Is your Mind Organised or Disorganised?

A messy desk shows a messy mind.

An organised desk shows an organised mind.

How to be Organised

Put everything where it should be. Do it straight away – don’t wait until

later or tomorrow. If you wait you waste a lot of time

later, because later you will not remember where things are.

DO THINGS NOW! DON’T WAIT

How must you Learn?

This is where it pays to be organised. Get the work you have done during

the term – homework, tests, class work.

Do some of the questions again without looking at the answers.

Work on your own.

Work with friends.

Page 14: How to Study

How must you Learn?

When you have done some questions then look at the answers.

The questions you got wrong – those are the sections of work you must revise and learn.

I can mark what I know and what I don’t know.

I only need to learn what I don’t know.

Page 15: How to Study

How must you Learn?

Many text books have questions at the end of each chapter.

Do some of these questions. The more questions you practise the

better you get.

Do the questions in your text books.

Page 16: How to Study

How must you Learn?

Things that you got wrong during the term – make sure you can do them now.

Things you did not understand – make sure you understand them now.

Work on your own.

Work with friends and ask each other questions.

Page 17: How to Study

Subjects where there is a lot to remember.

Sit down somewhere where it is quiet, and read what you must learn, aloud.

Write down what you must learn. Even rewrite your class notes, but

giving main points only.

Read aloud to yourself.

Write down what you must learn.

Rewrite your notes giving main points only.

Talking and writing helps you to remember things.

Page 18: How to Study

Subjects where there is a lot to remember.

When you study, underline words in your text book.

When you revise you look at the underlined words and try to remember what they referred to.

Underline the important words in what you are learning.

When you revise you will just have to look at the underlined words to remind yourself of the main sections.

Page 19: How to Study

Subjects where there is a lot to remember.

If you are not allowed to underline words in your text book:

Make two columns on a sheet of paper. Write the important word in the left column. Write a short meaning in the right column. When you revise cover the right column, read

the word in the left column and see what you remember. Word

Page 20: How to Study

Learn Meanings and Definitions.

You must know the meanings of everything you learn.

You must know definitions by heart. Write things down.

Sit and explain everything to yourself.

Write down words and their meanings.

Write out definitions you must know.

Talking and writing helps you to remember things.

Page 21: How to Study

How do you know when you know something?

You know something when you can explain it to others.

Start by explaining it to yourself. Then explain it to someone else.

Explain everything to yourself first.

Then explain it to someone else.

If you can do this, you know it.

Page 22: How to Study

How do you know when you know something?

Stand at a board and explain it to yourself.

Then explain it to someone else.

Explain everything to yourself first.

Then pretend you are the teacher and explain it to the class.

Page 23: How to Study

Do Regular Revision

Once you have learned something, you slowly start forgetting it again.

Refresh your memory by revising the work within a day of having learned it.

Then revise it again a few days later. The more you revise, the better you

remember. Now I know it better.

I learn. I revise. I revise again.

Page 24: How to Study

Do Regular Revision

Why do you make revision notes? So that you can use them to revise.

Now I know it better.

I learn. I revise. I revise again.

A Good Habit to get into

When you come home from school, have a short break.

Then quickly go through the work you did at school.

The work will still be fresh in your mind.

Going through it helps cement what you learned in your brain, and you will remember it better.

Page 26: How to Study

A Warning – Chinese Proverb

He who works regularly finds tests and exams easy. He swims.

He who leaves everything to the last minute – He drowns.

Try to do a little revision every day.

Then, when the exams come you will have very little to do.

Study in Short, Frequent Sessions

Short bursts of concentration are more effective.

Sitting for hours is boring and puts you to sleep.

Study for 30 to 45 minutes, then take a 10 minute break.

After hours of non-stop study.

Page 29: How to Study

Honour you Emotional State

If you are angry, tired, distracted or in a hurry, then …..

Don’t StudyYour brain won’t take anything in.For best results you must be relaxed.

Page 30: How to Study

Review the Same Day

If you learn something new, go over the points the same day.

If you wait a few days they will be much less familiar.

Same day review cements the information into your brain.

Page 31: How to Study

Natural Learning Sequence

First try to grasp or see the big picture.

Then fill in the details. You will have much more success.

Look at what the whole thing does, then look at the smaller parts.

Page 32: How to Study

Study Environment

Set up a study environment that works for you:

Privacy? Special lighting? Silence? Available snacks? Etc.

Page 33: How to Study

Respect “Brain Fade”

The brain starts to forget older things it learned.

Answer: revise regularly Revising usually is quick, because

the information is still reasonably fresh in your brain.

Page 34: How to Study

Create a Study Routine

Study at certain times of the day. You will get into a routine and

accomplish more. If you “just fit in” you will never get

anywhere. Set up a calendar to help you.

Page 35: How to Study

Set Reasonable Goals

Don’t set your goals too high. Set targets you can reach. Set your vision on the long-term

dream. Your day-to-day activities must be

focused on the short-term steps to get you there.

Page 36: How to Study

Avoid Frustration

Don’t feel you have to rush. That gets you worked up and you

don’t achieve. Remember – slow and steady wins

the race.
