Quick Introduction

How to Measure for Curtains & BlindsIt is extremely important that you get your measurement right when buying curtains and blinds. As if you do not measure correctly you will end up with the wrong size, meaning if they are made to measure, we would not be able to take them back into stock. We have put a quick guide together on how to measure for curtains and blinds, but we suggest if you are still unsure, please watch some of the video on youtubefor further details on how to measure for curtains. As the measuring is to be completed by yourselves or a professional we cannot take responsibility for incorrect measurements. The following information is to be used as a guide as personal preference will make each window measurements slightly different.

Before you Start MeasuringYou will require:Metal tape measure - as this will allow you to get a rigid full length measurement.Piece of paper - for recording your measurement.Pen - for recording the measurementHelper - someone to assist if your windows are large as it is sometimes easier with a second pair of hand

Step 1 - Ensuring you curtain pole or track is fitted correctly.

The first step is to decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or pole, both of which should be positioned 15cm (6 inches) above the window and extend 15-20cm (6-8 inches) either side.

5

Step 2 - Measuring the curtain pole or track width

You want to measure the total width of the track or pole, excluding the finials as these will not be covered. Then add a small amount on to allow for an overlap of your curtains.

Step 3 - Measuring the drop for the curtains

When you are ready to measure, you have to make a decision about where you want the curtains to finish. The choices are whether to go to the sill, below the sill or to the floor. We suggest that:

Sill length curtains finish 1.25cm (1/2 inch) above the sill.

Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm (6 inches) below.

Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm (1/2 inch) from the floor (although you can create a shappysheak look by having them puddled on the floor, but that is personal preference).

Step 4 - Double / Triple Check your measurements

It is essential that you re check all your measurements. As once fabric is cut you cannot exchange it. So makesure you order the correct curtains whether they are made to measure curtains or ready made curtains

1. Tie off the strings at the outside edge of each curtain to avoid the strings being pulled all the way through when you start to gather your curtains then tuck them into the back of the heading tape.

2. Take all 3 strings (or 6) on the inside edge of your curtain and start to pull the string through, at the same time pushing the curtain fabric back along the string to form folds. It should gently slip along the string.

3. Once you have pulled the strings through sufficiently measure your curtain to make sure it is half the width of your window plus 2cm (or so) to allow a slight overlap.

4. If you are happy with the width securely tie off the inside edge of your curtain. It is best to tie this in a slipknot for times when you may need to loosen the folds (eg. when dry cleaning your curtains).

5. Lay the curtain out in front of you with the tape facing towards you. Spread out the folds as evenly as possible for the width you have allowed.

6. Once you have chosen the position on your tape where you want your hooks to sit place a curtain hook at either outside edge of your curtain and proceed to place further hooks at intervals of every four pockets or so.

7. Repeat the process with your other curtain.8. You are now ready to hang your curtains!9. Once you have hung your curtains you can rearrange the heading tape at the top in

order for your curtains to sit as neatly as possible in a concertina form. This can be achieved by gently pushing the folds of fabric back in between the curtain hooks.

Hanging Pinch Pleat Curtains

The pinch pleat hooks are sharp and small so you will need to be careful when handling them.

Prepare you curtains by laying them out on a flat surface that is clean as to not damage your curtains. Make sure you lay them with back of the pinch pleat tape facing you.

Find one of the pleats and insert the sharp end of the hook into the fabric, making sure that the sharp end is deep into the Pleat of the fabric.

The hook should be inserted into the fabric as close to the top of the curtains as possible. This will mean that the curtains will hang below your curtain track or pole.

It is a good option now to measure from where the hook is located and then check that the length is suitable for where you wouldlike the curtains to hang to. There is the ability to move the hook and the pole to fit the length you have made of your curtains

Make sure that you do not hang the curtain to hide the pole or track as this will make them not hang correctly.

The curtains will adjust after a few days as the weight goes through the hooks. This is the curtains setting into place. So it is advisable to put the hooks in slightly lower in the fabric to allow for this.

Once you have the correct position of your hook, move along each pleat and measure the same distance to ensure all of the hooks are in the pleats in the same position.

Make sure you do not miss any of the pleats on the curtains and have sufficient ring or sockets on the curtains to support them.

Once the curtains are hanging, draw them back fully and then, from the top of the curtain, push the fabric back, in between the pinch pleats. Run your hand down the length of the curtain and press the pleats.

For a superior finish we recommend, tieing three strips of lining or fabric around each curtain. They should hold the fabric in position but they should not be so tight that they leave indentation marks

Trade Secret – Dressing Curtains

1. Get 3 pieces of string.2. Open your curtains fully.3. Start at the outside edge at the top and pull through the

natural pleat created by the heading tape. Pull the crease to the front of the curtain and run your fingers down the length of the fabric, thus removing any slight creases. This is setting in the

4. Move to the next pleat and do the same, whilst holding the complete one in your hand in order to keep it straight.

5. Once all pleats are done. Tie a piece of string at the top / middle / bottom of the curtain to hold the pleat and new creases.

6. Leave for as long as possible to let the creases and pleats set in. Preferably with some heat as the fabric will adjust quicker.
