How to TORRENT… ¿Anonymously?

• There are two parts to download torrents anonymously, one, accessing a torrent website (which may be blocked) anonymously and two is the actual torrenting. • The first part can be done relatively

easily. Although torrenting over the tor network is discouraged, tor can still be very useful in accessing torrent websites and downloading the torrent file anonymously.• Another way to access blocked sites

anonymously is to use a proxy. This can be done by using sites such as proxysite.com.

Method -1Having downloaded the torrent file, the actual torrenting starts. There are many ways to make sure you stay anonymous while torrenting.

* The first method is to use a vpn. Virtual Private Networks create an encrypted ‘tunnel’ between your computer and the host server, with the internet traffic going in and out of the host server. Your ISP or government can only see that you have connected to the VPN server and nothing else – your activities, IP addresses you have visited etc. are all completely hidden from them behind a minimum of 128-bit encryption.

CONTD.• However, the VPN server can see what you get up to on-line, which is why it is vital that a good VPN provider to keeps no logs. Anything less, and its users’ activities may be compromised (thus making the precaution of using a VPN in the first place redundant!).• Now there are two types of VPNs, paid and free. The free VPNs

generally do not allow torrenting over their servers, and if you are detected doing just that, it generally results in the termination of your account. The few free VPNs that do allow torrenting generally keep logs, thus making it unsafe.

* Paid VPNs overcome this barriers and a perfect measure to torrent anonymously. Some good VPNs are private internet access, IPVanish etc.

Method -2 • Another method of staying anonymous is by using a proxy. A proxy

(technically an open proxy) server is a computer that acts as an intermediary between your computer and the internet. Any traffic routed through a proxy server will appear to come from its IP address, not your computer’s. Unlike VPN servers, proxy servers do not have to devote resources to encrypting all traffic that passes through them, and therefore can accept simultaneous connections from a great many more users (typically tens of thousands). Proxy servers usually communicate with the internet using one of 2 different protocols; HTTP or SOCKS.

Again there are different types of proxies

• Public Proxies : Because proxy servers can accept so many connections, many public servers have sprung up which allow anyone to use them. Both HTTP and Socks servers are available (with HTTP being more common), lists of which can be found, together with the necessary IP address and Port number from such sites as http://freeproxylists.net/

• Private Proxies : These proxy servers are of course not open to the public, and are usually available for a fee. VPNs, for example, offers both an HTTP and SOCKS5 service, whileBTGuard and TorGuard offer SOCKS5 ‘torrent’ services.

Conclusion:

• Thus, if you don’t mind spending money then VPN is far better and safer an option while torrenting. The main risks associated with VPNs are logging. Also, VPNs are a tad bit slower than proxies. • But, if you want a cost free method, proxies is the way to go. They keep

you anonymous to a fair degree.• Oh and wait, there is one last method that you could use to keep

yourself safe while torrenting! And that is using i2p. The i2p postman tracker and i2p snark service keeps you completely anonymous, and it is next to impossible to catch you torrenting. The only down side of this method is the excruciatingly slow download speeds, which many view as the cost of anonymous torrents. So if you want to be 100% anonymous and don’t want to risk anything, and you don’t mind the slow speed, i2p is the way to go.
