How To Sew: Fabric Bins

Recommended Machine: JK - SHIRLEY

These fabric baskets not only provide storage, but they add a decorative touch to any room. Use them for sewing & knitting supplies, kid’s toys, etc. Mix and match them to create a custom look.

You Will Need:

Two 22” wide squares of contrasting fabric One 22” wide square of fusible fleece

All-purpose thread for construction

Threads for decorative stitching (optional)

Sewing Directions: 1. Using the diagram, cut your fabric into a cross shape. Cut your second fabric piece and fusible fleece in the same way.

2. With right sides together and edges aligned, fold your fabric bin lining along one corner seam as shown and sew with a ½” seam allowance.

3. Cut into the seam allowance at the inside corner of the seam, as shown. This helps it turn right side out flat. Press the seam allowance open.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each of the corner seams in the lining until you have all four corners sewn.

5. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the fusible fleece to the wrong side of your outer fabric.

6. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to sew each corner edge for the outer layer.

7. Turn the outer layer right side out and the lining layer inside out. Slip the outer layer inside the lining layer with right sides together and top edges aligned. Sew the top edges together, leaving a 2½” wide opening.

8. Turn the bin right side out through the opening, and press the top edge flat, turning the raw edges of the opening to the inside.

9. Topstitch around the top edge of the bin, about 1/2” from the raw edge, sealing the opening shut. You can also use a decorative stitch to add a personal touch here.

10. Fold over the top edge if desired and press in place. Finish by pressing all edges and folds.
