Step 3

Marking the canvas up and applying the elements. Referring to the compositional image draw up the Planets. Use a cord compass to ensure the planet is round. Then lay in the other planets with a paint lid and drinking glass. Cut out all of the elements in sheets 6,7 and 8. Lay the canvas flat and place them into position. When you are happy with the position glue them in place with some acrylic gloss medium. Let this dry and give it a thin second coat with the gloss medium.

Step 1

Tinting the canvas. Squeeze out some Acrylic Silver Series Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Yellow Orange and Burnt Sienna all in equal proportions. Dampen the surface of the canvas with water and lay a band of the mix across the top of the canvas. Using horizontal strokes blend the colour out by adding water to the mix as you move down the canvas. Create a transition so that there is very little pigment on the canvas by the time you get to the bottom of the canvas. Let this dry. Turn the canvas over and referring to the composition lay out, draw in the skyline with a white pastel pencil.

Step 2

Cutting in the sky. Squeeze out some Acrylic Silver Series Cerulean Blue and Titanium White. Using a 75 mm wide artists Taklon Brush lay Cerulean Blue into the top of the canvas using long horizontal strokes and move down the canvas adding more water to the mix as you work down in the same way as was done for the tint. When you are about 150 mm from the skyline, flip the canvas. Add some white to the Cerulean mix so the ratio is 1 part Cerulean to 5 parts White and cut in up to the skyline. Blend this into the Cerulean background. If the coat is drying in a little quickly, give it a mist with a water spray bottle.

Step 3 continued

If you do not have a tilting studio easel you can place you canvas on the floor and apply them like that.

In the video I use a hobby knife tocut out the elements but scissors

could be used also. If you arenot yet an adult we advise againstthe use of a hobby knife. Whenapplying the cut out elements

ensure that only a small amount ofmedium is used or the paper can

wrinkle and tunnel.

Step 4 Oil paint background. Squeeze out some Phthalo Blue and mix it with linseed medium to 1 part medium to 6 parts paint . Start at the top of the canvas and as you work down the canvas mix in medium to lighten the paint. By the time you reach the sky line there paint should only be a hint of Pthalo in the mix.

When blending, lay the coloursdown and with a soft clean brush run back and forth over the twocolours and bring them gently

together. When glazing, use a flat taklon. You will get better resultswith a taklon or sable, as it won’t

leave brush strokes.

Step 6 Glazing the elements. Paint the spaceships with Silver, use the paint directly from the tube as the Silver is already translucent. The other colours will have to be glazed. To glaze, the paint must be mixed in the ratio of 1 part paint to 3 parts linseed medium. If you can’t see the underlying image then add more medium so the paint becomes more translucent. Paint the Pyramids in with Yellow ochre on the light side and add a touch of Sienna to the mix and then paint in the dark side. Paint the alien in with Turquoise.

Step 5Painting the planets. It is suggested to watch the video for this stage. Start with the small planets and paint up to the arc in Pthalo Blue. Ensure the colour is the same as the surrounding planet. Blend it up to the arc and then blend the edge into the background. Dry brush the highlight side with Zinc White and blend it into the blue side. Follow the same process for the other small planet. Follow the steps the same way for the Blue in the large planet but refer to the compositional layout to get the unification line correct. Dry brush Zinc White into the highlight area and blend it into the Blue part of the planet and then lightly blend in some crimson into the middle area. Once the main part of the planet is done paint the ring in with a Mauve made from Pthalo, White and Crimson mixed in equal proportions.

Step 7 Detailing. In this final step lay in the detail that you lost when cutting out the spacecrafts. Use Black for this and mix it with medium to the viscosity of cream. Use a fine brush. Lay in the flowers with Red Crimson and then add the Green stalks. Create the laser beam by masking either side with tape. Paint this with Titanium white and blend a little blue into the centre. Paint a thin line behind the small craft with Zinc White thinned to thee consistency of thin cream. Use a fine brush and a ruler to get the line very straight.
