Overview Of Set UP

CCTV Network Set UpAny camera or device to be used over the internet must first be set up or configured on your local area network (LAN) along with your wide area network (WAN). The local area network setup takes place with the router and the DVR software. There are certain factors that will have to be considered in the configurations of IP cameras and DVRs to the internet before any transmission of data will occur. This will often influence the purchase of a security camera system. Port forwarding will also have to be setup as part of the WAN.

Survey The Work Space

Before purchasing any system it is wise to have an idea of how you will connect your system. For instance with a wired system you would want to know the accessibility of your working area. Respectively the space you have to run the wires in your attic. Where ever you will run the wires maybe in the soffit. Plus the place you will connect them to your router.

Power Outlet

With a wireless you will need a power outlet. Even though the signal is transmitted wirelessly there will still be a need for a power supply. Wireless cameras are only one half wireless unless you use a battery operated camera. In this event you will be constantly changing batteries.

Static Or Dynamic IP

When setting up your new system certain information will be of a benefit to you in understanding the difference between a Static and Dynamic IP address. Most businesses are on a Static while most homes are on a Dynamic IP address. A static IP is constant whereas a Dynamic is constantly changing necessitating a DDNS service normally included with the purchase of a CCTV system or wireless camera. What is my IP will provide you with your IP address plus a lot of other information that may be helpful in setting up a wireless camera or DVR.

Port Forward

You will want to learn about your router as well as port forwarding in order to view your cameras over the internet. At port forward there is a lot of information regarding port forwarding. They have a list of any router that has ever been manufactured to help in the set up or configuration of your network. How To Setup

IP Camera Set UpThese instructions for how to setup IP camera and will be similar for most wireless IP cameras. There may be a few variations with the router or with the camera manufacturers that are involved. But overall it will be the same.By following these directions you will learn how to setup IP camera. The first thing to do is to take all items out of the box and separate them. Place them so you can easily identify each part. Make sure you have the following items, the camera itself, a bracket to mount the camera, a network cable and software to install on the computer you want to monitor your camera.

Local Area Network (LAN)Then you will want to plug the power cord into the camera, with the other end into an electrical outlet. Then connect one end of the network cable (Ethernet Cable) into the back of the camera and the other end into one of the ports on router. At this point we are ready to set the camera up on our Local Area Network (LAN).

Next log into your router by typing your IP address into the browser. If you do not know your IP address visit What is my

IP Address they will immediately identify your IP address. Once typed in, a pop up window will ask for your user ID and password to log into your router.

This info was established on the initial installation of the router and you should be aware of it.

DHCP Client

Next check the DHCP client table to find out what internal IP address the camera has been assigned. Once found, click on the network name and many of the fields will be populated for the camera setup. They may ask for a WEP Key. To find the WEP Key go back to the router in the wireless section, then click the wireless security tab. Now copy the WEP Key and go back to the camera setup. Here you will place it in the box asking for the WEP Key. The WEP Key is used to connect the cameras to the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Once you click save, it will generate a new IP address to access the wireless cameras. This is the address to access the internal wireless local area network IP address of the camera. Now paste it into a new tab in your browser. Then hit enter and it should take you to the camera that is being set up. Now log into the software of the camera and click on the wireless tab. A new window should appear showing the Wireless Local Area Network that has just been created.

Setting Up Port ForwardingTo finish the set up it is necessary to log back into the cameras software by typing in our new wireless local area network IP address. Once there look for HTTP Port usually you will see Port 80 assigned to this location it is best to change this to a different number to one that you are sure is not being used perhaps 88, 89 or 90.

Now go back and log into your router. Then find the applications and gaming section. Open the port forwarding section and find a blank line, in the application space type in wireless IP Camera then the port number twice, which is 89. Then fill in the IP address for the wireless local area network. When we log into our camera from a remote location port 89 will forward our request to log into the wireless local area network.

How to Connect DVR To Internet Port Forwarding

To setup a CCTV DVR LAN Connection, one or more cameras must be connected to the DVR. The first thing to do is to connect an Ethernet cable from the DVR to the router. The ethernet cable has a telephone connection on both ends and provides the signal from the DVR to the router. Now go into the menu of the DVR it will be located on the face of the DVR. Select the network setup tab.

Setting Up The Internal IP Address

In the menu take note of the IPADDR this is the IP address the DVR is currently receiving from the router. Now notice the IP Mode, currently the IP Mode is static, we are going to change it to DHCP. This is done to allow the router to assign the DVR an IP Address. Once the DHCP mode is selected hit the menu button and it will automatically update the IP Address. Once finished hit the menu button again and select setup this will take us to the network setup menu. Here you will see the IP Address has changed to a new IP address. This is our new internal IP address for our LAN, Local Area Network. Write this number down we will need it for the CCTV DVR set up. Go back to the IP mode and change from DHCP to Static IP address to prevent the IP address from changing. Next in the same menu select HTTP Port. It should read Port 80.

We want to change this to another designated Port. Often Port 80 is the default for other devices and may interfere with our port. We want to assign our system its own designated port of 88 or it could be 89, 90 or even 91-99. Once this has been done hit the menu button twice and it will load with all of our settings and take us out of the setup. Just as long as it is different. For now this completes the router setup portion of the DVR.

Computer Setup Of DVR

To verify our internal IP address type it into the browser and make sure you type in 88 at the end. Once this is done hit enter and the setup for the DVR will appear. Now we need to make some router setting changes so we log into our router settings.

Configure DVR For Internet

Page 10: How to Setup DVR and Setup IP Camera

This will take us to the router setup so we can open a port on the router. If you are having problems you can visit www.portforward.com and they have information on every possible router. Next click on virtual servers from the menu. This will redirect common network services to a specific device behind the firewall. Our device is our DVR. Fill in the local IP address with the same internal IP Address. The port range is our port number which is 88 to 88. The description is our DVR, just name it DVR number 1 2 or what ever may be applicable. You may have a modem that may assign the router an internal IP address, in this instance it would be called bridging. The WAN (Wide Area Network) is the same as the world wide web or the internet.

Testing The Port Forwarding

When finished test the system by placing the external IP address in the browser. The external IP address can be found by going to www.whatismyip.com it will be displayed upon arriving at the sight. Now type this into a new browser and include the http:// and at the end of the IP Address place a colon along with the new port number which in this case was 88. Then hit enter it will then ask for authentication. The default user name is admin and the password is also admin. This will get you into the setup. Once there the password and user ID can be changed.

Differences From Wireless IP and DVR

The difference between a Wireless IP camera connection to the internet and connecting a DVR to the internet is that the signal from the wireless Camera to the router is wireless, whereas an ethernet cable is required to connect directly from the DVR to the router. The IP camera will come with software as well as the DVR reflecting the features of each device. Businesses usually have a Static IP address whereas residences have Dynamic IP addresses. A static IP address can be requested from your service provider. A Static IP address is the same at all times. Just log into your local network with this address and access your internal WLAN. Due to Dynamic addresses changing it is easiest to subscribe to a free service tracking the Dynamic IP Address changes providing a direct login to your WLAN and devices.
