submarines and spy ships are "aggressively operating" near the undersea cables that are the backbone ofthe global Internet — worrying some U.S. intelligence and military officials who fear the Russians may sabotage themif a conflict arises, the New York Times reports.

For all the talk about the "cloud," practically all of the data shooting around the world actually relies on a series oftubes to get around -- a massive system of fiber-optic cables lying deep underneath the oceans.

The network connects every continent other than Antarctica, carrying emails, photos, videos and emoji around theglobe. Here's what that looks like in the style of a vintage maritime map, courtesy of TeleGeography:

Obama Takes On Climate Change: The Rolling Stone Interview by Jeff Goodell

In Alaska, President Obama was in a very good mood. He visited the state in late summer to draw attention to the looming climate catastrophe the world faces, but with the exception of one big policy speech when he sounded as apocalyptic as any hempgrowing activist, he spent most of his three days up north beaming."He's happy to be out of his cage," one aide joked. Others credited the buoyant U.S. economy or the fact that the president had just learned that he had securedenough votes to protect the hardfought nuclear deal with Iran from being derailed by Senate Republicans.
