2. Long term Vision and ObjectivesDescribe your long term (20 year) vision for the new plantingThe new planting will be well established and there will be thinning for firewood which will be mainly birch, for firewood. Fauna especially woodland birds from the adjacent upland oak SSSI will establish in the new planting. The permissive right of way will continue to be used by the local community.Set out the objectives for the new planting1. Provide a regular supply of fuelwood to heat the owner’s home2. Extend the upland oak SSSI to increase the area of woodland habitat especially for woodland birds eg
pied flycatchers, woodpeckers3. Keep open permissive right of way
3. Potential impacts of new planting (include Glastir layers, public rights of way and wayleaves)
Glastir layer/ Public right of way/Wayleave
Description of layer in new planting
Is there special guidance for this layer
How will the GWC layer be dealt with (in accordance with UKFS)
Is consultation required for this layer
What consultation/additional information is attached to this GWC plan
SSSI & 300m buffer The new planting is adjacent to an upland oak SSSI
No – consult NRW Leave open ground under the canopy around all 15 standing scattered trees (10 in total – 5 oak, 5 ash) and deadwood within 20m buffer of SSSI. Plant at clumping spacing within 20m of SSSI buffer.
At present consultation is required for all GWC schemes in SSSI buffers
NRW consultation attached
Woodland: Habitat network
Habitat network indicates good location for new planting which connects habitats
No – woodland is encouraged
The new planting is an extension of the upland oak SSSI
No No consultation
Historic Environment: Historic landscape
New planting is <5Ha in an Historic Landscape
Historic landscape report on Archwilio
The new planting is adjacent to an existing upland oak woodland and fits well into the surrounding landscape
No No consultation
National Parks New planting area is in National Park (<2Ha)
No The new planting will be planted next to an existing ancient wood and is not visible from any council road.
No No consultation required as site is <2Ha (below EIA threshold)
4. Design of New PlantingBrief description of new planting site
The new planting is on an upland, semi-improved acid grassland which was used for sheep grazing at 350m asl and on a podzolic soil. There is poor fencing around the new planting area.
Pre-planting ground preparation
No ground preparation is required prior to planting.
Design of new planting 50% sessile oak, 30% downy birch, 10% rowan, 5% hawthorn, 5% hazel. The oak will be planted on higher ground to the east and in the centre of the new planting in groups; the downy birch, rowan and shrubs will be planted in clumped groups adjacent to the SSSI
Type of planting stock and size of trees/shrubs
The trees and shrubs will be 1+1 nursery stock (bare rooted); size of the trees – 40-60cm; size of shrubs – 30-45cm
Tree protection – what type of tree shelters/spiral guards will be used and why?
All trees will be protected with spiral guards and canes; shrubs will be protected with shrub shelters and stakes.
Fencing (livestock) The fencing must be in compliance with the Glastir fencing specification. There will be new fencing around the new planting
Deer protection (if an issue) No
Open ground There will be 2m open ground left open along the existing permissive right of way; thee will be no planting under the 10 mature trees adjacent to the SSSI. The open ground is scattered and less than 0.1Ha and cannot be mapped out. There will still be 1,600 trees/Ha in the new planting.
Timing of new planting The trees and shrubs will be planted in November-December 2015. Additional information for the ownerThe owner needs to contact the tree nursery and tree planting contractor in September-October 2015 to ensure the trees and shrubs from the tree nursery are reserved and the planting contractor is available to do the tree planting.
5. Maintenance and monitoring of new planting site during 12 year GWC planMaintenance
OperationWhat needs to be maintained? Who will maintain the new planting site? When will the maintenance operation be
undertaken?Control of vegetation around trees
Control vegetation (especially grasses, bramble) around the trees by using herbicide
Owner will be using planting contractor (with spraying certification)
Twice annually in May and August until the trees have established (3-4 years).
Tree replacement Dead trees in the new planting will be tagged and will be replaced with the same
tree species
Agent Tag trees in the autumn; replace trees from November-March annually until all trees have been planted at the full stocking rate (1,600
trees/Ha)Fencing Check fencing around new planting and
repair any damage to ensure stock are excluded
Owner Annually for 12 months
Tree protection Check all treeshelters are secure and upright and the guards are properly protecting the
trees. Vegetation eg grasses need to be removed from inside the treeshelters.
Owner Annually
Removal of tree protection
Remove tree guards when all the trees have established and tree stems cannot no longer
be damaged by rabbits and voles.
Owner Between Years 6-8
Rides and paths through wood
Strim permissive right of way Owner Annually
6.Additional stakeholder engagement
Consultee ResponseLocal residents who use the permissive right of way for dogwalking
The owners have already discussed the new planting with local residents who walk the permissive right of way – there is no opposition to the new planting and several residents are very supportive of the project.
