Ken- means “blade”

Kendo- way of the sword

Kendogi- Kendo uniform

Kenjutsu- swordsmanship

Do- means “the way”

Gi- means “garment”

Jutsu- means “training”

Bogu

- protective armor consisting of the Men, Do, Tare, Kote

Shinai

- bamboo practice sword

- in between fushi (nodes) represent Tem (Heaven), Chi (Earth), Jin (Person)

- 5 nodes symbolize Gokoku Houjou (sacred crops & grains of Ancients) 1. Kome - rice 2. Mugi - wheat 3. Awa - foxtail 4. Kibi - millet 5. Mame - legume

Tenugui

- cotton towel wrapped around the head under the “men”

- where ryu (school), clan, family, dojo (training place) and personal symbols etched in Japanese Khoin and/or Chinese Tensho are written in calligraphy

Darth Vader’s Helmet and Face Mask

- was based on a Samurai’s kabuto, shikoro, mengu & yodare kake (head armor, neck guard, face armor & throat guard)

- Kendo was invented so that sons of Samurais (Warrior Class) & their Daimyos (Lords or Masters) can practice safely kenjutsu or swordsmanship without hurting each other
