Outlines:1.Problem Definition & Types.

2.Problem Solving Steps.

3. Why people fail to solve problems effectively.

4. The skills of problem solving.

5. Finding possible solutions.

Problems can be defined broadly as situations in which we experience uncertainty or difficulty in achieving what we want to achieve.

.Stopping smoking is a problem when you decide you want to stop but cannot

Problems arise when an

obstacle prevents us reaching an

objective.

Objective = something we have decided we need to achieve.Obstacle = anything that prevents us achieving an objective.objective + obstacle = PROBLEM

Problems can be divided broadly into two groups:.Closed problems occur when something has happened that should not have happened, or something we expected to happen has not happened.

.Open-ended problems occur when we want to achieve a specific objective but there are certain obstacles blocking our progress.

.Solving a problem involves finding

ways to overcome any obstacles and to achieve our objective.

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”Marie Curie.

Six-Steps Problem Solving:

1.Recognising the problem :Before any action can be taken to solve a

problem, you need to recognise that a problem

exists.

2.Define the problem:

Defining your objectives, and any obstacles

which could prevent you reaching them.

3.Brainstorm lots of possible solutions:“Who can think of a way to solve this problem?”

The aim of this step is to come up with as many solutions as possible.

4. Evaluate the solution:“would you be satisfied with this solution?”

Each part of the conflict goes through the list of possible solutions, explaining which ones would or wouldn’t be acceptable.

5.Decide on the best solution:

“Do you both agree to this solution?” “is the problem solved?”

Make sure both parts agree and acknowledge their efforts in working out the solution.

6. Check to see how the solution is working.

Why people fail to solve problems effectively:

.not being methodical

.lack of commitment to solving the problem

.misinterpreting the problem

.lack of knowledge of the techniques and processes involved in problem solving

Page 11: How To Solve a Problem ? Presenters: Sameh Tamimi Yazan Qadri Ahmad Al-khatib

.inability to use the techniques effectively

.using a method inappropriate to the particular problem

.insufficient or inaccurate information

.inability to combine analytical and creative thinking

.failure to ensure effective implementation

Remember

.A problem exists when an obstacle prevents you reaching an objective.

.Problem solving can be divided into stages, which you must follow methodically. if you want to be sure of finding an effective solution.

.Solving problems effectively requires a controlled mixture of analytical and creative thinking skills.

The skills of problem solvingProblem solving requires three distinct types of mental skill, analytical and creative.

.mental or logical thinking includes skills such as ordering, comparing, contrasting, evaluating and selecting

.Analytical thinking often predominates in solving closed problems, where the many possible causes have to be identified and analysed to find the real cause.

Page 14: How To Solve a Problem ? Presenters: Sameh Tamimi Yazan Qadri Ahmad Al-khatib

.Creative thinking is a divergent process, using the imagination to create a large range of ideas for solutions. It requires us to look beyond the obvious, creating ideas which may, at first, seem unrealistic or have no logical connection with the problem.

Finding possible solutions:

-Do I really need to achieve this objective?

-Could I substitute a different objective?

-Could I achieve this objective in a different way?

-Would there be any advantage in delaying trying to achieve this objective?

-Is this really an obstacle?

?!

Page 16: How To Solve a Problem ? Presenters: Sameh Tamimi Yazan Qadri Ahmad Al-khatib

-Would someone else be more effective in achieving this objective?

-Would someone else be more effective in dealing with this obstacle?

-Can I deal with the causes of this obstacle? -Can I side-step this obstacle?

-Can I use this obstacle to my advantage??!

AT THE END…

Nobody has no problems in his life. To prevent falling in problems, it is worth to say that :

(“we must put ourselves in the others shoes!! “)

for your safety I advise no one to involve in any problems!!
