How to make a Dresden Plate: Step 1: Cut out template, and the trace dresden blades onto fabric and carefully cut out. You will cut 20 blades from various fabrics per dresden. Fold dresden blade in half right sides together. Sew a 1/4” seam along the top edge. *If you are using a Dresden Ruler - you will cut your strips to 5” and use the 5” marking on your ruler, to cut your blades.

Step 2: Turn right side out and press. Make 20 blades.

Step 3: Place two blades right sides together, aligning the top edges (it’s okay if the bottom edges aren’t aligned perfectly. Sew a 1/4” seam along the edge. Press. When pressing, do not use steam, it might stretch your blades, and you will have a problem with your plate laying flat.

Step 4: Sew blades together, until you have sewn all 20 blades. If your dresden plate is not laying flat with 20 blades, you can add or take away a blade and see if that helps. Or use some starch when pressing. You can also sew the blades together in sets of 5, and then sew the sets together. Some people prefer to do it this way. Make 9 Dresden Plates.

Step 5: Take your 15” background square and now you are going to add corner square triangles to each of the corners. Place your 4” green square right sides together with your background piece. Mark a diagonal line from corner to corner and sew on that line. Then trim 1/4” from your seam allowance, and press.

Step 6: Place your dresden plate on top of your 15” square background piece. Find the center of the back-ground square, and place your dresden exactly in the center. Pin into place! It helps to pin a lot so it doesn’t shift when you sew it on!

Step 7: Once pinned into place, carefully stitch your dresden onto your background fabric. Staying very close to the edge---about 1/8” or less.

Step 8: Now using your circle template (on last page) you will use that to make the center of your dresden. Iron some fusible web onto the fabric, then trace the circle on and then cut out. Place circle in the center of the dresden plate and iron into place. Stitch along the edge of the circle to secure into place.

Step 9: Sashing and Borders.

Sew blocks into group of threes, with a sashing piece (2.5” x 15”) between the blocks.

Step 10: Piece your sashing together, starting with a 2.5” square and then a 15” strip. Each row will have 4 squares, and 3 strips. Make 6.

Step 11: Sew a sashing strip in between each row and also on the top and bottom. Pressing after each row.

Step 12: Sew the left and right sashing strip onto the left and right side.

Step 13: Baste, quilt and bind with your preferred method.
