Copying down lecture notes word-for-word is probably the worstway of taking notes. Not only does it require the most amount ofwork, but it'll ensure you won't process the information, becauseyou're basically just copy & pasting.

This tutorial will teach you how to take better, faster notes.

How It's DoneIn order to take good notes, you need to do following:

1. Be Fast2. Take Meaningful Notes3. Have Good Structure

Write FasterThe quickest way to speed up your note-taking is toabbreviate commonly used words. Check out the table on theright for some of the most commonly used abbreviations.

Note: Make sure to keep these abbreviations to personal useonly. They are not appropriate for essays and mostassignments.

A second tip is to use make better use of your other hand.Flip the pages of the textbook with your other hand, erasewith your other hand and drink with your other hand. Thissaves precious time for your good hand to write notes.

A third tip is to use a good pen or pencil. Not all pens and pencils are made the same. Weve all had experienceswith cheap pens that refuse to write half the time (you had to scribble everywhere before the ink finally started torun again), or delicate lead in mechanical pencils that broke mid-way through every sentence. A good pen orpencil can actually speed up your writing time by more than 10%!

Take Meaningful NotesJotting down everything, including stuff you already know is a waste of time. Instead, try to interpret the notes andmake them into your own words. By paraphrasing the notes, you will reduce the total number of words written andyou will dramatically increase your understanding of the material.

There really isn't much to it. Just read the full concept first. Following this one simple rule will force your mind tore-structure the concept in order to understand it. Additionally, this will allow you to quickly decide whether or notyou even need to write it down. Oftentimes, you don't.

Fill with names,titles, headers,etc.

Fill withexplanations,definitions,formulas, etc.

Fill with highlights,important points &questions.
