SUN?

Wow, summer feels like it came early this year! We've had several days with temperatures soaring into the low 90's, and it's just the beginning! After being stuck inside for so long this winter, it's nice to get a break and head outside with your child. The warm breeze and sunshine on your skin is a welcome change, and it feels so nice you don't even notice the effects on your child's skin until it's too late! How can you protect your child's delicate skin without keeping them inside all summer long?

Sun safety can be tricky, it only take about 15 minutes for exposed skin to experience damage from the sun's harmful rays! But with a little knowledge, a lot of attention, and a few extra steps for sun safety, you and your child can spend your time having fun in the sun, worry-free!

When it comes to sun safety, planning is your best friend! There are so many times and situations in which you don't even realize your child will be out in the sun until it's already happening...and then you inevitably forgot to pack the sunscreen! It only takes 15 minutes for your child's skin to be damaged, but it can take up to 12 hours for the damage to truly show. Once the full effect sets in, that pink sun-damaged skin hurts! Even tanned skin, though it's considered the fashionable color to be, is dangerous! Tanned skin is just sun-damaged skin; not burned, but slow-roasted.

When you consider that it only take a few serious sunburns to increase your child's risk of skin cancer later on in life, that's enough to remind you to make some necessary changes and start planning for sun safety for your child. To know more about child safety from sun you can consult to your child care center.

The good news is that the effects of the sun are completely avoidable! The UV rays from the sun are strongest in the afternoon, so planning your outings in the morning or late afternoon/early evening will ensure that your child can be in the cool indoors while the sun is shining it's brightest. That's great in an ideal world, but sometimes it's inevitable that your child will be outside during those afternoon hours. Finding shade under a tree, umbrella, or pop up tent can help your little one stay cool and free from sun exposure, while still enjoying the outdoors.

Daycare centers always inform the parents about child safety. If staying undercover isn't an option, you can ensure sun safety by dressing your child appropriately. We all know how hot it gets outside, but by wearing longer shorts, a shirt with sleeves, or a beach cover up helps cover that delicate skin, while still keeping them cool.

Add a hat and sunglasses to protect your child's eyes, face, scalp, ears and neck is always a wise choice. Remember, baseball caps leave those little ears exposed, so while they may be the most popular choice, they're not the most protective.

In addition to all of these things, sunscreen is a must! Sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 that blocks UVA and UVB rays provide the best protection from the harm that the sun can bring. For the best protection for sun safety for your child:  apply, apply, and apply some more!

Ideally your child should have sunscreen applied 30 minutes before leaving the house, and then applied periodically throughout the day, immediately after swimming or sweating! Babies less than 6 months old are best kept out of the sun completely! Once babies are in the sun, be sure to apply the right sunscreen for their skin.
