Step 1

Creating the background - On to the canvas lay beads of paint emitting from a central point. The colours I have used are Lemon Yellow, Vermillion, Light Green, Scarlet, Ultra Marine Blue and Viridian, but really the colours you use are up to you and I think in some small part the colours used may be dictated by your pets personality. If you want to achieve the look of my background you lay the paint directly onto the canvas in lines omitting from a central point. Once the paint is applied take a # 15 palette knife and evenly disperse the paint over the canvas and roughly blend the colours to create an interesting look and texture. Let this dry.

Step 2

Glazing on the glitter paint - Glitter paint is made up with the glitter suspended in a translucent tinted base, this makes it perfect for glazing. To apply this I use the # 15 palette knife and apply the coat fairly thickly. Try to make the coat as smooth as possible. Let this dry.

Step 5

Painting the pet - This step will be dependent on the animal you are painting but the key is to simplify the colours. On my dog Daisy, apart from some Orange on the eyes and collar, she is only 2 colours has be broken in to 2 colours, in this case Violet and Chinese White. I lay in the dark pure Violate in first and then the White. While the White is still wet I dry brush some colour onto the side in shadow. The last step is adding the highlights into the nose and those glimmers eyes. The highlights on the nose are approximately blended in and the white highlights on the eyes are pure white.

Step 3

Drawing on the pet - In this step I draw a simplified version of the dog. I draw this in directly with a T-Shirt marker and draw in the outline and any colour demarcations. Alternatively you could lay over a sheet of tracing paper and outline these elements, you can then create a grid over this and then transfer it onto your canvas like that.
