You can't use an ordinary Ethernet cable - you need a cross-over cable.

By creating a Homegroup you can share files through a local network.

See here for instructions on Windows 7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-

us/windows7/products/features/homegroup and here for Windows 8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-

us/windows-8/homegroup-from-start-to-finish.

Create your homegroup on Windows 7 and select the categories you wish to share. Also, make sure you

give homegroup users the correct permissions. Then join the homegroup on Windows 8. You will need to

type in the password created in Windows' 7 homegroup. Read "join a homegroup" in the instructions. To

just share a specific folder using homegroup, right click on the folder and select Share with > Homegroup.

Now you'll be able to view files on one computer using the other and in the same way copy and paste them

through network.

If you just want to do a file transfer once, remember to undo the sharing settings. It is not recommended to

have all of your folders shared via network, even though homegroup is supposed to be password

protected.

Hope this helps

Read here and in particular note the last sentence of the first

paragraph: "Owing to the inclusion of Auto-MDIX capability, modern

implementations of the Ethernet over twisted pair standards usually no

longer require the use of crossover cables."
