The potential for security vulnerabilities now that we have passed April 8 is huge

There is concern that some hackers have found current vulnerabilities and are going to utilize them now with EOS

There will be very real compliance, audit, and legal issues for the use of, and breaches resulting from, Windows XP after EOS

Windows XP systems cannot be modified to be secure despite misguided press reports of that being possible

Windows XP End of Support (EOS) was April 8, 2014

With the threat upon us and a compressed timeframe, there are many demands being made on the migration process

– IT does not have the bandwidth to touch every device

– Has to be designed to allow users to make the migration without detailed technical knowledge

– Must be completed relatively quickly

– Ensure that migration provides the same privileges and access

– Meet the demand “same as I had before, but better!”

Threats from Windows XP Make Migration Mandatory

Identify and collect key user specific files and elements

Multiple options for what aspects to include

– Files

– Favorites

– Desktop user settings

– Standard/non-standard applications

– Outlook profile

IT can set standards for what is part of the backup

Step 1: Backup Existing Data

The state of the software and operating system on many older machines is often not very stable and may contain incomplete patching or other problems, starting with a fresh OS image prevents future problems

A fresh OS image also provides greater consistency

There is no direct upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7

This step speeds up the migration and results in successful migrations

Step 2: Wipe the Hard Drive

This is the starting point when the OS image is loaded onto the system

This step can be accomplished using Microsoft’s WIM format

There is an option to make this a system specific image with the drivers for that system, or a more generic Windows 7 image with drivers to be loaded later

Lenovo Imaging Services can add specific applications, permissions, and other elements to the Windows 7 image based on the specific user

Step 3: Install the Windows 7 Image

The starting point for loading applications and services

This stage is where specific scripting for individual users or work groups is started

Any customization to the software image is started here

Step 4: Execute Script Deployment Steps

This step focuses on loading the organization’s applications and installing key elements of organizational tools and is where new applications that may not have been used with the Windows XP image are loaded

Specific organizational or business unit applications are loaded

Other functions commonly deployed include:

– Set up network printers

– Create user accounts

– Install access connections profiles

Step 5: Install Apps/Join Domain/Insert Active Directory

In many common scenarios, there is a need to ensure that local language support is implemented during the migration process

This includes time zone, currency, keyboard, and other system elements

In-Place Migration provides a consistent localized image which has many benefits

Any needed local settings for that system are installed at this step

Fundamentally reloads all of the information gathered in Step 1

Includes all of the user settings or “personality” elements that are needed to provide consistency with the Windows XP version of the system

IPM provides an experience that “looks the same as it did before, but works far better”

Step 7: Restore User Data

IPM can reduce the cost of migration 30-40%

Gartner estimates that the cost of migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 is $1,035 to $1,930

There is also an opportunity cost that is gained by migrating more quickly

– Reducing CSA expense

– Less user interruption/downtime

Lenovo recommends Windows 8.

Reducing the complexity of tech support calls due to image standardization via In-Place Migration

Less complexity for end users with fewer differences in daily operation among systems

Consistent image deployment across multiple geographies and technicians allows for improved accuracy and quality of migration

The Benefits of Consistent User Images

Both security and management tools can be deployed via IPM to ensure that they are installed on the system that will be migrated

No reliance on user participation for loading security or management tools

Consistent use of specific security or management tools, rather than using multiple vendors resulting from individual user choices

Documentation that systems that are upgraded via IPM meet compliance and legal demands for security and up to date software

Consistent Deployment of Security/Management Tools
