I – INTRODUCTION

A.) The Priority of Proper Prayer

1.) Although Jesus spent only 3 years in his earthly ministry he often devoted himself to prayer.

(Mark 1:35, 6:45-46, 14:32-34, Luke 4:42, Luke 5:16, Luke 6:12)

2.) Jesus himself repeatedly commands that we are to pray

(Luke 18:1, Mathew 26:41)

. . . The Priority of proper prayer

3.) The New Testament often exhorts us to pray

(Ephesians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, James 5:13, 1 Timothy 2:2, James 1:5, Philippians 4:6, 7)

4.) The Priority of the New Testament Church was prayer

(Acts 2:42, Acts 6:4)

B.) The Purpose of Prayer - GOD

- The purpose of prayer is GOD (vs. 10)

– Prayer is not trying to get God to agree with us.

-From the beginning to the end of the Lord’s pattern of prayer the focus is on God’s sovereignty, righteousness and majesty

-Prayer is seeking to conform our desires and our purposes to his will and glory.

C.) The Pattern of Proper Prayer

Mathew 6:9 to 13 is familiarly known as “The Lord’s prayer” or the “Disciples prayer.” The prayer Jesus gives is a pattern and not intended to be repeated for the following reasons:

1.) Jesus explicitly said that it is a pattern and not meant to be repeated as a prayer itself - The introduction to the verse says – “After this manner therefore pray ye” (Cebuano translation “Busa pag-ampo kamo sa ingon niini nga paagi”

. . . The pattern of proper prayer

2.) Jesus warned us not to pray using vain repetitions in verse number 7.

3.) Nowhere in the New Testament do we find this prayer or any other prayer being used repititiously

The Disciples prayer is therefore meant to be a guide, road map, pattern or protocol if you may on how we are to pray.
