Have my cognitive abilities changed during the last five years? Will my intelligence increase over time? Will I be the same person when I am eighty? These are questions we all ask our-selves. The module will transport the learners through their past and future by looking at the three major developmental stages which are childhood, adolescence and adulthood. It also covers topics on puberty, sexuality, adult ma-turity, lifestyle changes, the family life cycle, and retirement.

The module looks at a number of theories such as the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, the humanistic approach and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). Learners will be taught the fundamental skills of a therapist such as listening, attending and responding skills. Learners will further learn questioning techniques to be able to interact with clients. This module will provide learners with the understanding and applicability of psychotherapy and counselling to successfully implement this professionally and in other areas of development such as personal, life, relationships, workplace and family.

Learning from leading positive psychologistsOn the list of our teaching community are Dr Ilona Boniwell, Dr Robert Biswas- Diener and graduates of Martin Seligman’s Master of Applied Positive Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Small Teacher to Student RatioSmall Teacher to Student Ratio. Studies have shown that a small teacher to student ratio dramatically increases learning effectiveness. Reducing class sizes and the total number of students that a faculty member is responsible for teaching in a semester leads to significant improvements in student outcomes.
ARE WE DIFFERENT?
HOW
11Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress, it means “bounc-ing back” from difficult experiences. It builds on research findings from four relevant fields of study, namely cognitive behavioural therapy, resilience, post traumatic growth and positive psychology. In this 2-day interactive workshop, learners will understand how resilience, hope and optimism interact and affect each other. It also explores the role of cognition and think-ing styles in our experience of resilience. The workshop helps to improve learners’ coping strategies during crisis and ability to make good decisions even under stressful environment. The programme also aims to help you develop the ability to thrive and flourish, rather than just to survive, in the face of inevitable difficulties and uncertainties. In a nutshell, the workshop helps the learners to build their ‘resilience mus-cles’ through identifying their strengths, social support networks, sources of positive emotions and previous experiences of resilience.
RESILIENCE WORKSHOP
12Social Psychology studies individuals in the social context. It is the study of how and why people think, feel and do the things they do depending on the social situation they are in. Social psychology focuses on how psycholog-ical factors influence our interactions with oth-ers. We all have given in to peer pressure at some point in our life; but why should this be the case? You will learn topics that would address issues on social influence, group processes, prejudice and discrimination, aggression, attitudes, stereotypes, conformity and compliance and other topics that influence how you are as an individual.
SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
13Psychotherapy Practice and Ethics introduces the importance of professional behaviour under the Ethics Code. This module aims to teach the standards of conduct, performance and ethics on your role as a therapist. Topics will include ethical issues such as confidentiality, informed consent, dual relationships, termina-tion and referral. It will guide you into making informed and reasonable decisions for your client, to behave with honesty and integrity and to ensure that personal bias and beliefs do not interfere with therapy. Other ethical issues such as sexual harassment, discrimination, privacy and harm are also discussed.
