step 1 ASK FOR A NAME pick up phone

dial number

take a breathe

Hi, who do I speak to about hanging art?

If Name is not there or busy don't leave a message. Instead get a DAY and TIME tocall them back...by saying:

When is a good time to catch them?

step 2 ASK NAMEHOW TO APPLY

Is Name available?Don't ask is Name there? Cuz who cares if they are there, you want their sweet time.

Hi Name, I'm Eli.I want to apply for an art show.

Can I bring you a CD with

photos of my paintings?

pencil in the name on your WHO TO CALL list and ask how to spell it..if you do get a hold of Name on this phone call then ask them how to spell their name after you guys decide when you are going to drop off a CD

You'll want to just straight up ask to bring a CD in before they trysuggesting slides (boo), prints, actual art, or to email them photos. CDshave worked best for me cuz I can cram a lot onto it and it makes themfeel important to recieve a package. They'll remember you and noticethat you are dead serious. They will also think you think the place theyown or work at is real special.

If they say no to a CD because they don't have a puter ask if you can bring your laptop in to show them. If you don't have a laptop then you'llhave to do it their way...maybe prints? You can make prints into a little

booklet and get it back so you don't have to waste printer ink or kinkosmoney on making more than 1.

optional: I can come now?...

step 4 MAKE A CD AND A COVER LETTER

YOU WILL NEED: • a blank CD•

CD sleeve• a letter of introduction (it's easy!)

HOW TO MAKE Don't neccessarily make just one CD and copy it unless your work all goes well together atthat time. Try to put specific photos on the CD that would look best at that particular place.

June 2006,

To Donna Northouse,

Hello. My name is Eli and I want to apply for an exhibition of my paintings at Clayton Fine Books.Along with this letter of introduction I have enclosed a CD with examples of my work. Please consider mywork for any solo or group show. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Eli Halpin

copy this:

I make one , save the file, and use it forever. With this template you can erase and rewrite

info like their name, name of business, addresses, and dates. You can use wierd fonts andcolors and print out on pretty paper.

FOLD INTO A SQUARE TO STICK INTO SLEEVE WITH CD

HOW TO MAKE AFold a paper in half then cut down to a square just big enough to put the CD in then writeor print right onto one side.

F o r N a m e N a m e o f B u s i n e s s

F r o m Y o u V i s u a l A r t A p p l i c a n t

I print mine right onto the sleeve. Use pretty paper like construction or oragami. I like toscan fabric into the computer and then print it out on to cardstock to make it real fancy. Thenfold in half and cut into a square, insert CD and letter. Seal remaining 3 open sides with a neatstaple or tape job or sew it shut.

Again, I have a template ready in the computer and I use font colors like red and purple. Then I can just change the name of the contact person and the business name evertime. Now

you have a fancy noticeable package for that someone special.

DELIVER IT

step 5 ASK FOR A YES OR NOWait at least 3 days then call to ask for a YES or no. Calling back the same day of week and time you did thefirst time might be your best bet.

Is Name available?

Hi Name, this is Kate Halpin. I dropped off an application for an artshow blank days ago. Did you look at it yet?

Pause and let them do the rest of the talking. If they havn't looked at it yet get a day and time to call back.

They will say one of 3 things:

• NOT YET -

When should I call back? then repeat previous paragraph

• NO your work isn't appropriate here.

move on

• YES they'll do fine, I love em.

Thank you! What day and what time should I come to hangthem?

Also make sure you ask

* What % if any do they take?

Do you take a percentage if I sell a painting?

* Can I put nails in the wall or is it a wire show? Will I need a drill?

What are the walls like?

* Do I hang it alone or are you going to be there or do I just drop them off (rare)?

I can hang the show alone no problem, or were you planning on being there?

If so act pleased even though it is annoying. They might be a control freak and need to tell you where to putwhat. If it sounds like there is a chance they might trust you to do it alone grab it and assure them you'll betotally fine.

Oh yeah..also confirm how the customers will pay for paintings. Will they contact you directly or pay theemployees and leave cash/checks for you there? Or both? This can be wierd cuz someone might walk inand leave money for a peice and no one has time or remembers to call you - meanwhile someone might callyou to buy a piece and you say yes not knowing it is already sold. You'll just have to go with it and keep asmile on. Most place won't deal with that and refuse to take $ and just make people call you directly. That'snice but on the other hand a buyer might not feel like calling you AND sometimes places let them use their

credit card machine to facilitate the impulse. If this happens don't be a bitch if the place takes a little bit of $ tocover the cost of the CC machine. Just say thank you. SO: If your situation is loose like this then if you do sella painting you need to either call the place and tell em to put a sold scribble on the tag or scoot over there and doit yerself if they seem like the don't bug me type. AND! You should try to meet a buyer ASAP to get the

painting to them before they change their mind or an expensive emergency comes up like their cat has needs avet or they crack a tooth. AND! Have a stash handy so you can bring a replacement painting. You'll need to be

clear with the place upfront that you will be replacing sold paintings with new ones right away and encouragethem to hand the painting over if they are selling them for you so you can bring a new one in. That way youincrease your chances for $ and you don't have a sold painting hanging around risking damage and theft. ALSO!If someone calls to buy a peice that is sold tell em you have one started that is similar and they can buy that one -and you know what to do.

allow 2-3 hours to hang the showuntil you get the hang of things
