Step 2: Display the results Make sure the Academic Journals tab is selected. Check the focus, length and type of article. Notice that the first 3 articles are short. One is a Letter to the Editor which may not be very valuable for research. The last article is lengthy and has graphics. You should select a LENGTHY article.

Step 4: Copy/paste the bibliographic information Click SHOW DETAILS to display the author’s name. Highlight the title, publication title, volume, issue, date, pages and author. Then copy (Edit > copy). Open your wordprocessing program and paste (Edit > paste) into a document. Save and keep for later. Step 7: Check the citations in the list Make sure you have selected the right list by checking the existing citation. The only citation in the list should be a book citation.

Step 8: Create a new citation to add to the list In the drop down menu (Select a citation type), select Journal (because you are creating a scholarly journal periodical citation). To add a citation to your list, click “Create Citation.”

Step 9: Confirm the journal type This screen asks you to confirm that you do want to cite a scholarly journal article. Make sure the article you found is NOT from a magazine.

Step 10: Identify the format of the journal article Since this is a journal article from a subscription database that you have accessed through the campus network or from home, the format is ONLINE.

Step 11: Specify other article details Since you accessed this online using the subscription database, check “retrieved from an online database.” This is a regular periodical article from a subscription database, select “An article”

Step 12: Start inputting the data Type in the journal title (use initial capitals and remove “The” -- if the journal title contains it). Type in the author’s name and click Add.

Step 13: Type in the rest of the data 1.  Change the title words to

initial capitals. 2.  Type in the page numbers.

You have to add an ending number so 55(5) becomes 55-9 (5 pages: 55, 56, 57, 58, 59).

3.  Type in the Volume number (the number BEFORE the period in 36.2

4.  Type in the Issue number (the number AFTER the period in 36.2

5.  Do NOT select the month from the drop down menu unless needed.

6.  Type in the publication year. 7.  Type in the Database name:
